Hey group !

I kept the WTC web sites busy this morning

Signed up as a volunteer at IMMT. Run course, special needs station...whatever that is :-)

Signed up for Muskoka 70.3. Not sure why, but I did :-)

oooh!!  We'll see you there at Tremblant then! So you're volunteering with a view to registering for next year??

Muskoka is also a great race ... are you going to stay at Deerhurst?  I've raced it once but been there three years as my DH did it before I could really swim (it's where we got engaged in 2009).

Actually not sure about IMMT in 2013. In Ontario high school kids have to do volunteer work to graduate from high school. So I figured I would do a father/son thing, enjoy seeing the race, give back to the tri community, get him interested in tri, bank his volunteer hours and open the door to a 2013 race.

I qualified for ITU worlds this weekend. The Race is 4km swim, 130km bike, 30km run. I figured if I am going to do that, might as well do the full monty.

Yes I am staying at Deerhurst. I am looking forward it. I like cooler weather racing

But I need to do some work before September and lose a few pounds

juniperjen - 2012-07-24 7:11 AM Were heading out on the second when his handlebars started coming loose. It was a problem with the new headset (I think that's what it is).  We were just about to head out on the highway section too so it was good that he checked it before then.

This is why I always have a multi tool set on me.  When I put my bike back together after coming back from my Texas HIM I didn't tighten the handlebars enough and they started to come lose on me.  just stopped, tightened them back up and continued

So, yeah, that is always good.  He did have one but the threading got stripped on the inside of the headset and he couldn't fix it.  It was basically broken.  He has an older tri bike that doesn't have the 4 bolt set up (which mine does) where you can really see how tight it is and yeah, it sucked.

That bites.  Not a lot you can do with that on the fly.  Better now then race day I guess

So true!  Though he is trying to suggest that a new bike would fix it! hahahaha!  The bike shop near us has a P5 in stock.

He bought a new headset yesterday when we returned to the city - this one has the four bolts.

Gald you're not in my AG Marc, you're too fast!  Oh, as for cooler weather it was around 25C with no cloud cover last year.  I baked a bit, and hadn't been expecting it.

I personally think you'll be fine.  I would probable do a few longer sets like 2000-3000 straight ez to mod.  See how the body reacts.  Making sure NO strain on shoulders and good rotations; that’s just me tho......

oops yeah totally sarcastic... thought the smiley covered it!

As for the Conti's, I also find mine are a PITA, same as the trainer tire.  The cheaper tires, no issues, but sometimes I'll throw on a pair of full finger gloves to wrestle the 4000's on so I save my thumbs.

Interesting.  I have no problems with mine.  But often I am putting mine on when it is like 100 or so.  Wonder if that is a factor given that the tire is pretty warm.  The very first installation is rough though.  I run my stock wheels though.  Would imagine the wheels play a factor as well.

I think wheels are the biggest factor.  Brand new 4000s go on just fine on my training rims.  Any tire always seems to take a little more effort to get onto my 404 clinchers.

Congrats on the ITU worlds qualification!

That will be a great experience volunteering with your son - though i imagine it will be difficult not to be swept up in it and walk away registered - hahahaha!  I was even tempted when my DH did IMC in 2007 and i didn't swim or own a bike! It was just so exciting and inspiring.

Staying at Deerhurst is the best - no worries about getting to the race site on time and it's easy to hobble back after! And really good for your family who will have a place to go in  between seeing you in transition.

Thanks guys for the congrats. I am doubting I will take the spot. Here is my logic, tell me if it's flawed.

The event is 4km swim, 130bike, 30k run, beginning of June, France, About $750 dollars to enter + travel

The distance is close to IM, the time of year sucks since I will only have 2 months outdoor before and it's as expensive as an IM pretty well anywhere in the world.

I am figuring IF (big if) I decide to do that length, why not either do IMMT (in my back yard with 2.5 extra months of training) or go really exotic (Brazil, Mexico, South Africa...)

I work alot in Germany. I could do Roth for much cheaper than that.

Am I way off ?

My son will also join me in Muskoka. He is now thinking this triathlon thing is more than just having a smelly, sweaty dad.

Not way off IMO...unless ITU worlds has more meaning to you as a race.  I haven't heard much about it, so I'm really not sure what kind of race it is as compared to a normal long course tri or Kona.  I imagine it must be a lot of elites though if you need to qualify.

I'm guessing you don't have sponsors to answer to, so just do the race that's the most enjoyable to you.

I don't treat the tires with anything.  Some people report success when throwing them in the dryer for about 5 minutes, but I haven't tried that myself.  I just use a tire lever.

It's actually not that hard to qualify. I had a good race, podiumed (3rd) in what they refer to as 'Canadian Long course championships' but the number of spots is high so they roll down pretty deep. I could have added a 1/2hour to my time and still qualified.

Last year Jordan Rapp won it and Michael Raelert raced, so there are some big names. But it is far from the prestige of a IM event (IMHO)

By the way, if ever you race one of these events, they have strange rules. For example, if you wear a skinsuit for the swim, you have to wear it for the entire race. You can add clothing, but not remove. Unless it's wetsuit legal. No compression socks allowed.

So I gave up my search of an actual dr in Payson that has at least a half decent rating to get my knee checked out with.  I got the name of the place Bryan went to when he had his issue a few years ago and made an appointment with them.  So hopefully next week I'll know what's up.  Long drive but worth it if I don't have to deal with waste of time appointments.

There does seem to be a small variations in rims.  My 808s are a pain to mount tires on but my disc is relatively easy.

Fred D - 2012-07-24 1:35 PM Hey everybody, yeah definitely no offense at the swim stuff, I am relatively un trained but have a pretty big base from swimming so to too worried. Marc, hopefully I can get a chance to meet you along with Jenn before the race at mont tremblant. I am on call today, but might be able to get in a short treadmill run....probably not.

Jenn and Fred, what is your itinerary.

Fred, I assume you're flying into Montreal and driving up ?

I started some swimming again... good news is I still feel good in the water and form is good.  I was doing around :35 on my set of 50s tonight.  The bad news is I get winded really quickly and I'll probably roll over and die at a 2 min per 100 pace when I ramp up the distance.  I might try to get a friend to do a straight OWS with me this weekend and see how bad it is.

We are driving.  We are hoping to visit a friend in Ottawa for the Sunday night before the race and then we are spending the whole week at Tremblant starting Monday.  We thought we booked a condo a little up the mountain but it turns out we are right by the village and what will be the finish line.  Will be good for hobbling back!   But yeah, we'll be around all week - so am pretty flexible on meet ups.

Tom,

Sorry I didn’t see this sooner.  I pre-stretch my new clincher tires before mounting them.  While I am not necessarily stretching the wire bead or kevlar bead there is a millimeter or two of rubber around them.  So if just getting a few millimeters of stretch that will make it so much easier to mount.

What I do is; stand on the inside beads with both feet while holding the tire upright the pull up with both hands.  Kind of like doing a stand up row.  It works for me.

I have also heard of leaving the tire in the sun to warm up.  I never tried that but understand the principle.
