Wearing a watch with a wetsuit?

I'm doing the "garmin in the swim cap" trick that Dcrainmaker has on his site.

I can hit the buttons through the cap, and in multi sport mode makes it easy to record S/B/R as well as T1 and T2 times.

You have to put the watch on out of the water, but if you use a quick release kit then it should be quick.

Wow! Its almost July and we are still discussing wetsuits!!  I guess I am spoiled living in the hot & humid southern U.S.!  My wetsuit was packed away in May!

I use a Garmin 310XT so it is pretty big.  I put on the wetsuit then fold back the sleeve and put the Garmin on and then fold the sleeve back over the watch.  If I leave it out (low down on my wrist) my suit gets caught on it.  I can start it through the suit or about two seconds before and pull the sleeve over.  I do get a little more water in that sleeve but nothing that seems to make much difference.

I do the same with my timing chip.  Goes under the suit on my ankle so it doesn't get caught when removing the suit.

if the sleeve won't interfere with the operation/buttons, under the westuit.

If you need access to buttons wear it over.  I have a Timex Global and wear it over the sleeve.  On the run out of the water I take it off the sleeve, rip off the suit and replace on my naked, powerful wrist.  Easy.

I wear a Timex Ironman watch under the wetsuit with the sleeve folded over 1" or so so I can see it in the water. 

Tip for getting it on/off easily...body glide the band!  Never had a problem getting the suit off.

For training I have put in over the sleeve of the wet suit.  I used it to time my swim intervals and rest intervals so it had to be where I could see it when I was stopped. 

In races I don't make any scheduled stops and trying to get it off before the wet suit peal is problematic.  If you forget you have it on and start the peal then it gets rolled under the wet suit so you have to so a reverse peal take the watch off and peel again.  if you do get it off where do you put it during the peal?  I tried putting the wrist strap between my teeth once and it fell out so I had to gave back for it.

Since I don't look at the watch during the swim I have been careful in putting in on under the sleeve of the wet suit.  I don't start of stop the watch when it is under the wet suit for a race.  I just wait until I am on the bike to start it as I pull out of transition. 

I also have just left the watch on the bike so I didn't have to worry about it during the swim and what not and then just start it when I get on the bike.

I did a time trial this month.  Like a race I had not plans to stop so I didn't need to see it during the swim.  I however was doing an OWS and wanted to know what the swim distance and time were I was advised to put the GPS watch under the swim cap.  That keeps it out of the water so it can transmit during a swim.  With it under the swim cap i could hit all the big start/stop type button through the cap.
