You know what really kills teams? Not having a QB as good as Aaron Rodgers.

Unless you have a boneheaded safety that lets a receiver get behind them on a 70 yard desperation throw with 30 seconds left and no timeouts...

I will die with the that nightmare in my head.

You really have to wait for the contract details to come out that outlines the salary cap hit before making assumptions like this.  Long term mega deals are designed specifically with the salary cap in mind, and because contracts are not fully guaranteed, there really is no reason to get caught up in the the 6 year/$110M numbers.  Those are just part of the picture frame and really doesn't tell you much about the actual contract implications.

Asomugha signed a 5 year/$60 million contract with Philly last year.  You would think that would cripple Philly if Asomugha didn't play to his potential.  Well, turns out his contract was structured in a way that Philly could cut him after one year, and only take a cap hit of $4 million in 2013.  Still a hit, but you can't just do simple math and assume that his average salary of $12.5 million will automatically count against the cap for 5 years.

GMs know when they have more cap room in certain years, and when they have to save up for later years.  Players also know that when they sign big contracts, they are vulnerable to being cut, or being forced to restructure (which will happen to Flacco in year 4).  It's all part of the business.

Your Seahawks have an invoice due very soon. They'd better run up the credit card now, because the bill is coming.

I know, that's why I'm stressing. What if we win a Superbowl in the next 2 years? I mean that's awesome and I'm going to go streaking through the streets, but then how much is Russell going to get, $25M? $30M?

pitt83 - 2013-04-27 4:40 AM From ESPN.com: If they cut Sanchez -- when they cut him -- the Jets probably will take a $12.35 million cap hit. Add in the cap charge for the departed Revis, and you're talking about $25.35 million in ghost money -- 20 percent of the salary cap devoted to two players no longer on the team.

If they decide Geno is the QB, this is the way to go. Just remove the circus completely. Also dump Tebow IMO. If they think he really has a chance to be their QB, they need to do this.

No one can QB that mess of an offense. 1 guy is taking the heat for the 10 lousy ones in the huddle with him. They should have drafted quantity. Jets will be drafting another QB in 2016 if not sooner. Expect a decade of mediocrity.

Yeah, so with this thought in mind, start cutting guys, clean house, take the $$$$ hit, and try to build from scratch.

A new coach might be in order as well.

It's crazy. The new CBA and rookie salary cap was implemented to help hold down salaries for rookies who hadn't done a thing in the NFL yet and boost salaries for veteran players with years of experience in the league. Instead, all the money is going to a handful of stars, especially the elite QB's, and veteran role players are getting cut left and right to pay the contracts of these select few.

I think they're going to have to re-examine things again soon. But when you look at it, it's kind of like what has been going on in corporate America as well. CEO compensation keeps growing at the expense of valuable, experienced employees.
