Subject: RE: Favorite local foodVietnam--I have a couple. Grilled chicken with lemongrass and chili. (ga nuong va xa ot ). It's either served with rice and veggies on the side, or as a meal in a bowl with rice noodles and a whole bunch of garnishes--pickled veggies, cucumbers, lettuce, herbs, peanuts, French fried onions, etc. The former's better when it's not super-hot outside; the latter is one of the few things I can get down for dinner when the heat index is in the triple digits. The other dish is one I have only occasionally as I'd have to go downtown for it--It's called bo luc lak and essentially is a stir-fry with steak, fries, A1 and chili sauce, and onions. Probably a fusion of American and Vietnamese tastes from the war years. Sounds gross but if you are having a red meat craving, it's actually quite good.
Oregon--Pancakes from a particular restaurant. They use buckwheat flour and oatmeal and they are amazing with bananas and walnuts and their homemade all-fruit jam. My favorite feed after Saturday morning long master's workout. |
