Subject: Kid's name...
I'm not a "foam at the mouth" Bible fanatic but I enjoy passages from the Old Testement. I have three kids and chose names from my belief and chose names that meant something to me.

Today is my eldest son's birthday and I am reminded of how many raised eyebrows I've gotten for naming him Jordan - based on the quality of the river, flowing strong and true, and I would wish my son to be strong of character and true. Unfortunately there is a topless model named Jordan and a baskeball player Jordan (his Airness) and people assume that I've named him after Jordan the player.

Anyone else called their children unusal names and then been frustrated by others?

Stu

Christian- it's sorta like my name.  At the time, there was Christian Slater the actor and Christian Fletcher the surfer.

Dylan- I picked it out of a name book "god of the sea".  Bob Dylan, and again, at the time, "Dylan" from a show called 90210.     I still can't get my MIL to spell his name right.

granted these aren't unusual, though.  We also  had a girls name picked out, never told anyone what it was, then when my sister had her girl, she named her the EXACT SAME NAME (first, middle) that we had picked out!!   heh.

I don't know a topless model called Jordan, must be an Irish thing?  There's a show here called Crossing Jordan on TV, but that's a chick.

Happy Birthday Jordan!!

My son is Jack, he's not named after Jack Bauer but I like to pretend that he is.  That's kind of the opposite of what you are saying.  My daughter is Julia and when she gets called Julie it's like nails on a chalkboard to my wife.  Especially when it's by my dad.

BTW, my name is John, wife Jennifer, kids Jack and Julia.  In a week and a half we'll have our third and if it's a he-Josh, she-Jordan or Jessica.  I know, we're weird.  Makes it easy to sign Christmas cards.  "J4".

Nope - no different names - we had some in mind though. We called my son Trot when he was still in my stomach - after my fasvorite Red Sox player Trot Nixon. It was kind of a joke but after a while my husband started to think it was cool. Once he got serious about liking it I wimped out. We are plannign on moving back to Boston someday and I know it would be hard to have that name up there. Also, my best friend informed me it is another word for diarreah - that put a stop to the name Trot. My husband wanted to name him Cash but I said no to that one too. We always wanted a Dylan after Bob too, but when we were pregnant we realized it sounded terrible with our last name.

So, we have a Grace, Kathryn (Katie) and Christopher. Kind of boring but they have always been some of my favorites. I don't think Jordan is strage - I had lots of Jordan's when I was a teacher.

By the way - it's my Christopher's birthday today too - he turns 1! Happy Birthday Jordan and Christopher!

Ooohh - you have to keep having kids! I knew a family growing up with 5 kids all with J names. The dad was the only one in the family without a J name. I only remember the mom Joanne and the kids my age - Jack and Julie.

I have a weird name- Hollis. But it's a family name, and I love it. As a kid it was a little embarrassing, but I am not sure I would have wanted to be Karen or Jennifer either, 2 names that were so popular I had multiples in almost every class K-6. My parents called me Holly then.  (ew, I am so NOT a Holly)  I like unique names.  I love the name Jordan (and other OT names too: Samuel, Elijah, Ruth (but I'd call her Ruthie) Noah are a few of my faves...

We named Nola, well, Nola. I guess that's pretty unusual, but we don't get any negative reactions. People seem to like it.

It's an acronym for the two places where she was conceived-- first in concept...where we finally succumed to the inevitability of having a child after many years of marriage, and then where she was literally conceived. We decided to have her when we were living in Los Angeles, and then (finally) conceived her on vacation in New Orleans . Ironically, after dinner at Emeril Lagasse's restaurant of the same name, but she's *not* named after that .

NO+LA = Nola.

Hollis means "Hero" (really cool) from my flicks through baby name books.
Dylan is "God of the Sea" or "Of the Sea" from Welsh - there's many kids called Dylan in Ireland as we're an island nation & fishing is important to us. My daughters are also OT based names, Rachel & Hannah. "Jordan" is the stage name of model Katie Price, who lives up to her name of putting a price on anything...

Some really cool names above. I like the J4!

Well, my name is TY.  NOT short for anything (Tyler, Tyson, Tyrone)....Just Ty.    My sister is TRINETTE (which is a 4th generation derivative of Cahterine).  So I guess for the time, our names were very different.

I had a friend in college who I was going to be roommates with the following school year.  His parents only knew my name and asked him, "Is he black?"   LOL

We got grief from family members about the 4 names we had picked out to choose from; Christian, Kazmir (Lithuanian for Charles), Dane, and Gardner (wife's grandfathers name).

We were asked why would we name a kid after a religion....Because Athiest just didn't seem to work.

Why would we name a kid Cachmere (Kazmir)....Because Angora was already taken.

My mom would have been thrilled if we chose Jordan for a name....she thinks that's a good strong name.

I love classic old fashioned names. My favorite lately is Harriet.   And I also like Wallace (Stegner, Stevens, NOT Mike!)  As we get closer to having a baby this is a very common dinner table topic...  I love both Ella and Fiona, although I confess, the latter makes me want to break out in song:

Way down yonder on the bayou
There lives a little girl-o
Skin so pale
Six feet high
Skinny as a rail
Just one eye

She's the one-eyed Fiona
She's the one-eyed Fiona
She's the one-eyed Fiona
She's the one-eyed Fiona

Her daddy gone to heaven
Her mama won't like you
Her brother he's crazy
He just might bite you
Her sister she's pretty
But she just won't do

She's the one-eyed Fiona
She's the one-eyed Fiona
She's the one-eyed Fiona
She's the one-eyed Fiona

Oh you can say she gonna love you
Because you made a little voodoo
Oh but what they didn't tell you
Is it ain't up to you dude

You better not cross her
You try to boss her
Then you better duck Mister
Here come a cup and saucer

She's the one-eyed Fiona
She's the one-eyed Fiona
She's the one-eyed Fiona
She's the one-eyed Fiona

So if you're going to the bayou
Man I'll tell you all I know
She's got skin so pale
She's six feet high
And she'll look right through you
With just one eye

She's the one-eyed Fiona
She's the one-eyed Fiona
She's the one-eyed Fiona
She's the one-eyed Fiona

Haley: Most people think I was named after the comet but my mom saw Hayley Mills in a movie while she was pregnant and loved the name.

I would name my kid Jack Bauer.

Marlee (the one to my right): her maternal grandmother's name is Marilyn and she's from Sydney, Australia where Marlee is short for Marilyn.

Madigan (Madi, the one to my left):  suggested by an aunt. I liked it because it's common in County Clare in Ireland, where my paternal grandparents are from.

If we had a boy I was pushing for Mordecai.

My three sons:

Dylan: as mentioned, "of the sea." Yes he was named after Robert Zimmerman, who, I'm pretty sure, took his from the Welsh poet.

Dakota: mama bear picked this one, she swears it was from the Dodge truck. She maintains that if Dodge would have had their SUV out then, the other twin would be named "Durango."

Dante': since Dodge didn't have their SUV, we needed another "D" name (all three are DJs) and finally decided on Dante', from the Italian poet of Divine Comedy/Inferno fame, but equally from Dante' Bichette who played for the Rockies at that time.

While we were selecting names for our first child we had Hanna for a girl but no name chosen for a boy.  The little bugger showed up 4 weeks early and was a boy.  While my wife is still getting cleaned up out comes the Sports Illistrated and we start thumbing through.......Shaq...No.....Tiger.....No. The next day we getting ready to be discharged and our son did not have a name yet. We liked Bengamin but not the way it is pernounced in french. So we decided on Benn,  it also means ''my son'' in Hebrew.  So now he has to go through life correcting everbody on how his name is spelt.  Our second child was a girl but we could not imagine ourselves calling the kids in from the park ........Benni- Hanna supper. So we settled for Mandy.

I always liked my unusual name, so gravitated toward that idea when I had kids.

My son is named Cale because I was channel flipping while pregnant and heard Cale Yarborough (probably not spelling it right because I am NOT into race car driving, I just had never heard it before).  And I wanted a C or K name because I like alliteration in names and last name starts with a C, so it was a perfect fit.  Still love it to this day (although every now and then the smart aleck will ask me why I named him after a green leafy vegetable)

However, when I named my daughter Kelsey 18 years ago, the ONLY Kelsey I had EVER heard of was Kelsey Grammer and he's a guy!  And then within a few years the name  exploded in popularity and I was bummed!

Oh well.
