Sad, but it can happen.   Hope it doesn't ever happen on the USA Version.

Was the show really cancelled?

...or did all the contestants just surrender.

Really, jump inot the water and die from plling on a rope.  I may be jaded but my first thought was what kind of drugs was he on.  My second less jaded thought was it must be one of those under lying conditins.  If they just got there, everyone should still be pretty fresh.

Nuts! Sounds like there was a condition they didn't identify in the medical examination. Who dies from a heart attack during tug-o-war?

I'm surprised more people don't get hurt/die. I was watching the American Survivor from last week, and they were lifting these huge, heavy boxes up some stairs, and one almost fell on some people below. It would have done some serious damage!

Yeah, for sure he had an underlying condition...just like the guy who died at Alcatraz this year probably had.  Stress tests don't even begin to approach the level of stress something like this would put on your heart.

Truth be told I'm really surprised it hasn't happened before.  Medical does a good job, but there is no way around the fact that the show is filmed fairly far from any trauma centers.  And this guy got prompt medical attention...the only "maybe" you could even throw out there is "maybe if he was closer to a hospital"...

And in the past they have retired really dangerous challenges.  There was one that involved trying to throw a football into a basket while people went all "rugby style" on you trying to keep you from doing it.  That challenge took out something like 3 people to injuries so they don't use it anymore.  Then there was the one where the girl broke her wrist last season.  The challenges are no joke...especially when people are fighting for a million dollars!  I've seen so many hard falls...it's amazing no one has done more serious damage....

Heart conditions exist and can go unnoticed by doctors. Look at the young kids in HS and the guy in the NBA that died from a heart condition a couple of years ago and he was an elite athlete with team doctors.  Scary stuff.

I sort of wait for something to go bad on a Survivor.  I mean, statistically, it has to happen eventually.

BUT, I think that it may just jump the shark before then.  I mean, I love the show and will watch another season, but I can see the end of my interest unless they do something more to get my interest.  The "favorites" one is scraping the bottom of the barrel to me.

Playboy bunnies vs Chippendale?  Everyone is 18-20?  Everyone is over 55?  All men?  All women?  Married/dating couples?  Something REALLY different.

This whole event kind of undermines the entire show, right down to the title.

I think that's kind of where they are on the Biggest Loser now. The underlying concept isn't really enough to drive the interest in the show anymore so every season they have to try to reinvent the wheel. Sometimes it works (like this past season), and sometimes it doesn't, as when they had the three groups with people of different ages.

In an odd turn of events....

Doctor for French 'Survivor' kills self after contestant dies
April 1, 2013, 2:25 PM EST

PARIS (Reuters) -- A doctor working for France's version of the television reality show "Survivor" committed suicide on Monday, leaving a note saying he had been unfairly criticized over the death of a contestant, the program's broadcaster said.

Thierry Costa, 38, killed himself in Cambodia, the setting of the show "Koh-Lanta," which was halted last week following the heart attack and death of contestant Gerald Babin, said the TF1 television channel.

Costa's suicide note, published in full on TV1's website, said the media had made "unfair accusations and assumptions" about his treatment of Babin.

Very weird. He's a Dr. People are going to die on his watch, even if he tries to help. Guess he wasn't prepared for that to happen.

They have tried different things in the past like old vs young

white vs black vs hispanic vs asian

men vs women

I think they just need to get back to the way it used to be with interesting contestants.  Get away from the "returning players" concept.

I know, I was just thinking taking it to the extreme.  ALL women.  ALL men, ALL under 21, ALL over 60.  Just to see what that dynamic would provide.

I'm wondering if everyone was really young, would it turn into more of a Lord of the Flies situation without the wisdom of age?  If everyone was over 55, would there be more subtle gameplay with less trash talk?  More "civilized? maybe?

The dynamic of 20 women or 20 men without the other sex to temper it could be interesting.  I know a group of guys will act totally different if even ONE girl is introduced into the mix.

I really like the couples concept. It would be very interesting if they got split up.  Also, you could play it either way  - either fight to the death to keep your partner OR sacrifice one when the time is right.

Yes, but who wants to see a bunch of 60+ year old's in bikini's? Ha!

Haven't they done men vs. women in the past?
