Member 591 | Subject: RE: Ironman St. George - Utah : Official Thread Lots posted on the course, so I'll keep my two cents shortish and just focus on a couple of key points: The 3-4 hills in the loop are challenging but not crushing. The "big one" is very manageable if ridden smartly. The first half of it will lull you into a false sense of security. Everyone has different strengths, so this is just for me, but I should have gone to a smaller gear sooner on the second half of the climb. I gave up too much momentum shifting too late and paid the price having to muscle up the final pitch from a near stand-still. That said, as badly as I rode the hill from a strategic standpoint, I was quickly recovered once it was done. There are some nice rolling flats after that before the final uphill section on 18 and then the glorious downhill. The Chip Seal and bad road conditions will hurt your speed. You'll look at your computer and think, "I should be going faster." On the occasion where the road does smooth out, you'll see your speed spike up considerably. My mantra will simply be to take what the course gives me. Average speeds will be slower on most of the loop, but you'll make it up on the downhills and I think overall, average speeds on the bike will be pretty good. The run will be a challenge, no doubt, with some climbing out of T2 that will take the spring out of my legs. But, what goes up will come down, and aside from a few steeper pitches, the downhill on diagonal is very manageable and shouldn't cause too much pain in the thighs and knees. You're HR should recover nicely on the return trips and regardless of how the rest of the run goes, I'd suspect many will cross the line running and smiling because of the nature of the downhill return. |

Champion 5781 Northridge, California | Subject: RE: Ironman St. George - Utah : Official Thread Out of town at an event all weekend. Managed to get in one hour plus on hotel spin bike Saturday and a planned 10 mile moderate-to-hard effort run (one mile laps around the property) on Sunday. Pool was fairly empty during some downtime Sunday PM, so blew off a planned nap and knocked out a quick 10 minutes worth of laps to get in a few extra yards after only swimming once earlier in the week, then climbed into the spa for a soak. |

Elite 3602 Mesa, AZ | Subject: RE: Ironman St. George - Utah : Official Thread VegasJason - 2010-02-14 3:48 PMSo got a chance to visit the course again yesterday (3rd visit). The area and course is beautiful and as we all know challenging. The weather was great and air clear. Couple of things to keep in mind for those who aren't as lucky to be so close...1) They are on Mountain time, which I had forgotten about having come from Las Vegas.2) There is some altitude there so if you are coming from flat lands you might notice a difference in your breathing.3) A lot of the road is chip seal or poorly paved. This will slow down your normal speed vs effort. The exception is on 18 (almost all downhill) which is freshly paved. Anyone have any thoughts about tire pressure and how it might help or hinder a ride on chip seal?4) This is a hilly course for both the run and bike. Which to me means that we will need to work on both uphill and downhill training. I really think that there is a huge advantage on the downhill parts of the bike course, but I also think that those who are comfortable riding it without the brakes will gain the most.5) We saw tons of runners and bike riders through out the day. The local community is very active and I hope this translates to some big turn outs for crowd support.Should be a great day with lots of self growth, cant wait!! COOL! What kind of gearing are you running? |

Hmm...so far I've been planning on running the spec 53/39 and 12-25 on my Kestrel (which I've been training on)...but this statement gives me pause. |

Hmm...so far I've been planning on running the spec 53/39 and 12-25 on my Kestrel (which I've been training on)...but this statement gives me pause. I wouldn't pause too much. I'm far from a strong climber, and I'm content with my 12-25. It's also a tricky course in that (again, just for me), most of the loop was spent in my small ring, so I think I'd rather have run the 12-25 than a 12-27, as you have more options in the middle of the cassette to work with as you're dealing with the smaller rollers and rough road. This will be my first IM, so I'm admittedly guessing a bit at the whole pacing issue, and VegasJason is right, there were a few times I wish I had a 12-27. But, if memory serves, out of the 2+ hours spent in the loop, there was probably 20 minutes at most where you are climbing a "hill" and only about 5 to 10 where you are seriously challenged by a hill. Not sure it makes sense to change out a cassette or a crank set for just a few steep pitches. If you are running an 11-23, the I'd definitely go 12-25, but if you're 12-25 and at least an average climber, you should be fine. |

Extreme Veteran 492 Austin, TX | Subject: RE: Ironman St. George - Utah : Official Thread Minor changes to the bike course. Looks like they added part of a bike path. It's a no pass zone but it's only 2/3 of a mile long so not a big deal in the entire 112 mile picture. http://www.ironmanstgeorge.com/bike.html |

Regular 100 Allen, TX ( Basically North of Dallas) | Subject: RE: Ironman St. George - Utah : Official Thread Just a few questions for everyone. When are you getting to St. George? Wednesday for me!! Fly into Vegas around 10:30am then driving up to St. George. Where are you staying? I am staying at the Chalet Motel. It seemed near the course and had a kitchenette so I can do some of my own cooking!!! How many IM races have you done? This will be my 4th ( FL, AZ, LP) Is your training on Pace with what you planned? I am close. I would like to be a little lighter by now but I am doing what I need to do. |

Master 1359 South of SLC | Subject: RE: Ironman St. George - Utah : Official Thread When are you getting to St. George? I am headed down on Wednesday. I live south of Salt Lake City, so it is less than a 5 hour drive for me. Where are you staying? I am at one of the Marriott's in town. The Courtyard is a nice property and has a pool for the family. How many IM races have you done? This is my first. I have done several 1/2 IM distance races. Is your training on Pace with what you planned? I think so. I finally got to ride outside yesterday and felt pretty speedy. I need to increase my swim distances, but I don't want to substitute swims for bikes or runs at this point. I am hovering between 800 - 850 TSS per week for those who train with a power meter. Mike |

Member 101 Lost Wages Nevada | Subject: RE: Ironman St. George - Utah : Official Thread I agree with SAquavia, the gearing is probably fine if your at least an average climber. I just hate hitting the top 1/2 of a hill and realizing I have no bail out gears left available. That said I wasn't about to be unable to finish the hills it was just a preference with me. (I will be riding my 12-25 on race day) I plan to arrive on Thursday (live in Vegas so travel is easy) and am staying at the Country Inns and Suits. If any are interested I would be up for getting a glass of water and a protein bar on Thursday night |

Four of us from Houston doing the race rented a house downtown. How many IM races have you done? 0 - none - ziltch - will be my first! Is your training on Pace with what you planned? I think so, but of course worried it is not enough - trying to balance enough rest and enough training! I think if i can keep the volume up through february and mid-March I will be good to go. Champion 5781 Northridge, California | Subject: RE: Ironman St. George - Utah : Official Thread When are you getting to St. George? Sometime late Wednesday afternoon. Driving from LA. Where are you staying? Dixie Palms...we're on a tight budget. How many IM races have you done? This is #2 (Full Vineman). (Hopefully will be my first uninjured...) Is your training on Pace with what you planned? Pretty much so...surprisingly, since I was on the shelf with two injuries all of December. Next three weekends are key for me: First two 100+ mile rides this year and 2nd 20 mile run. I'm basically ready now on the swim and run--focus the next two months is on finishing LA Marathon prep and final phase of bike training. My weight is still plateaued about 3 lbs higher than I'd like it to be for the marathon on March 21, so I'm starting to think about that as well. Edited by tcovert 2010-02-17 10:38 AM |

I plan to stay at the Best Western I always stay at when racing up there. I know were all the good places are to eat around town and that area. I seriously plan to probably make the drive the day before the race (from Vegas). Then leave the next morning, or if my wife can come, have her drive me home that night to sleep in my own bed. BTW, this is my second IM. So far the training is going GREAT. It actually seems easy so far, and I'm following a more aggressive plan than I did for my first. Edited by Kido 2010-02-17 10:47 AM |

The weather, money, and illness have all played a role in screwing workouts up. At least I am injury free and for the most part, besides the regular head colds I get this time of year, healthy. My weight has stopped dropping, but my body fat keeps falling. The only thing that worries me is my biking. We have had some realy bad weather this winter and my trainer is broken. So I have had to miss some rides, or cut them short do to lack of day light. |
