Well my sprint for this weekend is cancelled. Terrorism wins this one Cry

Oh no! What happened/who got afraid?

JAY BENSON CANCELLED

Regrettably, due to the Boston Marathon incident and the resulting heightened security at Kirtland AFB, last minute security requirements for civilian entry to the Base have left us no alternative but to cancel the Jay Benson Triathlon.

Big bummer  but understandable.  Maybe you and the chillen can do some other active, fun Mother's Day activity together instead?

I would have had an issue with this until I saw that it was on an AFB. I hate to say it, but I gotta agree. I'm sorry TJ, were you doing this one with DS1?

I don't disagree with the decision but it makes me sad. This is one of my faves because it's on the base the run and ride are closed to traffic, part of the ride is along the airport runway (super cool), and it's a serpantine swim in a 50m pool. I also like it because it's Mothers Day so DH and the kid(s) come to spectate then we go do Mother's Day-ish things.

No... DS1 isn't doing tri's... yet.

Agreed. OK, so is the other son, ah man, I can't keep this straight. Which one is Yanti stalking?

I think you are referring to DS2. Do you need a play bill? (I was going to say "dance card," but that didn't seem quite right.)

Yeah, I'm contemplating other options. Hafta talk with DH and DS1 tonight.

I noticed that there have been a lot of recent wetsuit purchases in the pod.  I think that it's important to have some background on how wetsuits work.  Sure they add buoyancy and that's handy (especially for certain adult onset swimmers) and the keep you warm but how exactly?

Wetsuits works by keeping an insulating layer of water next to your skin. So wetsuit has to first get wet and you have to warm up the water before it protects you from the cold water.

So, while they do keep you warm, you do still have that initial shock. It also means that if you have a chance to do a warm up swim, that it really helps to fully submerge and dooo eeet!

Thanks, Janyne. I did some more poking around, and I found an OWS clinic about 70 miles from here this Saturday afternoon. I am seriously considering it even though I'll probably spend about three times as long in the car as in the water. lol

Or you could do the Yanti thing and make your sherpa bring a thermos of warm water just to pour into your wetsuit. This is in addition to the thermos with hot chocolate, the bottle with cool water, the 2nd-breakfast, the pre-race snack, the post-race backpack, the ... well, you get the idea.

Or I guess, pee in it (the suit). I am not doing that. Just saying. Not gonna happen.

And remember having a strong engine (you!) is more important than what you ride.  Admittedly, the bike does make some difference but rider power/ability totally trumps bike unless bike is 50 lbs. .  I'm still working to get myself to the point of being worthy of Rico.

Yep.  Still trying to get the positioning dialed in 100% so I don't get chafed.  The ISM cured a lot of my, uh, as TJ put it 'nether region' woes but I still get not-nice chafing where leg meets softer bits.  In a way, I'll take that over the other issues I was having with my other seat! Surprised  But pain-free would be most preferable!

Heh. I thought you might like those. I have 4 pair runnies in Jakarta too and not ashamed to admit I have 1 pair aquajogging shoes in each place.

My other shoe rack is for thongs although a pair did escape to try and fraternize with the runnies.

Open-Water Swimming (OWS): MAPS to Get Ready

Hey! I knew swimming with my six year old on Sunday afternoons was good for something.

"Bring friends or family members or children.
This can be during open pool time or if you can get a free lane during lap swimming). Take a couple strokes and as you turn for a breath, have someone do a big splash of water in your face. Try to do this so you are taking a number of strokes and don't know on which breath someone will send a big splash or wave your way." . . . or cannon ball you . . . or pull your leg . . . or jump on your back . . . or throw a ball at you and hit you in the head . . .
