Thats why I used it for a name, my wife got me the jersey for my birthday and I get more compliments on that jersey then anything else.  The beer is also delicious, at least for those "who are sick of yellow fizzy water".  Looking forward to next year.

O2BFast - 2010-10-26 8:10 PM For anyone looking for accommodations, I was surprised when I called the Crowne Plaza and they told me - "sure we have rooms for that weekend". Right in the action. A bit more than I wanted to spend, but if someone's looking, you might want to call them. Had to put down a 1 night deposit pre-paid.

That is the route I went also.  I got tired of calling around and asking about condos and etc.  Called the Crowne Plaza and got a room.  Talked to a family at Kona that goes to Placid every year and they said it is in a very good location.

Hey guys! Finished my first marathon on the 17th...and I guess I took a week off?

Awesome!  Congrats on your first Marathon.  4:26 is a SOLID first marathon time.  The mental toughness you you endured over the final 10k of your marathon will surely pay off at LP.

Thanks! (and thanks to Ryan too!) The more time that passes since the 17th the more satisfied with the time I am. Oh perspective.

1.  This will be my sixth IM, and my fifth finish (St. George kicked my butt this year, but I'll beat it in 2012!).  I did my first triathlon in 2008 and my first IM in 2009.
2.  First time for LP.
3.  My goal for the 2011 race is to finish sub-14.
4.  I selected LP because it was next on the list and fit well with doing FL the same year.
5.  No specific questions - I have a friend who has done it before who is filling me in on what to expect.

I've heard this race is a good mixture, so you have to be well-rounded to perform well.

Here's a question...

For your first Ironman, would you recommend adding races leading up to the event - 10Ks, 10milers, half marathons, etc to make the weekend runs more interesting.... duathlons, sprint tris, tris, open water swim races etc...

Or would you think that it is better to avoid racing and just concentrate on doing on half and maybe an olympic leading up to the event?

mrbbrad (and anybody else that is interested) we have a king room reserved at the Crown Plaza, and due to miscommunication with my wife, we also have a suite at the Mirror Lake Inn. We are keeping the suite at MLI, and will be canceling the Crown Plaza at some point. We will be losing one nights deposit, but would be happy to try to transfer it over to someone on BT if anyone is interested. We have it booked from Thursday 21st through Tuesday 26th. It is $349.00 per night for 5 nights, but you would essentially be getting one night free as we have already paid that. Feel free to PM if interested.

x2 with DC, mndymond - that is a rock solid first Marathon - congratulations! Every time I run a marathon it takes me a lot longer than a week to get back on the horse again. If you are already back at it, then that just shows how tough and mentally focused you are - fantastic!

Hey RJohnson1979 - I just had this discussion with my coach today. We worked through a schedule of races for the upcoming season. While I have not done an IM yet, I have raced my fair share of halfs, and I have always found that it is easier for me to stay sharp by training through a number of races and even racing a few prior. I think (and coach agrees) that this is especially important in IM training.

I am running a 200 mile team relay this weekend for fun and a 10k on thanksgiving (not really racing either one) and then have a half marathon in mid-March (Georgia), a half iron distance in mid May (Knoxville Rev 3) and then IMLP in July. The plan is to aim at and race all three of these, and train through maybe 2 other sprint/olympic tris. We will see about that as the season rolls around. Everybody is different, but for me I probably would not be able to maintain my focus on a single race so far away on the schedule, even if it is Lake Placid!

Oh - and good luck at IMFL this coming weekend, KathyG - thanks for the advice re: coaching - I am loving it!

what are your goals?

It all depends on that.  If you just want to finish and have fun, then I wouldn't not do the local races you typically do, however, *IMO*, any running race over a half marry has too much recovery cost.

If you want to do as best as you possibly can, then it could make sense to scratch off a lot of those local races as they eat up your weekends, which for most are the key days for IM training.

Last year I did several sprints/olympics, which I probably will not do this year as they ate up big weekends. Plus an olympic event take me longer to recover from then a 4-5 hour steady ride......

just some thoughts!

RJohnson1979 ... I would take whatever this Cusetri-guy says with a huge grain of salt.  I mean, LP was only his first Ironman and he barely finished with a 10:36.     I kid of course.  This is rock solid advice from somebody who aced this course first time out.

From seeing what other succesful BT'ers have done, it seems one HIM about two months out seems like a good move.  I think you should do at least one race prior to practice transitions and to be mentally reminded of Race Day discomfort.  I think if you have the opportunity, defintely without a doubt spend a training weekend up there in May or June.  Training on the actual course will greatly improve your chances of success on Race Day.

Basically same thoughts as Cuse and Dreamchaser here.  Will definitely do a HIM as part of the lead up.  Other short races only if convenient and early but most likely not.  Definitely no full marathon.  I may look for a half mary in February some time...not positive yet.

Met with my coach last week and we have broken my season up into 3 pieces:
- January 1 to May 1
- May 1 to Lake Placid
- Post Lake Placid

From January 1 to May 1 I can do whatever running races I want that are a half marathon or less and any triathlon of Half Ironman distance or less. I am about to sign up for Lonestar (the name has now changed) on April 10th as an early spring getaway vacation/fun race.

From May 1 to Lake Placid is 12 weeks, which is my Ironman specific training block...aka serious time. If I do any tri's during this time, it will be Sprints or Olympics only with more to do afterwards so as to not blow an entire week or two on one HIM race through taper, race, and recovery. 5 weeks out from Placid is my training camp with my coach up @ Placid.

So overall it is looking like much less racing compared to 2010, but I am OK with that. I want to show up to Placid fresh and not mentally burned out from too much racing on the brain.

Hey TankBoy, I stayed at Mirror Lake Inn last year, nice place, you can do your practice swim right from their beach and join the swim course at the North end. Don't make the mistake I did last year, They do not allow bikes in your room. They have a conference room for bike and keep it locked up. I missed the no bike in room rule and was almost charged a $300.00 fee until my wife talked them out of it. Good luck in training.

I'm doing Rev 3 Quassy.

It was a hard choice between that and Mooseman 70.3, decided to go with the Rev3 event due to all the good comments I've heard about them.

I would suggest something in late May or early June:  Rev3 Quassy or Harriman Endrurasport (the Harryman).  Both are swim lakes and hilly bikes and runs.  Both Half's are actually tougher Bike and Runs then Lake Placid based on elevation gain/loss; but obviously not distance.  However, the similar terrain will allow you to practice nutrition and pacing.   Lots of people do pancake flat Eagleman, and have great races at LP, but Eagleman is sold out.

Depends on where you live. I am guessing you are in the New York area if you didn't specify. There aren't many options for me in Michigan during the time from late May to early June. But I am doing a HIM in early June. Don't know how good it will be because it is the first year of the race. But it probably won't get me ready for the challenge of LP, kind of hard to replicate that in Southern Michigan.

There is the Racing for Recovery half in Monroe for the other Michiganders here.  I'm not sure if I'm going to sign up.  The bike course is less than two miles from my house, but I might just use the time to train instead of 2 weeks for taper/recovery.

I'm two weeks down in Jorge's winter cycling program.  I have to say that the trainer sessions kick my mentally and physically but my body rises to the occasion well.  I'm actually really enjoying them.  I also ran for the first time today since my Oct 27th marathon.  I'm ready to get back out there.

Anyone ever heard of / done the Kinetic Half IM in Virginia? That's the only one I'm planning on doing... they haven't announced the date yet but will probably be late april / early may.

In other news... just finished the Richmond Marathon yesterday... my first one! I had no idea what time to expect but knew I wanted to just run the whole thing at a comfortable pace. Result - 4:16:20. Weee! And now I feel crazy for having singed up for a full IM before doing a full marathon... I have to say, the hype about the difficulty of a marathon is not overrated... but I put the training time in so it was an awesome experience.. And it seriously has gotton me even more pumped up for IMLP!

I guess it's the "off season" now for me... Hope everyone is having an awesome fall!
