Hello Wasabi and Friends,

I don't think you should feel bad about your comments. If we shell out our $600/head, they should have a contingency plan. I am a Race Director. I would be looking for an alternate. Turns out there is another lake called Saguaro Lake, which looks very nice and is right off of the Ironman Arizona Bike Course. I contacted the IM AZ race staff to consider choosing this as an alternate swim location. This would require the use of two separate transition areas, but would allow for the bike course and run courses and such to be unchanged for the most part. Even if Tempe Town Lake is ready by November, it would be good of the staff to plan an alternate site. The HyVee Triathlon had a similar issue last year and they pulled an alternate site off within 1 week! That race has just as many people in it as an Ironman. To be honest, I think I would rather swim in a real lake instead of TTL.

My 2 Cents,

Bill in Minnesota

Ok, so I am a bit more concerned than I was an hour ago, but I think this could just be posturing.  I am not panicking yet.  I will wait a couple of more weeks for that.

On a lighter note (or not), how's everyone's training going?  I had a minor bike crash on Friday and getting my bike out of the shop today.  Better now, than 10 weeks from now.

Sorry to hear about your crash. And you're right; it's better now, with 16.5 weeks to go.

Back to the damn dam. My friend Todd spoke with the mayor of Tempe:

I've had a chance to talk to Hugh Hallman and come hell or high water they will be ready for IMAZ. I'm guessing that they will start to fill the lake sometime in Mid October and have at least 4 weeks to stabilize the water quality. Even if they have to build a temporary dam structure until the foam dams are installed I believe it will be done. The sad thing is that the lake will probably be full for SOMA but will not be usable for humans at that point.

Also, the delay doesn't really put anything behind schedule because the 4th part of te dam system won't be on site until Sept anyway.

On a related note...the Volunteer page for IMAZ is now open.  If you're not racing (but want priority registration for 2011) you can sign up to volunteer at the race.

I'm already signed up to be a Bike Handler.

That was my first choice but they said it filled up instantly.  Curiously there are lots of openings for Men's Change Tent.

So, that was YOU!!  No really, there was a perv on a cell phone just outside the exit of the tent, looking back into the tent.  He was either waiting for his wife, girlfriend, or giving details on the white butts and boobs that were in there. . I was so cold and my brain moving so slow, that I forgot to ask him is he got a good look at my dolphin tatt on my left boob...  He had on sunglasses so I figured the light reflecting off my white butt was blinding him...

Well, we women do know what cold can do to the male anatomy, so it wouldn't really make for an eventful day....  Lori

For those who have done IMAZ in the past - are Special Needs Bags returned? The posts on the main BT.Com IM page regarding what to put in them and whether or not they will be returned post race has gotten me thinking...

I picked up my special needs the morning after the race.  They just throw all the bags in bins (in no particular order) and you have to dig through them. I wouldn't recommend putting anything very valuable in them just in case

So I was snooping around the IMFL thread and it looks like they are formulating a plan to create BT hats and/or shirts for their race for both racers and spectators.  Do we want to see if we can join in on their order to get a better volume discount?  Is this something people are interested in?  I don't think they are have specific IMFL logos on their apparel.

I'm new to BT and am registered for IM AZ (my first IM distance).  Good to find this community!  Now just need to figure out how to upload profile pic.  Having trouble with that.
