Expert 952 Chicagoland | Subject: Downtown places to eat? Hi all! My husband's company is having their Holiday Party next weekend at the Palmer House. We will be there for 2 nights (fri afternoon through Sat lunch) and I was wondering if anyone can recommend fun stuff to do and good places to eat around there. We can drive, but if there are places within walking distance, we'd probably prefer that. Not too interested in too expensive, and doesn't have to be fancy, just good food. But, recommend anything you can, I can tuck away other spots for some future use. I just don't know that much about good places to eat in the city.. Thanks! |

Chicago, IL | Subject: RE: Downtown places to eat? Fun stuff to do: Adler Planetarium, Field Museum, and Shedd Aquarium are a cool way to kill a day in a single location (just drive down and park for the day in the lot). The Art Institue, Buckingham Fountain, and The Bean are very close to your hotel. Navy Pier is free, as is Licoln Park Zoo, a few miles north of the city. Also, I recommend going to the Signature Room (bar, not the restaurant) on the 95th floor of the Hancock Tower. You'll avoid the fee of going to the Observation Deck, but you'll get the same view, and the added benefit of a relaxing drink. Places to eat: Bennigans is close to your hotel, but kind of touristy. Millers Pub is very cool on the inside, but I've never eaten there. Elephant & Castle is a traditional British pub, with good food and beer selection. Buca di Beppo, in River North, serves good pasta, and is my standard pre-race venue. If you want a truly eye opening experience, go to Ceres (inside the Board of Trade) for a Friday cocktail. NOTE: It closes at 8pm, and gets very busy with the post-work crowd by 5pm. If you like liquor, this is the place to go. If you find yourself up at Lincoln Park Zoo, head to RJ Grunts. One of my favourites. Excellent food. Another good spot in that area is Chicago Pizza & Oven Grinder. |

Chicago | Subject: RE: Downtown places to eat? I'm going to go with places you could easily grab a taxi or take the L/bus, too...for Mexican I really love Zocalo on Ontario. Near the Palmer House is Pizano's pizza & pasta on Madison. If you like tapas there's Cafe Iberico on LaSalle. Italian Village is always popular right near PH. For Indian we really love Khyber Pass out by us in the suburbs & order carryout there once or twice a week (downtown location on Wacker right near Hyatt). Heaven on Seven for the gumbo? There's always the Rick Bayless empire if you like him. |

Elite 3515 Romeoville, Il | Subject: RE: Downtown places to eat? Fun things: Go take a walk through Millenium Park. See the bean! Catch a concert there in the Park for free. Go to the John Hancock building and get a beer at the bar up at the top. It's the Signiture Room I think. Best view in the city. Any of the museums or planaterium there are very cool as well as the aquerium. I love the Museum of Science and Industry. Catch a Bears game or Blackhawks game. If you like jewelery check out jewelers row, also right by the Palmer house
Eat: Right by the Palmer house Millers is good pub food. For fancier, there are several. The Italian villiage has 2 nice resteraunts inside that are good and reasonable. Giordanno's is the best pizza around. Edwardo's is awesome too if you get down to printers row. If you like steaks go to Ruth's Chris or Gibson's, these are pricey though. You can also eat at the Signature room, but it's also pricey. Harry Carry's has good steak too but slightly less stellar ambience and service.
Have fun! |

Champion 34263 Chicago | Subject: RE: Downtown places to eat? That's three blocks from my condo so I know the area very well. A really nice unique cafe is `The Artist's Cafe' near Congress and Michigan. They serve typical cafe foods, club sammiches and soups and all that. If you care to venture a little further down the road, like six blocks, go to the Eleven City Diner on 11th and Wabash, they have great matzo ball soup and sandwiches. For dinner I would highly recommend The Gage on Michigan and, like, Jackson I think it is. The food is delicious and the prices aren't TERRIBLE. It's still a bit pricey. Might I also recommend Petterinos on Dearborn and Washington (I think) near all the theaters. The food is good and the price isn't too bad. If you want expensive steaks you MUST go to the Chicago Chop House. It's expensive but it's so worth it. Best steak I've ever had and I've had a lot of steaks. But again, you're going to pay $50 for just the steak, not including apps, sides or desserts. If you want chicago-style pizza go to Gino's East on Dearborn and Congress. The crust isn't as thick and cornbready and the price is right. If you want booze, come to my 'hood and go to a proper South Loop pisser called Kaseys. It's a fun little locals pub. If you want a cool experience might I recommend the upper deck of the Wit Hotel on State and Lake. Around your hotel there are some other bars (the aforementioned Millers is a Chicago staple) but mostly just touristy fare. For nightlife I like to go up to Hubbard Street, starting at State and Hubbard and working west. There's my favorite bar, Theory, and the rest -- Rockit Bar, Howl at the Moon, O'Callaghans, and the Paris Club (unless you're 21 and busty and dressed to the nines you probably won't get into Paris) and then Boss Bar, where all the industry people hang out after 2am. Good times. |

Master 1730 Straight outta Compton | Subject: RE: Downtown places to eat? No overnight trip to downtown Chicago is complete without clogging your arteries @ Lou Mitchell's on Jackson. It's as Chicago as you can get for breakfast. The portions are ridiculously huge, so it'll hold you over through lunch too. |

Where on Jackson?Of course you haven't- you're an athlete! It's 565 W. Jackson, few blocks west of the river. It's horrible for you, but it's so good once every few years. http://www.loumitchellsrestaurant.com/ |

So good but so not healthy. And a long long wait. The good news is it's right next to the Trek store so you can shop for bike gear that you can't afford while waiting. |

My loft is one block west... I don't get the appeal, its the unoffiical start of Route 66 back in the day. Its just diner food. I like Las Plamas on North and Honore although that isn't RiverNorth, but worth the cap ride imo Edited by running2far 2013-01-15 3:30 PM |

I agree with this. I'm a much bigger fan of Meli in Greektown. Incredible breakfast! For cheap and good breakfast though you can go to Under 55. It's a cafeteria in the basement of the building just across the street (eas) of the Palmer House |

Regular 641 Chicago | Subject: RE: Downtown places to eat? You will be pretty close to the theater district. I have no idea what's playing right now, other than Book of Mormon. Or you can just take a cab/the L and go to Second City. You also could walk a few blocks south to the Harold Washington Library, which is 10 floors of awesomeness.

Champion 15211 Southern Chicago Suburbs, IL | Subject: RE: Downtown places to eat? So many to choose from. Gioco (Italian) Hub51 (Great fish tacos!) The Saloon (chop house, and my favorite in town) The Purple Pig (all things pork) Publican (also all things pork and a great beer list) The Gage (Americana with a Canadian twist. Pretty good poutine and a ridiculously expensive but fabulous elk saddle) Those are just a few of my favorites.
