Subject: Wearing two outfits to a wedding ... ?

Ok y'all - I'm heading to a wedding in a few weeks, and I've just heard that quite a few of my friends will be wearing not one but two outfits - as guests - one to the ceremony and one to the reception. The ceremony is at 4 pm and the reception doors open at 5:30, and the church is only a few blocks from the hotel where the reception will be and where most guests are staying. It is a large wedding, formal but not black-tie.

So ... is this extravagance? I've never heard of this before - two outfits to a wedding. I could see if the ceremony were in the morning, or if the ceremony were formal and the reception not or vice versa, although neither is the case here ... I'm thinking, knowing this particular group of friends, that it's just a group of women who don't get out much and are just looking for excuses to buy/wear two outfits.

Am I an unfashionable old fuddy duddy, at the tender age of 37, wearing only one dress?!

Also - am I bit oversensitive thinking it's slightly disrespectful to the bride - it's her wedding, not their fashion show?

To each their own. Hopefully, they won't wear a Lady Gaga meat dress.

From one fuddy duddy to another, how is this disrespectful to the bride, or really anyone's concern how may outfits anyone wears?

It's the "don't distract from the bride" tradition. No white, no black, no bright colors. It seems a bit over the top unless the venues are so disparate. I had friends get married on top ofa mtn that required a hike, so we all wore hiking boots with our dresses and then changed for the reception in town, but that was more like PPE. The bride had on bike shirts under her dress and they road a tandem down e mountain into town.

I think it depends on the ceremony.  I've heard of it happening.  If the reception is outside (Florida), there is going to be some activities that "church clothes" won't work for, or that family regularly does a LOT of dancing, or something similar I've heard of people changing for the reception.  It's been more out of comfort or necessity than a display of........ opulence? Whenever I've seen it, it was dressing down, not up for the reception.

I could SEE this happening for several of the reasons users posted above.  Other things to consider...there are people that believe you should wear more conservative clothing in church but then want to wear something more revealing for the reception, or people just couldn't decide what they wanted to wear.  Like I said...I see the reasoning behind two different dresses even if I think it's silly.

To answer your question though, you can wear just your one dress...you'll be fine. :D

Since when does a firehouse, folding chairs, a keg of Iron City and hulushki, peroghi and kielbassa require two outfits? Polka like it's 1999!

We went to a wedding and Mrs. Goggs had to change between the ceremony and the reception or there would've been multiple wardrobe malfunctions when the dancing commenced. Dress that's appropriate at the reception may not be appropriate for the ceremony.

I'm on the fence. I think it's a little self-centered and strange/would never do it myself unless there were unusual circumstances as mentioned above, but probably wouldn't call anyone out on it either.

No one "gets" Deer Hunter and the wedding scene. I practically cry every time I see it.

OK, I'll mark this on my list of things some women care deeply about but that normal people (i.e., guys) wouldn't give a rat's behind about.

Cool

Thanks guy. I had never heard of this before, and it's been a few years since I've been to a wedding, so I was a bit concerned I'd missed the boat on some kind of fashion trend. Although, not that I particularly care to keep up with this crowd but it still made me stop & think.

I'll be wearing one and only one dress. And it's one the bride and some of the other guests have already seen me in! THE SHAME! Lol. Laughing

Not my thing either. Unless my church outfit was not very comfortable and I could dress down/more comfortable for the reception. Still the packing, shoe matching, jewelery - yuck. One outfit is enough for me.

Oh come on Bear... you mean to tell me you never been to a spring wedding where you wore nice boots and dress shirt to the ceremony and then had to change into your rubber boots and ratty t-shirt b/c the area near the boiler was in water and mud and you didn't want to get crawfish fat on your nice dress shirt?  lol
Maybe the west side of the swamp was a little higher class?

Have to say, though, I've never changed into ANOTHER DRESS at a wedding.  Blue jeans or shorts, yes, but not another dress
