Havin'Fun - 2010-01-20 9:06 AM We are celebrating our 10 yr anniversary this weekend....wow has time flown!  So we thought about going back to Fiji, where we honeymooned (very romantic), or go on a cruise.  Our choice...take our 8yr, 7 yr & 6 yr old kids on a Disney Cruise.

So my focus for the next few days is getting everyone packed and on board with everything they "need".  Harder than packing for any tri I've done

Congrats on 10 yrs and have a great time.  We go to Disney once or twice a year and I've been eyeing up the cruise so I can't wait to hear about it.

SSMinnow - 2010-01-20 8:22 AM Linda--Happy Anniversary!  Hard to believe you have that many kids in 10 years.  We have been married 20 and have zero.

Tracy-You are a great wife.  I think supporting your husband through the process is awesome.  Maybe you can get a deal and train with that coach too?!

Bad news on the Shain front--got a call from my boss this morning.  My budget has been cut for the remainder of the fiscal year (today through June).  As a consultant, I am not sure what that means for me, but it is definitely a lot fewer hours.  Never thought the economy would affect me, but it has .  Off to drown my sorrows in the pool.

Wow... What does this mean?  You will have MORE TIME for working out?  As if you don't do this enough!!!

Absolutely take the kids!  Happy Anniversary!  Funny thing is you will probably not need half of the stuff you are packing.  My goal for our next cruise is to fit a whole week's worth of stuff in a backpack...

DougRob - 2010-01-20 8:08 AM Wow, Suzy has usually posted by now! Since she has not I'll ask the SUzy wednesday question:

Who's racing this weekend?

Hey

If you are going to take over my job at least do it with a little pizzaz!

So, who is toeing the line this weekend?  what are your stretch goals?  And if you aren't racing what is your one focus workout of the weekend?  And yes, I said one!

I was going to but backed out for two reasons:

1.  I will be short staffed at work for the next month or so beginning Saturday.
2.  I really feel my IT Band and Soleus tighten up pretty bad if I crank up the speed.  Right now it's... STRETCH, RUN SLOW, STRETCH.

No sense in doing anything stupid for a 5k.

My last few pairs have been New Balance 1063's.  Before then I was wearing Brooks Adrenaline, but they changed them one year and I didn't like the fit so switched to the NB.

I had a great swim last night. We did time trials last night and I had 6 women chasing me for 1000 meters. I thought I should maybe slow down and let them catch me then realized they would probably have just swum over top of me

I tested the 1063s as part of the wear test. A great shoe. I got into Brooks Trance 8s when I could not find the 1063s (they had not been released yet) after I had to turn them in. I like the Brooks, they work well for longer runs, but I am getting more and more interested in minimalist running.

I use Zoots for Tris, and although I have only used them in Sprint distances, I have run about 8 miles in them with no issues. There are a few things I have noticed with them.

1 You want them fitted without a sock, normally run about a half size smaller than what you would normally wear since you will not have the sock.
2 You may even drop a whole size as they will stretch just a bit after use.
3 Just as barefoot running, it takes time to get used to them and you have to pace yourself or you will end up with blisters. I started by doing my warmups in them, .5 mile, a mile, etc then would start swapping them out during workouts (would run past my house) I would normally put them on second after my foot had sweat to simulate wetness from the water.

The biggest issue I ever had was the rear pull tab hit the back of my ankle and would rub it raw, I learned to start using body glide, and also putting some on the hole of the shoe where it rubbed that that problem went away.

I never imagined that I would be able to run in a pair of shoes without socks (my feet sweat like crazy)  I normally wear socks around the house, and foam or rubber sandals are a no-no for me.  It has to be leather or cloth sole to soak up sweat.  I was amazed at how cool my feet stay in the Zoots.  With some more running time, I would feel comfortable using them up to a half IM.  The full IM I think would be worth using socks.

I got lucky and had some comp time to use up so it did not go to waste and took a few hours off today. I was up for almost 4 hours after going to bed last night due to this stinking cough. I am fine all day until I lay down then my cough goes nuts. The time off will allow me to get a nap in this afternoon plus my workouts still!

I stopped at the gym on the way home and did my swim:
WU: 300 (25 swim, 25 pull)
MS: 20x75 (one turned into a 100 due to a brain fart)
CD: 275

I held pretty consistant between 1:15 and 1:20, slowing a bit as I progressed, but I pushed through them all at once. I wanted to take a minute break after 10, but did them all which leads to a few questions for the group:

1 When you have swim workouts in particular that say 20x75 or 5x100, do you swim them right in a row, just doing different splits, or do you build a recovery or break in between each "interval'

2 When a run workout says strides, what does that mean, just up the tempo. My run last night said 30 mins, strides every 5 minutes. How long would you stride for if unspecified? Another workout tells me specifically 1 minute. What RPE would you consider that? I struggle to know how hard you are supposed to push as it indicates faster pace.

For the swim, I will typically do the distance on an interval for example, 5 x 100 on 1:50.  In this case, you should be swimming at a pace faster than 1:50 so that you get 5-10 sec. rest between each 100.  Same for the 75s, you should aim to leave the wall at a certain interval.  The rest time will vary with your pace.  For me, it I was doing 20 x 75, I would probably take a 1:00-1:30 break after the first 10.  The slightly longer rest gives you a change to slow your heart rate and regroup your form for the second half of the set.  That is just me though...

edit:  This also depends on the type of work out.  I wrote the above assuming an endurance workout.  If you were doing a speed work out, the interval should be longer (to give maybe 30 sec rest).

For your running question...not a clue.  Looking forward to other's answers.

Jeff:

If the workout says 20x75 then you would do 20 x75 with some rest b/w each repeat (75).  If the workout does not give you a rest interval that allows you to complete all 20 w/o a break.  The better your swim fitness/endurance is the lower the amount of rest.

jeff.  i recommend you bm this page.  especially since you're on a bt plan (edit... assuming the plan info in your log is correct.)    strides can be found in the running section.

My goal for our next cruise is to fit a whole week's worth of stuff in a backpack...

Nude beach?

Happy Anniversary, Linda.

I wear Adidas shoes.  Mostly because they are the only shoes I can consistently find in a size 17.  My foot measures 15.  However, back of heel to big toe joint measures 17.  When fighting thru a bad round of PF the podiatrist explained the difference in fit.  The difference was immediately noticed.

Can I whine a little?  Does everyone have a problem where medical problems all come at once?  Delaney, 8yo, has been ill and lost her voice for a couple days (but as much as she talks I didn't complain a lot Wink).  I had Cali, 5yo, at the doctor Monday and she ended up giving urine and blood samples.  Something wrong, but nothing defined yet.  Tiller, 10yo, has an infection in a finger, yes a freaking finger, and has now almost ripped the nail off the same finger playing basketball.  And I am once again on the side line.  I have an infection in a gland in my neck.
End whine here.

John - he said he was holding 1:15 to 1:20 so I assumed he was stopping to look at the clock.  I think he meant to you do all 20 in a row without a break or do you rest at some point.(10x75-2 min break-10x75)

If the workout says 20x75 then you would do 20 x75 with some rest b/w each repeat (75).  If the workout does not give you a rest interval that allows you to complete all 20 w/o a break.  The better your swim fitness/endurance is the lower the amount of rest.

robert.  so didn't he do a 1500 today not 20x75?

jeff.  i recommend you bm this page.  especially since you're on a bt plan (edit... assuming the plan info in your log is correct.)    strides can be found in the running section.

John - he said he was holding 1:15 to 1:20 so I assumed he was stopping to look at the clock.  I think he meant to you do all 20 in a row without a break or do you rest at some point.(10x75-2 min break-10x75)

The laps were all done back to back, just hitting the lap button between each 75 effort, maybe 2-4 seconds a lap depending how fast I turned around and hit the button before taking off again.  I for sure did not take any significant "recovery' time between them to let my HR come back.  I would pretty much call this a 1500, with recorded 75 splits then based on what you guys have said.

jvanis - 2010-01-20 1:19 PM I got lucky and had some comp time to use up so it did not go to waste and took a few hours off today.

That does make the set a little harder!
