I am a self admitted documentary addict.  I just finished Food Matters, and Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead. I need some recommendations, reviews, etc.  I don't have a specific type I'm looking for.

Any good ones you've seen lately and can recommend??

Books or movies?  Oh wait, sorry, I now notice that you wrote 'seen'.  I was going to suggest a book.

I like em too...

Murderball is all that comes to mind at the moment....   Looking forward to taking notes off this thread

ETA.  War.  Restrepo.  Tough to watch

And I am ashamed to admit I haven't yet watched The Cove.....   distressing, but must be seen

I really want to see - "Unbreakable: The Western States 100"

"Forks over knives" is very good, as is "The Fog of War"

And I'm with ChrisM, I can't bring myself to watch "The Cove"Cry.

I have The Cove sitting in my netflix queue, but I don't know if I can bear to watch it either!

A good one is Running on The Sun, about the BadWater race.

Run for your Life was also good about the founder of the NYC Marathon

If looking for sports/tri related ones, my mom gave me one for Xmas, I hadn't heard of, called Bicycle Dreams, haven't watched yet (sorry mom).  Synopsis:

They are seekers, madmen, and angels hell-bent on riding across America on a bicycle in less than ten days. But what begins as the adventure of a lifetime is transformed in an instant when tragedy strikes the race. These voyagers discover what is truly at stake as they pedal on, praying for the deliverance only the finish line can bring. By journey's end, some are saved, others are lost, but all learn that the fuel that takes a soul toward its own true destiny is desire.

Wouldn't a documentary book just be any work of non-fiction?

Spirit of the Marathon is on instant netflix. It's about the 2005 Chicago Marathon and follows 6 runners (including Deena Kastor) throughout their training cycle and the race.

As most here know, I loves me some documentaries. A few of my favorites?

"Gates of Heaven" by Errol Morris (about people who run pet cemetaries, at times hilarious and touching. Tough to find, but awesome.)

"Anvil! The Story of Anvil" I'm not even a huge fan of metal but this movie just rocks. It could be seen as the story about anyone pursuing whatever they love at whatever cost. Fantastic.

"Startup.com" - a movie that means a lot to me because I basically lived it albeit somewhat vicariously as a guy responsible for marketing a somewhat dubious dotcom. Really captures the hubris of that era.

"American Movie" - somewhat similar to "Anvil!", it's about two dudes whose passion is making z-grade horror films.

Sure, I love "Hoop Dreams", "Food Inc." and the more well-known Errol Morris docs, but these are some of my lesser known faves.

One more...

I also really enjoyed "Bigger, Stronger, Faster" about steroid use in sports, including at the highschool level. I thought it was very thoughtful and balanced, with some surprising conclusions... and a sad epilogue you'll have to Google AFTER watching.

I enjoyed "Catfish" - there is some debate as to whether it was legitimately a documentary. I also enjoyed "People Say I'm Crazy" - about schizophrenia.

King of Kong - about competitive Donkey Kong players

We also enjoyed the ones about trekkies (I believe it was called "Trekkies") and LARPers - (Monster Camp was the one I remember; there is also Darkon).

An anvil documentary?  I know that's getting a thumbs-down from Mr. Wil E. Coyote.

Harlan County, USA.

It's a classic...and fascinating to me.
Trailer here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCiVMngILEI

Also: the opening song of that trailer is one of the first songs I ever sang in public.

X whatever on Anvil, good stuff.

Along the same lines, Metallica in Some Kind of Monster.  Interesting view into the corporate and emotional workings of a metal banc
