Me: dang they are talking sub 50 degree water at cda right now!

Runnergirl (who did it last year): YIKES! Now THAT is cold. Hopefully it will warm up quite a bit since you still have some time left before the race. Last year it was around 60-61 ish on race day and warmed up quite a bit about 1-2 weeks before the race.

There's still plenty of time for the water to warm up people

It's in the high 60s and 70s this week in the NW and sunny so that should help. Hopefully we'll see a week or 2 in the 80s and 90s and then we should be set.

Until we get race #s I think all stress over water temp should cease

for those not racing my 0.02 on places to stay.  Last year I was a volunteer and stayed at Farragut state park for $15 a night.  I had a hot shower every morning and felt like I had a great camping experience.  packed in one check in bag and a carry on - a one man tent, sleeping bag, camp pad, and all my gear to rent a bike from the two wheeler dealer in hayden for $50 dollars a day.  Had good weather which helped.  Was an awesome trip for less than 600 round trip.  It ended up being a payback as I met a friend at my aide station that I will be staying with for free the week of the race this year.  Bottom line is Farragut State Park is an awesome place to stay for 15 a night and a 30 minute commute to the race!!!!

One last question - those of you using INFINIT on the bike - do you make up two 3 hour bottles or have some at special needs?

Thanks all!  We GOT THIS!

Last year I had 2 3x bottles with me on the bike, plus 1 for strict water. I think this year I plan to have just two bottles on the bike, one for water and 1 3hr bottle. The other 3hr bottle will be in special needs. I did not stop at special needs last year, but I think I will plan for the pitstop this time around. 1-2 minutes of special needs is not gonna kill you, plus I guarantee you will welcome a nice leg stretch break.

I am rocking a 5 er... 6 ummm...7 hour bottle...seriously a 20 oz bottle with about 1600 calories.  Plus a double aero with about 600 more.

Yes air temp is rising, but h2o temp has been falling. Check it out: http://waterdata.usgs.gov/id/nwis/uv/?site_no=12417610&PARAmeter_cd...

I think that wather tem is falling because we still have a ton of snow to meld in the mountains. I'm getting in the lake next tuesday, I will give an update.

45ish degrees. BRRR is right. My teeth hurt already just thinking about putting my face in that water. Come on snow get to melting up high. The rivers and lakes around the area are starting to flood pretty good so mabey the snow pack up high is going fast.

So there is a 150 mile bike tour I am thinking about signing up for on June 4th. Too much? It seems to be fairly flat according to the web site. Just think it would be a fun way to get some mileage. Thoughts?

Looking at your log, it looks like your trained for it and it would be a great way to finish off before your taper. If you can get your runs in around it, I'd go for it.

I would do it!  You're fit, ready for it and it will be fun.  Why not?  Just looked at your logs and noticed that 1) you will be fine because you've been training a lot and 2) you're a survivor.  Congratulations!  F cancer!!!  Super proud of you!

So let's talk about this cold water. 45-50F scares the crap out of these two Floridians.  We have some natural springs here in FL that stay at 69F all year round.  And those were COLD!

So what can you do to stay warm in temps like that?  Wear long tightts and sleeves under your wet suit?  Vasaline on your skin?  Anyone ever consider putting a couple of those chemical heat packs inside the suit?

Seriously, at this point we're more scared of the water temp than the bike or the run.  We just have no point of reference for 50 degree water...

I'm in Ga and I have the same fears of the cold water. I swam in mid 50s and the first time froze my face and brain and I wanted to stop at 25 and 100 yards but made it through 1000. The next time at the same temp we went a bit farther and it bothered me a bit less. Here is what Runnergirl wrote to me and I may have posted ages ago:

"Swim- so much contact, worse IM swim I've ever done as far as violence goes. I did IM FL in 2006 and the CDA swim was much worse than FL's swim. Not sure what to tell you about this besides be prepared for contact during the entire swim- it never really thinned out the 2nd lap like it did at IM FL. Also- I wore 2 swim caps since the water temp was around 61 degrees that morning and had a full wetsuit. It was cold but I honestly didn't notice the water temp at all because of the adrenaline and all the contact. I was surprised that the cold water didn't bother me at all."

I think she was the one who mentined the thin layer of vaseline on the face to me. I also think you can get a pair of the blue seventy neoprene booties if its that cold. Not sure you have to worry so much about what is beneath the wetsuit. Its the skin that is exposed that is worse off.

on the 150 mile ride, Achen2iron, I would say go for it too. My build for Florida included a 127 miler and this build I had a 131 miler. I credit those two rides with giving me some of the biggest confidence boosts as regards the bike for race day. Just be smart with pacing and breaks if you need them. You don't want too much fatigue or burnout to develop that late in the game.

And Nerdjock is absolutely right, F cancer!

Everyone says the water will warm up ....   I am heading to CDA this weekend and next weekend...and it's supposed to be warmer.  YEAH finally more than 1 day of sun in the PNW!! What a crappy sprinter...

Did my first open water swim of the year yesterday in 57 degrees - give or take...it was tolerable, but I did get an ice cream headache for a little bit.

FULL wetsuit....booties, gloves, heavy swim cap, neoprine cap and latex cap... - we stayed in the water about 25 minutes.  My layers of caps kept my hair completely DRY...that prob helped keep me from freezing.

This was posted by a tri team in my area...pretty interesting....

As for the water temp, eh.  It's going to be really cold regardless so no need to spend time on that for me.

remember it's a wetsuit not a drysuit... it works by allowing a thin layer of water inside the suit and then your body heat warms that water up.  The more space between the suit and you, the more water your body will need to be warming, and the LESS warm the suit will be.  Adding layers under your suit will not only do nothing, it will actually hurt you in terms of your fear of cold.

As pointed out, it's the exposed parts that will feel it the worst.  Vaseline on the face, larger goggles (mask style instead of sweedish style), neoprene cap, booties, etc... that's what will help you.  You cannot wear gloves, as there would be a propulsion benefit (unless you had a condition like raynaud's disease and got permission from WTC, I suspect).

I also agree a few practice swims will help tremendously.  You do not want to plunge into high-50 degree water for the first time on race day.

Wait, wait, you can appeal things like that if you have medical reasons?  I may need to look into that as I've been suspicious that I have Raynauds for quite some time...

Proper wetsuit fit like Josh said, makes a big difference.  I raced it last year and the water was 60, and I did it without a neoprene cap.  The start was terrible for about 400 yards, then I got into a groove and felt good with the sun coming up.  By the end of the swim I was getting really cold just from time in the water.

I'll be wearing a neoprene cap this year.  You lose a ridiculous amount of heat through your head, so this makes a big difference.  Plus it covers your ears which I consider a side benefit.

As far as water temp im expecting 60 and hope for the best. Ive watched the usgs water temp site and the temp has been going up although slowly. One day it jumped 4 degrees so alot can change. The warmer weather we are finaly getting (mid-70s in CdA) could very well be melting the snow causing the temp to come down a bit. In the Seattle area I looked and Magnuson Beach was at 52 but Green Lake is 57 so theres differences even locally.

I looked at the IMTX forum and saw the water temp was 80!! That would concern me as well if wetsuits were not allowed. Im not a strong swimmer so I rely on the suit. Its my neoprene security blanket. Funny how different races have different concerns. We are worried about 60 degree water and IM TX is worried about 90degree+ temps.

3.5 weeks of long workouts and then time to let the body regenerate itself during the taper.

Will be in CdA over Memorial Weekend to run and ride. I will LOOK at the lake but really dont think I will jump in but will take my gear in case. Maybe for a quick dip  ;-)

Does anyone know traditionally what the water temp is this time of year??  Unless it is way colder than normal for May 19th we may be getting a little paranoid on water temp.......  Last year was 60 degrees and honestly for me within 500 meters I didn't notice the cold.  What I am way more worried about is temps in the 80s-90s, that will kill my bike and run, my body does not work well in the heat.....

Just my 2-cents -- I'm riding a Century on Sat. 21st and practicing all my nutrition, pacing, etc. with limited stops, but it's nice to know they are there if you need them. I concur if you're trained, which apparently you are, and you know how hard to push or not, then you can use it to your advantage and then glide right into your taper. So glad you're a survivor.

An interesting question and one I guess I don't have a clear cut answer for.

My plan has three and a half weeks of training left and includes several "Long" workouts where I am combining Swim/Bike/Run for longer periods of time. I did ~6.5 hours last week, I have something close to an 8 hour workout planned for Saturday which includes the San Diego Century. (Swim before and brick run after

I think the real answer for me is to just nail all of my planned workouts with the proper intensity over the rest of the time I have left before Taper Time.

Water Temps: I am not the least bit concerned. The lake in CdA is already above my threshold so unless they get an unexpected snowfall in the next few weeks; it is all good.

In 2008 it warmed up to a balmy 60 degrees on race day. (Up from 52 @ Thursday's Practice Swim

Awesome; thanks for getting out there and Volunteering. Are you going to sign up for next year? (I think Vollies get priority in line on Monday Morning

I know you guys will take care of my Friend John out there. He is doing IMTX as his first Ironman. He is an awesome marathoner and he may be last on the bike, but he sure is going to run everyone down in the last 26.2 miles.
