Well, kudos to you for jumping into Long Course with both feet, but as Bobby can attest, this course is B R U T A L.

Regardless, you only get one first time, enjoy it, it is a gorgeous venue and a great time of year!!!

Try and bike on the North Shore as much as possible.  Sadly though there is nothing on Long Island that can simulate this ride.  It's roughly 4300 feet of elevation on the Bike, and the Run is a beast too.  I highly recommend the Kings Park 15k in March, as that run replicates some of the run course.

We will be riding up in Harriman State Park a couple of times (1400 feet climbing per 14-mile loop).  And climbing Bear Mountain.  There will be a bunch of riders with varying experience.  I'll post in this thread when we start riding.

I'd also highly recommend riding the Quassy course beforehand.  We're gonna do an informal group ride in mid-April.  And Target Training Triathlon group holds a pre-ride 2 weeks before the event.

The climb from mile 23 to roughly 31 is just brutal cause it's a constant, non-stop climb that just grinds you down.  So MAKE CERTAIN you ride very easy until you have that climb behind you.  And even after that climb there are a dozen more moderate rollers.

Hey thanks.  I may certainly take you up on that.  Quassy is my supposed prep race for IMNY (my first IM), and am acutely aware of its difficulty, which is precisely why i think my coach has chosen it for me.  Looking forward to the challenge.  It's also my 6yo daughter's birthday that weekend, as well as my mothers, both of whom will be there and hopefully enjoying the park while I am out grinding.  i hear it's a great family event.

Thanks Dream Chaser (Bobby?) for the great advice and ride suggestions.  Tough here on the island to ride safely and to find challenging terrain.  I'm a basement trainer guy mostly because of of my fear of riding outside on LI, but I do like to get upstate (i'm originally from saratoga springs), and also have a cyclist brother-in-law that I like to ride with who lives in Burlington, VT.  I'd love to join you guys on any future training rides.  it's my 3rd year of racing and my first racing with a power meter and coach.  have done a bunch of sprints and olympic distances, but going long (the hard way) this year.  scared and excited.

Is that a sunrise tri kit you have in your avatar?  you may know who's coaching me...

Dave

Sunrise Baby!! Last year I did Quassy and then Lake Placid. Quassy is much tougher per 56-mile loop than Lake Placid. (1200 more feet of climbing roughly). Quassy made the LP bike seem easy, until around mile 100. I think Quassy will set you up nicely to do well on the IMNYC bike course. I only ride my bike outside on the east end and upstate. Western Suffolk and Nassau are too congested.

I'm now officially signed up for 'The Revolution'.

Olympic Race on Saturday and the Half on Sunday. Once again I'm going to be using this race as a prep race for IMLP. Hopefully I won't kill myself on the run like last year and be able to finish strong.

I love Quassy because every race after seems so easy!  I heard someone say recently that having Quassy as your first race of the season is like kicking off football season with the super bowl!  Bring it on!!! Just got a new bike so I'm so ready for those hills!!

There are hills at Quassy?

I love this youtube video of Tara Costa.  Before she rides the Quassy bike course she's all pumped and smiling and enthusiastic; and then after the ride she is, errr, well the opposite.  But she did great and is a great inspiration.  But her naieve eagerness before and then demeanor afterwards nails the Quassy experience. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XwzRpi_Tk9I

I'm on the fence this year but that is a great race and did it last year.

It's not even that it is so overly difficult, but there are enough of the hills that it is really hard to have a fast bike split there.  It's not like some of the other courses around ...  Assume your bike split will be a solid 10-15 minutes slower compared to most other courses...the climbing just zaps your time.  The run is also challenging enough where just getting into rhythm and keeping the legs turning over won't be enough either because there are solid hills that you really have to work hard to get up and it's easy to blow up.

I do like the course though.  I had my best race of the season there last year where I felt good all day.  I wish some of my other races went as well...

Yes, i've been looking at the times. Only the best break 1-2 guys break 4 hrs. Their bike times are quite a bit slower. For the women, even Dibens didn't break 2:30 for the bike last year.

Both, the bike and run courses are quite challenging but oh so FUN! I am going back this year . Quassy makes any race after that seem like it's 'flat'.
