Subject: Tan Lines and Wedding Dress: What to do??

I'm getting married in May 2007 and have been wondering what I am going to do with my tan lines... the worst ones come from wearing my bike jersey, bike gloves, and bike shorts. I have dark arms from my mid-upper arm to my wrist and dark knees... everything else is goth chick white.  I haven't done a lot of outdoor swimming yet. I'm just worried that I'm going to look rather strange in my wedding dress... Haven't chosen it yet but I really don't want to have to get something that completely covers me up...

Has anyone dealt with this type of situtation? What did you do?

I'm gonna break tradition here and say:

Who cares? It's YOUR friggin' day. If someone has a problem with it, kick 'em out. Besides, by the next morning, neither you nor anyone else will give a hoot.

Well, is your dress going to be a mini-dress? If not, then don't worry about the shorts. I really don't think that will be an issue.

Don't wear gloves in the spring. You can get used to riding without them.

As for the top, go sleeveless for the spring training and start now if you can. A month or so before the wedding consult a spray-tan place or hit up an electric tan place just a couple of times. (Yes its dangerous but you're only going a couple of times before the wedding) That should even it out tremendously. Then go to spray tan a week or so before. Not the day before!

I got married about two years ago and had this issue too. I have pretty much permanent tan lines from a very severe burn I got about 10 years ago, and did a few tanning bed sessions to try to even things out. I ended up also doing the airbrush tan and it helped, but not totally (see picture). Honestly, though, I didn't care very much. I'm sure if I had planned ahead a little better I could have blended them a little better by using some of the other suggestions you've gotten.

Very nice Kelly

How significant is the tan by that time of year? You're still pretty early season, so you wouldn't be as dark as your are now.

Get a combination of short sleeve and sleeveless shirts, skip the gloves (for at least some of the rides) (Skip the watch/HRM too). Why not try this fall to even out your current tan with the spray-on stuff? You wouldn't want to find out too late (next May) that it doesn't work well for you.

I agree, hell, I find it attractive and a badge of hard work and dedication. But then again, I'm a man and most if not all men would not have a problem with this. My guess is, you might be more concerned with the women. If anyone is crappy enough to judge you because of tan lines, what do you care about their opinions anyway?

Well, since you have so much time to work with, you should be smarter than me. Get thee to a salon and try the airbrush tan or mystic tan and just see how it works for you, if it looks natural, a few months before the ceremony. If it does work, you can just get that done a few days ahead of time. If not, try a tanning bed or the sun. I know, I know, but if there's only one time in your life that you work on a tan, you'll be ok. But, maybe not.

I usually don't worry too terribly much about my looks, plucking my eyebrows is the most above-and-beyond beauty thing I do. When I worried about vanity for my wedding, it was less about what people would think, male or female, and more about a) wanting to feel pretty and b) not wanting to throw up when I looked at the pictures. Mission accomplished, by the way.

I'm usually with the who cares camp for most occasions but it is a wedding and even I tried to get rid of my tan lines for my wedding as well. It is what Kim said, I wanted to look and feel the best I could that day.

Thanks so much! It was the second wedding for both of us, so we just did a small one in our backyard. No need for the big poofy dress, nor is that my taste anyway.

If the big day arrives and you've still got some leftover lines, a good makeup artist can work wonders.

Last big event I went to I wore a dress that was lower in front than I normally wear.  There was a definite "never seen the sun" line on my chest.  A little makeup and powder, and presto-chango, no line.

BTW congratulations, and I second the sentiments about wanting to feel pretty.

Lovely picture, Kelly.

To answer the OP's question. Mystic tan is the only solution I can come up with. Or get one of those Jergen Natural Glow lotion that has a tanner in it to see if it helps.

Makeup can work wonders! My friend just got married and had her makeup airbrushed on...it's supposed to cover up tan lines. I'd look into how effective it is and have a great day!

I went to a tanning booth twice a week for about 3 months before my wedding.  I went so long because I have a tendancy to burn and wanted to do it slow.  That worked really well to even out my tan lines.  I would definitely try to avoid getting them as much as possible - sleeveless jersey and no watch would probably be the biggest ones for me.

I hate tan lines.  I wear sleeveless jerseys, but you still get the lines on your shoulders, and I always have lines on my thighs, which I hate the most.   What I have done before is get a bikini that doesn't have straps, put on 50 spf on the already tanned parts of your body and 15 spf on the not tanned parts and go lay out in the sun a few times a week until you are even.

I've seen people with the mystic tan before and it looks really natural.  There are also a lot of spray on tans you can do yourself with the help of a friend, just make sure you practice it a few months before hand so you get it right.  If you know any bodybuilding or figure competetors they will be able to point you in the right direction of tanning products because they use them for competitions.  You can also ask a trainer at your gym what his competitors use.

That's a great idea! Bay to Breakers is the Day after our wedding! That would be so great for my by-then-husband and I to run it together with our family and friends! We've done Bay to Breakers before so, it will be all that more special. :-) Thanks for reminding me. :-)
