Wow, what a pile of utter garbage.  The first time I've been actually disappointed in an Apple product.  Jobs would have never let it be released in this state.

Some examples: http://theamazingios6maps.tumblr.com/

Yeah. It has some good points, but it definitely needed some more beta before this.

A question for the apple nerds:  If I update my 3Gs and 4s phones, will it default to apple maps?  Is the current google maps app available for download?  I'm interested in many of the iOS 6 features, but am not crazy about downgrading the maps (which I use all the time).

According to ABCnews, you have to use Google maps via the browser.

I DO use the turn by turn, especially when I'm walking in the city looking for an address. But they upgraded email functionallity where you can acutally attach a photo while typing an email instead of being forced to start in the photos and then launching email from there. So you can actually attach one in a reply now.

iOS 6 maps are far from garbage. I have been using them for 3 months and have had zero issues. Yes they are having some problems (major) in Europe, and it needs a lot of work, but as usual, it's getting blown out of per portion.

Apple via public statement:

"Customers around the world are upgrading to iOS 6 with over 200 new features including Apple Maps, our first map service," said spokeswoman Trudy Miller. "We are excited to offer this service with innovative new features like Flyover, turn by turn navigation, and Siri integration. We launched this new map service knowing it is a major initiative and that we are just getting started with it. Maps is a cloud-based solution and the more people use it, the better it will get. We appreciate all of the customer feedback and are working hard to make the customer experience even better."

Yes, if you upgrade to 6.0 you will lose Google Maps and get Apple Maps.  Honestly if you are on a 3GS or a 4 I would not bother.  Most of the new features are not available on the 3GS or 4 (only on the 4S and 5).

Google is "working on" a standalone app for iOS6.  The web app of GM is OK but pretty clunky and not really integrated into the OS.

I like Google maps. I know noting about Apple maps. I have no need or desire to use a new map app that I know nothing about. I will not be upgrading.

I used it for the first time last night and was pleasantly surprised.  My standards (or use of maps) might not be as intense as others though..

Hehehe, ya totally.

BTW Nokia Maps and Nokia Drive rock. You can down load maps and then use them with no data connection. So handy on road trips or using your phone where roaming data charges would be too high (US phone being used in Europe for example).

I upgraded to 6 on my 3GS...haven't really tried the maps function yet.

Not to hijack, but anyone else that upgraded on a 3GS...a question...when I was synching the phone I now have a big yellow section of "other" in the bar that shows how full your phone is...and it makes my phone "over capacity".  But I've never even been CLOSE to capacity before.  Anyone know why the big yellow "other" bar now?

It's always been there.  Other is everything that is not in the other categories so

email, docs, app storage (not the apps themselves but any files they store on the phone, e.g. dropbox favorites), map cache, text messages etc...

How's the street view in Apple maps?

Personally I think google should just say screw em and not update it for 6. They want a private gated community, let em have it.

There is no street view.  There is no public transportation maps.  Traffic is non-existent in a lot of places that GM gives tons of info.

Yes, but my "other" block PRIOR to the update was very very small...hardly noticeable.  Now it's HUGE and makes my phone over capacity...and I didn't do anything but update the software and synch the phone!

I'd do a backup and restore.  It's likely stuff leftover from the upgrade.

Actually, the more users, the better a map app works.  Especially for things like traffic.  Google doesn't want to loose the iOS6 user numbers, and Apple is trying to keep and increase their user numbers.

Okay, I'll try that tonight.  Never done it before.  Is that just the button under update that says to revert to factory if your phone isn't working right?
