NY city is asking permission to ban the purchase of soda with food stamps.

What say you CoJ?

Does the government have the right to limit what one can/or cannot purchase?  Or will this have a positive impact on health?

I think the program needs to be more like WIC, with dietary guidelines and education built in, if they think it is going to improve/promote health.

Just ban soda, they still can buy fruit drink, candy and cookies, garbage cereals, and get out of the store with a cart load of garbage anyway.

Meh.

You're not gonna fix people's problems by telling them what to do.  They'll find some alternative that's likely just as bad.  Not big on legislating things like this.

ETA - Didn't mean "meh" to address the poster meh.  Just a general meh to the idea.

I think that if the government is giving you the money to buy food then they can tell you how you spend it.

But, limiting soda isn't going to fix anything.

I always though they had a list of things you could purchase.  Or maybe that was Canada.  Or Oregon.  But I remember being in a store and being behind someone that was not allowed to get something with food stamps because it was no on the list of allowed foods.  I'm ok with that.  Don't ban anything but rather say these are the things you can get.  Eggs, milk, bread, oatmeal, etc.  Otherwise, if you wanted to cut out all unhealthy foods it would be never ending.

I don't have a problem with it since it is not the recipient's money to begin with.  The purpose (reducing obesity and improving nutritional health) sounds pretty legit.    Like an above poster noted, I think a WIC approach would be good.  Might even reduce the cost of publically funded obesity-related healthcare.

I agree, the WIC program has a better vision.

As an aside, I would say that when I was a grocery store cashier way back in the early 90s, it was very slow and tedious to check out folks with WIC vouchers.   I wish there was a way to make the whole process simpler...    I would like to see something more like a food warehouse with only approved items.  There could be even more control that way.

You accept the money, you accept the restrictions on it. There is no right to spend other people's money as you see fit.

Maybe WIC debit cards of sorts?  But, that would be risky of them getting ripped off.

I guess as long as it is "... designed to be eaten or prepared out of the store," they can literally eat all of the cake they want with food stamps.

No. Leave it a pain in the butt. If you start with the warehouse idea then you need a shipping infrastructure, personnel to run the place and you've just introduced another pond for someone to use as their on personal fiefdom.

I"m thinking like Vegas..  once you can walk away with the money without getting tassered it's your money. More money is lost to the illusion of "it's the house's money"

Soooooo   Once that money hits the persons hands it's their money..  and my opinion that it should only be spent on "healthy" items has as much bearing on them as it does for my opinion on how anyone else should spend thier money.

I should have specified that the slow part was checking the food against the WIC voucher.  Eeach person had a specific list of things to get and varied from person to person.  Not the approved items, but which/how many each person received.  I assumed it was income/#of children based, so one person would get 3 times as many of the same sorts of items.

At least with food stamps, you can buy as much as you can afford and the budget balancing is left to the consumer.  A good person would use coupons and things, others would buy inappropriately in my opinion.  Choosing name brands over generic, etc.    Actually that's another area that could use some work, which would support my food warehouse idea.  Okay, in  no way practical.  But ideal!

Have a specific check-out counter for WIC users, and have a database tied in that checks against the debit card purchase?  That's why there are bar codes.

I say go for it!

The article says the ban would affect any beverage with more than 10 calories per 8 ounces. I say that's a great idea. Perhaps it will cause some people to stop drinking the stuff. Although it might just push them to diet soda and then we will have a whole new problem.

I agree with what has already been posted. If you don't like someone telling you how to spend their money then get your own money.

When it's the government giving you the money, yes they do.  It's food stamps.  Not soda stamps.  Actually there are a lot of other things it should ban.  Candy, chips, ice cream.  It should only go to real foods (meat, vegetables, milk, cheese etc..)

The latter are necessities.  The former are luxuries.

so when does it go from being the governments money to the person's money??

once that money changes hands it's no longer the govt. money It's that person's.   I think it would be great if they made better food choices but i'm amazed at the amount of people that for most things don't want the govt. to be able to tell them how to live but it's ok to tell someone else how to spend their money.

I think it is acceptable. Food stamps should be limited on what they can be spent on (more so than they are now) it is not telling the person they cannot buy these items, just that they cannot buy them with food stamps.

If it helps people eat healthy calories instead of trash it sounds good to me.

When the person actually earns it and it's not from a Gov't program.
