Subject: RE: Navy Laser shoots down droneNice... Island of Dr. Moreau meets Dr. Evil. now about the real system: The Navy Phalanx system started as a beast of a Gatling-gun to shoot down anti-ship missiles, but they have bullets, not lasers = Range and Speed fail. Now they can do close-defense fast and clean on pesky UAVs (yes other people that mean to do bad things to us have them). The Army/Israel already have something like this for ground defense, MTHEL. When comparing cost per/shot, Lasers are way cheaper, have better aiming, and longer range. Also, don't expect to have laser handguns or a fleet of new F-35 planes with laser weapons on them. Lasers need lots of power to fire and the big ones have cooling issues, so big ship/vehicle needed for the electricity and active cooling system required. until we get Tony Stark's garage lab fixed up that is... then it's on like donkey-kong with the iBlaster from Apple. |
