And to help Tony, David (really sorry!) and anyone else post workout, what do most of you do to stay limber immediately after a run or ride, especially if you're time crunched? do you stretch before or after swimming???
I am doing the Virginia Beach 1/2 and am pretty excited!! I would really love a sub 1:55 but will take a sub 2 hour. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() tahrens - 2012-03-14 10:09 AM Was supposed to be racing the American Tobacco Trail half this weekend but the doctor said no. Since Suzy cares so much I’ll give some details. First, to defend my coach, he did say it was more than muscle imbalance; I was just giving the Readers Digest version. A quick anatomy lesson, there are tiny bones fused to the end of your metatarsals (1st and 5th) called sesamoid bones. They are like tiny knee caps for your feet bones. The one on the bottom of my fifth is either cracked or anatomically “weird.” Dr can’t tell from the x-ray if there is a hairline fracture or two bones fused together and are creating the shadow. Either way it’s the old R.I.C.E. treatment. I’m waiting to hear from the coach on his theories on how this occurred. Mine are I took too much time off and started back in with a combination of long runs and speed work – both of which are stressful to feet that aren’t use to being used. I’ve ruled out all the usual culprits; shoes, running surfaces, etc. and the coach and I discovered that I am weak on the left side causing me to role to the outside of the foot when I fatigue. And when you combine that with a stronger foot push for speed work it’s become painful. What I find interesting is the whole time I was IM training I never had issues with the left foot or left side core. But now that I’ve switched to speed work it’s presenting itself. I also think my increased focus on improving my running form is revealing issues that were masked with crappy body positioning. We’ll get there in the end I guess. It should be pretty easy to see whether the above is factual. If you roll to the outside the wear pattern on your shoe should be evident. Was it an x-ray you got? MRI? Bone Scan? Typically you would not see a white line unless some healing is taking place. Is there follow up with a PT? I don't know squat about your coach, but I would always rely on the advice/exercises/plan of attack from a solid PT with a running background. Like I said before anything with feet freaks me out, especially if it is a fracture. I know the foot anatomy well and I know it took me 6 frickin' months to be solid after I had the 4th met stress fracture. Keep us posted. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good luck to all of our racers!!!! Go out and get some. green. Deb, we ladies are counting on you to CRUSH the competition. Oh, and Trevor, of course. John, I thought Suzy said the 910 was the bees knees. and why do you hear me when you run?
Garmin FR210 review: AWESOME! I love my new FR210. Anyone looking for a comfy running watch with excellent satellite pick up, very steady HR readings and all around great buy (I got mine for $110 after rebate, without heart rate strap--using my Garmin 305 strap but I've heard it picks up polar, too). It was really easy to use this past weekend on my race. |

And to help Tony, David (really sorry!) and anyone else post workout, what do most of you do to stay limber immediately after a run or ride, especially if you're time crunched? do you stretch before or after swimming??? I'm doing the Mount Cootha Ride in Brisbane on Sunday, its an 85km ride around the city with a notoriously hard hill climb up Mount Cootha half way. It's 2.5km with an average gradient of 10%! I'm debating whether to use my old bike with its 12-28 cassette or the new one with the 11-25??? As far as stretching goes, I've changed over the years, I tend to do a few dynamic stretches before a run and then do hamstring/calf stretches followed by quad stretches and finally stretch backwards with hands clasped at the end of a run/ride. I'm very cautious of over-stretching, I've been injured by stretching before, sometimes I just know that stretching's a bad idea and give my legs a gentle self massage instead. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() This is the signature line from one of the guys in the Tritalk forum. I have never tried the 910, but I thought this was pretty funny:
Analog Wall Pace Clock: Free. Waterproof Wristwatch: $10. Watching Triathletes get hustled out of $500 for a Garmin that counts laps: Priceless. |

It was really easy to use this past weekend on my race. That is a great price Kim. Where did you get that deal? I bought mine from Sports Basement for 200.00, but we had a 20% discount coupon from Kathy's Dragonboat team, that brought the price to 160.00, then I used this rebate, since I swim at the pool at my local college, my ID pass has the college name on it...so it worked for me! I wasn't sure it would, but we do have to pay for and register for the swim conditioning class to use the lap pool, so i guess that makes me a student athlete. $110 is a steal for this watch, it works really well. I think my frugal waiting game paid off. Are you a member of REI? They have occasional 20% promotions and then you would get the 10% end of year cash back. I couldn't pass it up. The only thing it doesn't have is auto pause, and no time alerts for my nutrition...but gosh, I really love the way it feels on my little itty bitty wrist, TREV. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() No racing. I used to stretch quite a bit, and do quite a bit of Yoga. Especially after hamstring injury, I was really committed to Yoga and deep stretching... and I kept having insertion pain. It was getting worse. I jumped online just out of curiosity, and came across an overwhelming number of articles that linked yoga to hamstring insertion pain. Hmmmmm. So I stopped yoga. And I stopped stretching. And this pain that had been plaguing me for MONTHS went away. Go figure. I'm not anti-stretching -- I think it feels soooooo good. But I do see where one can over-do it and create potential problems. For now, not stretching is working. If I'm really sore I may do a bit, or do some rolling, but I'm not doing anything regular. That's all I got. Good luck racers. Crush your half MARY, Fatty! |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I do not know all the repercussions of saying "no." I do not know what my family wants/needs. There are a heck of a lot of issues involved. Cultural, my children's world, career future, extended family, costs, salary, responsibilities, etc. I am still in Germany and I will be discussing this at length with my wife when I return. I made her aware of the situation as best as I know it right now. I am trying to talk to my other boss in the US, the General Counsel. This is complicated. |

Good luck, Doug. That is definitely not a small or quick decision. I'm sure once you have all the information and input from your family you will make the decision that's right for you all. What a great adventure it would be! |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Why do some people feel the need to lie when they're not even being questioned? Yesterday, as I was putting my bike back on the rack, some random guy rides up on an urban bike and strikes up a conversation. We talked for a couple of minutes, then he volunteers that after riding his urban bike for a couple of months it has improved his average speed on his road bike from 26-28mph to over 30. I asked if he meant km's (giving him the benefit of the doubt that he might be Canadian). He said no, mph. I told him that was really fast, to which he responds that he used to be a lot faster. I'm not sure when that would've been since he couldn't have been 30. And not to judge, but he was dressed like a typical high school skateboarder. Why does someone feel the need to just flat out lie to someone?!? I expect it from defendants, but why some random guy in the parking lot on a random Wednesday evening??? |
