I'm far from an IM expert but everything Rusty says makes so much sense to me.  Without a doubt, the single biggest mistake i made in my IM training was low frequency running.  Essentially I only ran 3x/week on average.  I knew it was wrong but I stuck to the plan...   I think simply running 5-6 days/week and doing everything else the same would have saved me a lot of walking on race day.

Like Rusty, I'm stoked for you Jason.  The energy and atmosphere around that race in the week leading up to it is incredible.

Dang - Sally is killing it on her rusty old steel bike! She already has 10 QOMs - and this in the land where they take being a queen somewhat seriously. Nice!

Blah, no split times in Kim's race today.  She's out of the water at least, and I assume on the bike cause she has a T1 time.

Well, I'm done. I've had a shower and put on the zoots. Dinner is next. I was slower than I'd anticipated/hoped but no complaints. I finished, didn't have a panic attack in the swim scrum, and did my best to thank every volunteer. Lots to learn from and do differently but race report will be later. Hotel Internet is slower than my run split.

thanks for all the advice. I leaned on that a good bit during the day.

Whoo-hoo, Kim - way to get it done! Kick your feet up and enjoy dinner - you deserve it - can't wait to read all about it - and no sparing the details.

I got in a nice 11.5 mile run and a 1k OWS.  Wasn't meaning to run that far...more like 8-10, but sort of forgot how much distance this loop I did in the middle would add.  Kept it stupid easy throughout so no big deal.

Going to do a 85ish mile group ride tomorrow which should be fun.  Bike racing season is kicking up, so I'm just tagging along with the roadies so I don't have to ride on my own.

I also signed up for the Waikiki Rough Water Swim on Labor Day.  Haven't done it before, but figured now's a better time than any.  I've already done the Honolulu Marathon 3x and the Oahu Perimeter Bike (now called Dick Evans) 2x, so this is the only missing leg of the original IM that I haven't done yet.  The course is largely impacted by tides and currents, and this year is supposed to be a fast year because of the rising tide about 30 minutes after the race starts.

Rusty, thanks for all of that.  I really like all of your ideas.

At this point though, I really haven't decided on a lot of details...especially when it comes to long bricks.  My focus now is to just ease my way back into training and not to go overboard with anything just yet.  My #1 goal is to have fun with this, and I'm not sure how my body is going to respond to the increased training load.

I really like your idea about capping long runs at 2.5 hours.  My mind tells me that's not long enough (having trained for 3 stand alone marathons in the past), but I also have to accept that a stand alone marathon is very different from an IM marathon.  The recovery costs just seem too high for 3+ hour runs for someone like me.

Had a thought before, since you have power, how much were you going to rely on that for something like TSS to help quantify the bike volume. I know you gave the overall strategy and 3x a week somewhere, but was curious about that part. Not sure I know what would be *right* to do as my response is most always to do more biking. Tongue out

Today's ride. 90 miles, 225 NP (goal was 220-225). Higher than IM effort would be. Simulated IM course with a climb, 30 miles of flat, then a bigger climb. Mapmyride had it at. 5600, but garmin showin 7k. Haven't done this second climb in several years. It's relentless and the pavement is horrible, which seems to make it even more difficult. Good day out there. Ride with a guy I met on the la tri clubs Facebook page training for LP. Glad not to have to be out there all aloneHopefully the pic posts

You rode your bike around l'arc de triomphe ? Are YOU NUTS :-) !!!!! You are a brave woman !

If in the neighborhood, goto St-Germain des Pres and sit at les Deux Magots and people watch :-)
Lots of very famous people used to hang out there.

So I thought to myself as we got ready to move, my runs will be much easier now since I am dropping a couple of thousand feet in elevation.  Then I went for a run....  I am either going up or down.  Never flat.  I thought Payson was hilly.  Oh well, keep the calves happy with the foam roller.

I'm in !

PS : Fred, I am really happy to see you will be at the starting line
PPS : I am really nervous about this race.

I posted an OWS on Strava yesterday. About equal distance North, slightly West of Tremblant and in waters of similar temperature. It was fine.

The off-season is the best time to fine tune your skills and prepare yourself for the next season. It is also time for you to gain some strength and get a little rest after a long season of training.

If you develop a strategy for the off-season, you can go into the next season stronger than you ended the past season.
