Many more than that get to race as a pro in IM. So are those guys that finish Sub 9 not athletes either, because they aren't at the apex? |

Only a fraction of athletes can hit .300 in the majors, shoot 75% in the NBA, Rush for 2000 yards or more in the NFL, or have a scratch handicap playing from pro tees in golf... But I would say everyone playing professional sports is an athlete. Comparing the elite in professional sports to ALL triathletes is not the same thing. Only the ELITE triathletes can win in Kona or break 9 hours in an IM too. Only ELITE runners can run sub 2:10 marathons. But there are a HELL of a lot of triathletes that are athletes and can do better than most. There are a lot of weekend warriors as well. But there are a lot of weekend warrior baseball, golfers, and basketball players Your not missing anything. You got it. There are also plenty of athletes at all ages and levels who can hit .300 in baseball and shoot 75%. And absolutely, there are some people in triathlon who are athletes. The rest are "weekend warriors" as you say. Just "exercisers" as I say. Certainly no shame in either. Count me as one! HOWEVER....just because you play a sport, or run a triathlon, you are not automatically an athlete. I never hear baseball players or even basketball players reffering to themselves as "athletes". (OK, never is a big word, so rarely).....but I constantly hear people who run triathlons refer to themselves and other participants as "athletes". No, sorry, not by my way of thinking. Maybe for 9 innings.....or until the pitcher gets yanked.....then you're just back to being the duffer you are. You're small window of "athleteness" is gone. Same as winning the local tri put on by the little sisters of the poor.....you podium....you are the champion, now sit down, you big athlete. That brings up another question, though. Are pitchers even athletes since it takes no athletic prowess to throw a ball, similar to the fact that it takes no athletic prowess to run? |
