Alright all my fellow BT'ers heading to PP.  Schmize and I want to lay down a challenge.   We all know that things are a little spicier with some trash talking and extra motivation.  And on mile 4 of the run if the thought of helping my team win keeps me going, all the better.  How about if we split up everyone doing the OLY into two teams?  We'll try to keep it as even as possible based on training times and expectations for race day.  I'll head one team and Schmize will head the other.  Teams can decide on names.  We'll simply take the total times (if teams are even numbered) or avg per person if one team has an extra person.  Trash talking is encouraged and expected.  Losers do something like change sig line for a week or month.  It's not so much about actual penalties, we don't even have to have one if we don't want.  Race day bragging rights would be enough motivation.

So who's in?

Any other refinements?  Ideas?

One cool part of this is the way the course is laid out we will have lots of chances to see each other during the race and encourage/trip others as need be.

(I guess I'm leaving my frame pump on the bike for this one.)

Sure, what the heck, I'm in.

Who wants me on their team? I'm a pretty good swimmer and biker, but I run like a dolphin!

Seriously, out of water. With no feet. Just flippers. Yes. That's right.

I'm in....I'll warn ya though, I swim like I'm draggin' a parachute out my shorts, not the speediest on the bike but can hold my own on the run (on a good day, when the moon is in the 3rd quarter, on even celestial calendar years........) oh yeah, I'm in!

When do we start throwin' the trash around

Of course I am in. And I expect my team to win. We will have to come up with a good bet, but like you said, bragging rights should go a long way. I am sure once we have everyone committed we can start working out the details and trash talking.

As far as refinements, I think what you have is pretty good. We could also do a guess the total time of your team, for an extra prize or something.

Whatever, I like it.

Oh yeah, and my expectation for the olympic is around 6 hours. I mean, why not shoot for the stars? J/K.... I like the bike, can't swim like Whizz, can't run like markK. Should be interesting, but I think we can come up with some even teams....

Let it start..........

Well, no offense to Mark but if it were up to me I want Laura on my team because, frankly, I've already had my butt handed to me once by her this summer (2 mi OWS) and I can't go the whole offseason with my wife saying "Laura whipped your again".  She seems to get some kind of special delight in that (my wife, not Laura, although she might too....)

I'm game!  Of course, all bets are off until I actually make it through the swim without having to be pulled in from the bottom of Lake Andrea.... and as long as I do, my T1 times will reflect time taken to do a happy dance.

Sooo.... can't really swim, can kinda of bike, will hold my own on the run.... this is my first Oly distance, though, so I'm really just hoping to finish.  Goal is under 3:30.  Secret goal is 3:15 (hmmm... maybe now it's my not-so-secret goal?).

I'm definately in. Swim and bike are good for me but I tend to slow it down a little on the run. Not by choice but it just always seems to happen. How do we decide on teams??

I've decided to start calling my secret goal my Titanic goal.  Here's why.

1.  Since I tell it to people it's not really secret.

2.  If I make it I'll cross the line like Leonardo saying "I'm the King of the World!"

3.  Going for it might end up sinking the ship.

As far as picking teams goes, I'm open to suggestions.  Maybe we all list our realistic goals and try to make teams as even as possible?  Not our "I'll be happy if I finish" goal but it doesn't have to be our "secret" goal either.  Our "If everything goes normal with only minor gliches and I do what I know I can do" goal would be what I'm looking for here.

We could even put something in (if we really want to complicate it - which I'm not necessarily in favor of) that there's an adjustment factor.  For example, if I say my goal is 3:15 and I do 2:45, well, that's a huge difference and maybe only 10% of how much I beat my goal by should count toward the team total since I obviously didn't set my goal right (unintentionally, of course).

Either that or I'll take all the fast people on my team.

Another thought - we could put all the first timers (for OLY) on one team and the veterans on another and see how that matches up.  Veterans vs. Rookies kind of thing.  I kind of like that one.

Other ideas?

I am sure we can come up w/ some even teams. A quick glance tells me that only Whizz, CindyK, and MarkK have done Olys, and they were all sub 3hrs.

Most everyone else has done sprints, and the times are something like this from RR (swim, bike, run).

triingfrosept07 1m40s 16mph 9.45min/mile
hangloose 1m37s 19mph 8:17min/mile
schmize 1m41s 21.2mph 7:49min/mile
jowisc 2m01s 20.65mph 7:30min/mile (although, jowisc is faster than this from logs)
jschmitchicago 2m26s 18.5mph 9:34min/mile
krush_803 Doesn't log, first triathlon?
mobrochta 2m 18mph 9:20min/mile
badgertrigirl Done Triathlons, doesn't fill out RR
startingtotri 2m12s 18.1mph 8:49min/mile
esmies 1m35s, 20mph, 8:24min/mile

I think we can work with this, and or our goals. We need to make the teams pretty quickly though, so we can start the trash talking. I like splitting Mark and Cindy, b/c, well that is just fun and good for their relationship

So, I propose

I did an Oly last year. I think my time was under 3 hours. Hard to tell because they made a mistake on the swim course and it was shorter than it was supposed to be.

Pretty interesting stuff Scott, thanks.  Some are faster in one, some in another, but it's interesting how close everyone really is.  For me, seeing that swim time is hilarious considering what my training times are - that course must have been WAY short.  Ha!

Hi guys - Just saw this thread today, as I was busy with visiting family all weekend.  I'm in for the challenge, although it is my first Oly (and I'm freaking out!) so beware the team that picks me!  I'm ultra-competitive though, so this just might help me through the pain I'll be in at about mile two of the run.  My realistic goal is sub 3:30.  Oh, and if you're into splitting up couples, jowisc is my hubby (and, yes, he is faster than a 7:30m/m!).

OK. I am going to throw this out, and its totally open to debate, but I think this would be a good challenge.

Based on the people that replied, and the fact that we have two couples which need to be split up for side bets, etc. And its nearly impossible to do this democratically, unless we pick from a hat, I suggest the following:

jowisc and markk are fast, so split them up
hangloose and I are pretty equal, so split them up.

So:

Team 1: Hangloose, jowisc, cindyK, whizz, tringforsept07
Team 2: Schmize, markk, esmies, jschmitchicago, startingtotri

Things may change when others respond, but here is my first pass.

Thoughts??

Schmize

PS. If team one is looking for a name, how about "2nd place is cool".

All for the challenge. Not good with the trash talk though. One because of a Catholic pride/guilt thing and the second 'cause I suffer from the George Costanza comeback line thing - I always think of the good line later.  Not sure how I feel about being on opposite teams with jschmitchicago. One she's  a tough - mind over matter. And two there's that whole sleeping with the enemy  and having to hear about this for the rest of the year. And as guys know, wife talking smack to husband equals very funny and good natured. But husband talking smack to wife is very bad and how can I say this in PG - ahhh, very lonely for the husband. But I will be a good team player and put my own needs aside and do my very best (but I'm really pulling for you to do really, really well jschmitchicago).

Here's your fallback comeback line.  "Talk to Hangloose, I'm here to race."

That should work for just about anything EXCEPT the competition with the wife situation, you're on your own there!

Oh, and schmize, "May I fetch you another post-race beer?" would be appropriate for your team name.

All looks good to me.  And I even know how to be an asset on the swim ... since I think Cindy and Whizzzzzzz are in my age group, I'll simply hang onto their ankles and drag them down with me.  It's a win-win situation ... I get across the lake faster, and they get time to enjoy the scenery.

No, no, when you trash talk you are supposed to make the OTHER team feel bad.  Sheesh.

So, TEAM ONE, any suggestions on a team name?  BTW, the juvenile in me cracks up whenever I say/type PP Challenge.  Sounds like something we did when we were kids.

heh....heh....I said PP.....heh.....

Just saw this thread. Sure I am in. I am slow in the swim, bike and run but I can drive my car to the course pretty fast. I am fine with the teams the way they are as long as all the others on my team are the fastest.

By the way, I heard that some are getting together for dinner Saturday. Is that still on and what are the details? I need to go and start preparing my trash talking material.

heeeheee, I am in there!  Teams look good to me, I think...I'm having trouble telling which teams are which.  I'm thinking of a goal time of 2:50, yeah yeah I know it's slower than last year but hey I am getting older...

Trying4Sept, Dinner is at the Chancery in PP at 6 pm.  There is a thread around here somewhere, or PM MarkK.  I am on vacation     so have limited computer access.

Maybe we'll have official goal time submitting at dinner on Sat and if anyone is not going to be there you can send them to me or Scott (schmize) before hand.

Husband/wife teams - I've already gotten word that there is a potential equipment sabotage concern.  Any person on the other team caught engaging in this inexcusable act of cheating will be punished by having to spend Saturday night playing with my kids in the hotel pool clean our the other team's bikes after the race.  I know this may seem cruel and unusual punishment, but this is serious stuff.

I don't have a goal time! I'm training through this race... so I'm just hoping not to be too exhausted to finish vertically. Realistically, if it's flat and I use the hammer and hold method of racing... (hammer the bike, hold on for the run) I should finish around 3 hours. Am hoping for a decent swim, too! EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE We are going to rock! Am glad hangloose is on my team... he's a great runner!

Ideas for team names:

Why don't we use our unofficial leaders name and call ourselves, "Hanging in the Prairie"

Other ideas, "Death to the Prarie", "Not so Pleasant Prarie", "Domination in the Prarie"

Thoughts from the winning team, errrrr, Team hangloose
