Cheating the Garmin

Master  2621    Almaden Valley, San Jose, California |  Subject: Cheating the GarminLong story short, sent my teen son out for a run. Thinking he may blow it off, made him wear my Garmin. 3.67 miles in 26 minutes. He's an athlete, but not a runner. Is there a way to cheat a Garmin? Or do I need to retract my whole speech on keeping in cardio shape when you have to miss sport practices?? And if you can cheat it......how? I may need this info, hypothetically.......  |

Maybe he tied it to a string and whirled it around for a bit in a big circle. Tied it to a model rocket. Put it on the dog and played fetch. Did nothing and it showed your last run. Sent Chuck Norris an e-mail betting him he couldn't use his mind power to bend time and space. Hypnotized you into THINKING he did it. Possibilites are truly endless, but remember Occam's Razor.... -eric |

I would guess that it is possible to hack a data file into the Garmin but it would be way harder to hack it and make it look real than to just run it if you are 17. |

He plays football, baseball, and swims. He's not a runner specifically. He typically turns in a time around 22 minutes. That translates into roughly 26 minutes for 3.67 miles. |

He missed several practices due to school activities, and his deal with his coach was that he'd get a couple of runs in on the days he missed. He did a couple of these 20-30 minuters, but didn't know how far he'd gone. I was trying to make the point that he'd lose cardio fitness quickly if he didn't do something on the off days. So, to prove my point, I suggested he wear the Garmin. I figured he was going 2 miles or so. He whipped that run out without even breathing hard, so my point was completely lost. Ah well - another lesson in 'mom doesn't know everything'. (He did run a race a couple of years ago - a half mary - with no run training to speak of. 1:47. I really shouldn't be surprised.) |

Get in car, drive route, don't hit stop until a reasonable time is displayed. I wouldn't be much out of breath after that, either. He could also have taken his skateboard. |

So, yeah, proud and just a bit annoyed. ....and part of his 'route' is a trail. doesn't have a skateboard, his bike and his car didn't leave. I have to concede this one to the kid.
