I'll post more details once I get details on the splits.  The bike and run were ok.  My T1 was awful.  And I freaked on the swim.  What should have taken me 6 minutes or less took me 8.  But it's all good!  I did get an extra boost from my neon yellow shoelaces.

Congratulations!  I look forward to hearing more about it :-)

Ha ha ha ha ha, that pretty much described my trail running today, too, both the time and the running(ish)!  A few of those dang hills just slayed me in the heat.

Trails are great, no?

TJ, Tom, Yanti and Brie - sounds like you had good races, nice job!  And yes, Brie, Felicia is right - we need pics of the jacket!

Janyne - nice job to you as well, I just read your RR.

What distance was this?

Tri's get so confusing with all of their different distances.

This kind of brings up a question I've had about others here in logging their bike workouts. And that is with how effort is being determined? I've looked at a number of them and mostly see time and/or distance put in, but not much in the way of how hard the ride was. Certainly not expecting anything with the detail that I may put in, but didn't really see much that was recognizable. Like RPE or HR (or sprint effort, Oly effort, etc), or that many were pushing too much at all. Running is fairly simple with mostly easy (being *about* the same effort) and sometimes hard (which was written in when done). Swimming is sorta simple there too as for most anyone here it'll be safe to assume the main sets are hard or moderately hard. But the bike can vary quite a bit more. Swimming and running can also trace volume down to duration fairly well with fairly steady speed or pacing, but that doesn't work as well with the bike for a few reasons. And if you can't tell, the bike is definitely my favorite of the three. Smile

I was thinking about this on my last ride. For me, the problem is that I go completely by RPE, and I think most of us (read: I) overestimate how hard we are working. My rides feel hard, and I believe some of them are, especially with the wind we've been having. But I don't have an objective metric. I can calculate the mph after I get home, but even that doesn't really describe how hard (or not) I was working because of other factors (wind, terrain, road conditions). I am considering that maybe I need a power meter because the power output (if I understand it correctly) would be the clearest indicator of how hard I am actually working. But even as I type that, I am cringing. I don't really want a power meter. Maybe I'm afraid of what it will tell me about my output. Undecided

X2. I have a "Suckage Scale" to kind of keep track of the amount of effort, RPE if you will. I am getting better at judging how strong the effort has been, and I am now adding in intervals, sprints, etc. I have just started in the past few weeks to try to quantify what is going on while biking, probably the result of the Strava app. In the past it has just been "get on and ride", but now I have some comparisons that I can do, both with myself and with others.  As well, I am not much of an equipment person, I run with an old Timex Ironman watch and bike with a Cateye, so a HRM or PT would be a HUGE step for me, and I'm not sure I am ready to, or want to go there.

BTW, Felicia, some of the winds you ride in make me cringe.

Do know that while power is the superior method in theory, a good number do just fine (and maybe even better) with HR. It doesn't have the same capability, but can be enough for a lot of people. It is simpler to use and noticeably more cheap. Then also remember that people were able to figure out how to go under 50 minutes for 40k (the length of an Olympic bike segment) on a road bike with only a timer. It's really more figuring out what system fits best to you and learning how to utilize what capabilities it has. I've always been looking into math & science for as long as I can remember, in engineering now. So having and understanding data like this tends to come more easily. More info has been better. I don't think one has to totally be into the numbers to be helpful, that's just where I'm coming from in my decision.

One doesn't have to use all the info available for either, but it would be good to make sure you're going to utilize at least some part of it beyond simply reporting a number and thinking it's cool.

Should be interesting to see how things go. Do remember that the biggest thing is to keep getting out there and doing anything!

I'm already thinking of marathon training and have been mulling over a lot of stuff.

I was going to write a really lengthy post in TT asking about different kinds of long runs and the specific training stimulus they have and which "type" of run would be better (I was weighing the structure of a weekend doing a long tempo/flo workout on Saturday followed by a true long run on Sunday VS putting in some solid miles and THEN doing the long tempo/flo on Saturday, making that the long run, with a fast finish and then doing a solid 10-miler or something on Sunday.)

But then it came to me, I will just do a variety of these types of runs throughout the entire training cycle (depending on the stimulus I am looking for that particular week.

It's becoming more and more clear to me that there isn't a lot of necessity to keep things exactly the same week after week (except for convenience, which can't totally be discounted) and if I am doing it in all my other workouts, why not the long run as well?

Anyway, I'm just talking to myself more than anything, but I figure someone, somewhere might benefit from hearing these thoughts.

Adrienne, I find it interesting that you are neck deep in Tri training and are thinking about Marathon training. Is there an off time in your world? Maybe not physically, but at least mentally.

I plan on taking some time in December, It's the perfect month for it. Maybe see if J wants to go to Hawaii or something too. But some actual full days OFF and no workout schedule for at least half before I ramp up the base mileage into Jan.

See, I've thought of that too Smile

I really want to thank all the Manatee Stalkers... The inspires, checking in, and kicking me in the butt when needed really do motivate and inspire me. While I don't do this sport for others - I do like to know that others care.

I really appreciate it - so a big heart felt THANK YOU.  (in Oregon Ducks Colors )

I put a new saddle and new tires on my bike, so I thought I would share. Love the Saddle, and I must admit - if ever there was a bike that was made for red tires, it is mine. They look even better than I had hoped!!

I'm curious about the outfit that goes with this, but not sure if I actually want to see it?

Hope you are not too disappointed that there is no mask or cape.

I took this pic the day before I put on the new tires.  That is my new car (when I when the raffle) in the background.

I think it is the planning, reading, scheduling and such that you do that I wonder about. Time off from that might be beneficial.

I'll get a pic of me in the fabulous jacket. Although yesterday, even carrying it in my arms was making me hot! I had to hold it by a corner with my thumb and index fingers. Probably would not have done any of those races if it wasn't the motivation of FINALLY, after 3 seasons, getting the races done and getting my jacket. Oh, the things that motivate us!

apologies manatees - real busy at work not had much pod time

I am off to Cairns on Thursday.  Not sure if Macca will race, he was hospitalised with a kidney infection and slight rupture at the weekend.  I hope he hangs out anyway.

But plenty of others to stalk on.  The lovely Pete Jacobs is racing the half.

Training is going well - weather has been chit so no road riding.  Not worried, it's like riding a bike I won't forget!

JoGo completed for the day  a short run at lunch and a good strength session this evening.  Was going to swim but it looked like storms would blow through and I would be kicked out of the pool---then it never stormed.

I got my Jogo done too, and had a pretty cool experience with it.

I swam for about a half hour (1300 yards) pushing each rep as much as i could, then changed out for a run on the dread mill.

One nice thing about the dread mill is you can crank the tunes. So I was cruising along pretty average then the song "Survival" (the theme song to the 2012 Olympics) came on my iPod. I always enjoy running to that song but today it gave me "visions" of dominating the swim, bike and run at my Tri in August. This is significant because I've had trouble motivating to train for that one, especially the swim. It's one I do for the purpose of doing it with my SIL and she backed out last year and this year she's on a relay team :-/ Anyway, that song regenerated my mojo and helped push me toward focusing on my goal of going sub 1:30 on that one.

Sorry, long post but I knew y'all would understand.

Great job to the racing Manatees this weekend (I know the weekend is over but yesterday was a holiday here so its only just done for me)!

I've been reading some running stuff and I now need some advice as to whether I am in the realm of possibility or not with a goal I have. So my goal is to run the HM at the Perth city2surf at the end of August (12weeks away).

I have the Hal Higdon beginner HM 12 week plan which has 3 run days a week. The thing that has got me questioning it is that the weekly mileage seems to increase very quickly.

Also, and this is probably the biggest thing, the 4k run that I did last weekend is the longest run that I have ever done. I don't have a very strong running base and my training has been a bit haphazard so i am already struggling to do the distances that are on the plan.

I know that the Manatee motto is JUST DO EEEET, but is this the best option or should I work on the running base and do the 10km instead? Should I be running shorter distances and running more often? Am I just over thinking this and need to just HTFU and do it? I want to do this event but I want to do it properly and enjoy it not suffer my way through it and I also want to run it not ran/walk it.

While we are always quick to say doooo eeeet, we are also mindful of appropriate training. 4k to 13.1 miles in 12 weeks is a HUGE mileage gain each week. Standard thought is only increasing 10% each week and you'd have to do far more than that. More experienced runners will chime in but I'm thinking do the 10k.

This Manatee says it might be wiser to wait until you have more run base.  If your longest run ever has been 4K that isn't even 1/2 the distance you want to run.  If you don't have a good base then building up distance too fast could lead to an injury and lengthy recovery.  Is there a 10K you could aim for?  That would be doable without ramping the volume so much.

If you decide to JUST DO EEET then you have to commit to run walk intervals to lessen the stress on your body.

Okay, I kinda slacked on my reporting: On Saturday, my Jogo was a 45 minute swim at the gym (stupid boat stuff at the lake--BOO!), On Sunday, I needed a kind of 'break'--I did a 30 minute walk. Today, I did some Body Combat dvd-ing for 50 minutes.

Tomorrow I plan to hit the bike trail. And then, this Friday, I don the Frog suit again for the Dream Night event at work--special kids all around, and I hang with them for the whole 5 hour event....too bad temps are forecast to be 105 degrees that day! Sealed
