Sorry just a little rant while my credit card cools down...

So my wife and I are doing IMCdA and I got to thinking what we've spent so far...

Airline tickets for her the two kids and me.. $2,000
House rental $1,500
Tri-bike transport $300 x 2 = $600
Entry fees $500 x 2 (if I recall correctly) $1,000

Sheesh...

And I'm sure we've got more to buy before June....

OK, sorry.  I knew what I was getting into...

Gotta find a cheaper hobby... like elephant hunting

IMCdA is a little cheaper than IMMoo, I see.  How's that?

Don't go too fast and KQ. You'll spend 2-3X that over there. I'll never do that again.

House rental $1,500

You actually got a pretty good deal on that, assuming it's a full week like most of the house rentals in the area.  A lot of the CdA rental prices are significantly higher for ironman week.

So you're up to $5100 split in half, so $2550 each.

Could be worse...If only one of you were racing you would still have spent $4300.

Actually the house is $2500 but we have some people come out with us for support so they are pitching in on the rental.

I was recalling the entry fee from memory.  It's probably the same as IMMoo.

Add in new wheels too... ')

Razors?  Nah.. I like the Faris Al-Sutan look

I have to drive 30 miles just to ride my bike. The Gas-to-ride program gets very expensive.

Renting a car?  Eating out while you're there?  STUFF at the Ironman store?   Yea, we've done IMMOO and IMCdA, and it was $$$.

Doing IMAZ this year, and thinking we'll save some by driving.....some.

This year I am keeping a spread sheet of all my expenses (gym, coach, shoes, nutrition, tires, entry fees  etc.). I am doing  IMWI and FL, but I only have travel for FL, since I live in Madison.

I'm almost afraid of seeing what kind of expense that spreadsheet will show at the end of the year!

Last year was an expensive year for us with race fees, hotel, new bike, new shoes (4 or 5 pairs over the year) new bike shoes, nutrition and a babysitter 4 mornings during the week in the summer.

I'm doing IMWI again in 2012,  I think (Read:Hope) it will be somewhat less expensive just because I already know what I need.

No kidding. I used to get down on hobbies like golf and skiing because they are SO expensive. Why would anyone (like me, who is not wealthy) want to do something that costs so much?
Ha.
Now I am eating my words.

Couldn't agree more!  Airline tickets, for a family of 5, from Okinawa to Lake Placid last year  >10K
Airline tickets, for a family of 6, from Okinawa to Australia this year = 10K
but the experience for the family is worth even more!

Just go to Disney World during peak season and you will feel better.  $1200 for 4 days, 6x people.  Not counting food or toys or extra  stuff. Just for tickets to really wait in line for a couple of hours for a 5 minute ride.

but priceless....ya right.

I completely agree.  My mom booked a room a the Mirror Lake Inn for IMLP.  The rate there is outrageous.  Luckily my parents want to use this is a quasi vacation for them so they don't mind splurging.

As a side note, last year I was booked at Mirror Lake Inn and switched to the host hotel because it was less expensive.  Host hotel was awful and after seeing what Mirror Lake Inn was like, that would have been a far better value.

You forgot the Ironaman Store before and after the race...

I am making the trip to IM Cozumel and turning it into a vacation, 9 days total (3 before, 6 after race day) it helps on justifying the expense and more importantly, making my wife happy (she does not race)

I'm starting to look into nutrition. Just bought some Infinite (NOT on sale ) and will be getting some Recoverite tomorrow. Bought some new bike shorts before the holidays. Got a new saddle and refitted. Want to get some race wheels.

Trying to keep it on the low end, but it's hard. Stuff is so expensive. Coupled with the fact that I don't really 'know' what I want or how to do it all!

x2 especially for the "first" IM... I refused to wear anything M-Dot until I'd actually done the race so I kind of went crazy after I finished. I think I got out of there with:

Pre-race:
6 cowbells (for family, couldn't find them at home)
Spare tube and c02 (flatted during practice ride)

Post-race:
IMWI tri top
IMWI finishers pullover
IM plain t-shirt
M-Dot visor
IMWI pint glass
IMWI bike bottle
IM and 140.6 bumper stickers
Silver M-Dot necklace (actually a gift from my mom)

Are you crazy?!?!?  Wow, I'd be terrified of doing that.  I prefer the Ronco Rotisserie method, "set (spend) it and forget it!!!!"

And if my wife were to ever find such a spreadsheet....sheesh....game over.
