Subject: RIP Gary Carter
I had the opportunity to get to know Gary and his family over the years living in South Florida and he was one of the most genuine, caring, unselfish people I have ever met.  Well, he died today at age 57.   Saw him last at one of his own charity events on 1/15/12 and he cared so much about the charity he was brought in with a wheelchair and poured his heart out for 10 minutes and didnt even have the energy to stand.  He just asked people to help the cause and then left.   Heck of a player, but 10x better family man and overall good person.   Shame.

Brain Cancer?  I can't begin to fathom how that comes about.  I'm 42 now and beginning to realize it's all a crap shoot.  I can exercise all I want and stop this "bad" habit and do that "bad" habit in moderation all for nought.  

He was and still is my favorite MLB catcher of all time.  Gave 100% on every play.

Thanks for sharing that about him. He seemed to play the game with so much passion and emotion.

Really neat that you got to know him. Just so sad.

Thank you.  All I knew about him is what I gathered from reading about him in the press.  Sounds like he really was as good as advertised.  That's good to hear.  Damn cancer.

Sad news. As an avid Pirates fan, I used to watch him play against my team while with the Expos and the Mets. And only 57yo. Sad indeed. Peace and prayers for his family.

We had a mix up in my family tonight that allowed me to stop at the local watering hole after my run while my wife ran the kids to swimming, dancing, and basketball......don't ask....I'm trying to figure out how to bottle it..

Anyway, I find myself sitting at the bar next to a guy who can hold a decent sports conversation. He's probably late 20's or so........during a lull I say, "man, Gary Carter died today"....he looks at me with a blank stare and says, "I'm sorry, I don't know who that is".

I'm old....I shoulda just went home and took the kids to swimming.

RIP Gary Carter....I enjoyed watching you enjoy the game.

First sorry for your loss, as it sounds like you and Gary were friends. 

Second, I was very saddened myself when I heard the news this morning.  I didn't know the guy, but I always did like him.  When he was playing ball he was one of my favorite players and I always got the impression that he was a very genuine and stand up kinda guy.  More current athletes should follow his example. 

Third, effing cancer sucks.

Grew up watching him in Denver with the Bears (AAA Club for Expos) - he was with The Rock (Raines), The Hawk (Hawkins) and many others.

RIP Gary - sounds like you were a much better man than ball player (and you were a great player) and if we all hit that goal in life we would all be much better for it!

Something I am trying to ingrain within my own self.  Thanks for the reminder, Bill.

Ha. I just remember many times going to see my Bucs play the Mets. My grandfather always got us seats by first base or Right field, and all our section did was taunt Darryl Strawberry.

Seriously though, Gary Carter was like Cal Ripken. Just an overall good dude.

I wonder how many times I wrote Gary Carter, Tom Seaver, Mookie Wilson and Keith Hernandez while keeping score at the game.

In fact, I wonder if kids even know how to keep a scorebook?

heard a great story on ESPN talking about how good a guy Carter was...nobody had ever utter a cuss word, until after rounding 1st base in that miracle game in '86 he told the 1st base coach something to the effect of, "I wasn't (bleep)ing making the last out!"  Great stuff.  I like to believe he's somewhere smiling.
