mighty mom - 2012-03-19 11:22 AM Hmm. So are runs off long bike rides necessary to get an accurate sense of what works for me? What would be the most appropriate test? My plan (fink int) only has short brick workouts. I was thinking I'd stop with the solids at least 30 min before t2. I definitely want to keep fiber to a minimum if not avoid altogether.

I also had a second day of the full swim, 80 miles of riding and a one hour run in heat back to back

Does the heat make a difference??  Foot in mouth

Are you being funny Dineen?  I think you can answer that based on the Racine HIM.  Body shuts down in too much heat...so what are ya goin' do?  Never mind, I just got it.  Bad Boy!

Do people in Wisconsin speak a special language?

Why do you hate people from Wisconsin??

Congrats to all of our racers this past weekend.  Those that PR'd and those that learned lessons. It's all part of the sport, right?

Had a pretty tough weekend here as I had to bury my Grandmother on Saturday after a long drawn out illness.  The rapid deterioration of her health after a fall and resulting death has made me really work on my mental toughness over the last two weeks.  I feel like I have made a little bit of a breakthrough there.   I really did not want to get out and run Saturday or Sunday but I laced up the shoes and made myself go anyway.  As a result, I think I was better able to get through a rough start to the run on Sunday and it turned out to be a pretty decent training run in the end (with my first bike ride in months later in the day!!).  I hope this continues to translate to better training over the next couple of weeks.  I have been toying with the idea of cutting back the Marathon in 26 days to a half or maybe even a 10k due to the poor training up to this point.  Now I think I am ready to face the full (at a much slower pace) and get back into the groove for tri season.

Sorry Scott about your grandmother.  It is always hard to lose loved ones.

OK Kim, follow along.  Laughing

There was a question about long course nutrition and how to dial it in.  After several responses from the group I didn't see anybody mention that even what you have tested and been successful with in training may not work on race day so make sure you stay flexible and keep your options open.  So, being the usual smarta$$ that I am, AND after being part of the MG for a couple of years with Fatty, I attempted to use Minnow's post to try to point out that the weather can also have a great effect on your nutrition as she knows after the 200 degree HIM that she ran last summer.  Since there are many more experienced long course athletes around here than I am, I thought it would be a better subject for someone else to address.

Minnow didn't get it at first, then corrected herself probably after she saw the pink font.

Sorry for being obtuse!

Scott -- so sorry for your loss.

Rachel -- that hurts. I did it too (went out too fast). There are more races to get it right. Great for you for throwing it down!!

Doug -- welcome home!! Amazing you went out and raced right away, you are a tough one!

Trevor -- glad you are happy with your choice.

I think that covers everything for me right now. Other than that I'll never know what it's like to train in heat. Ever. So when the temps creep above, oh, 75 on any race day, it does a number on my system for sure!!

All this talk about heat makes me think I must be a lizard.  All last year I spent training in 90-100 degrees with high humidity.  Come race day I thought it felt great at 93 with no humidity.  If it drops below 70 I'm running in long sleeves.  I'm such a cold weather wimp. Bring on summer!!!!

****Serious but odd question***********

I have a kayak, no life vest and very little experience in it, but I have it.  I was thinking about volunteering for a local race as a kayaker for the swim portion but I don't know if I would be any help.  If someone is really in trouble I'd hate for the kayak to flip b/c they are panicing and I don't know how to handle to boat well enough.  My thought was to go ahead and volunteer since there are rarely enough boats to mark the swim course clearly so just being a visible presence in the water would help.  What do you guys think?

Sorry about your loss, Scott.

Dino- thanks for clarifying. I also thought you were referring to someone (Suzy) being in heat.

It's supposed to be in the 80s here tomorrow and Thursday.  With temps like that in March I might have plenty of experience with training in the heat this year.  And I thought last year was bad!

I've been thinking about a long IM training day after a thread discusing them on the Iron Distance board.

Tracy- I don't think much skill is needed to volunteer. Soudns like fun.  But if you do get a lifejacket.  Buy, borrow, freecycle, CL. Oh and 10-4 on the immodium.  i learned that the hard way during my Disney HM. Awful.

I think it depends on the body of water.  Having 6 people hang off your boat in 3-5 foot swells requires some skill.   Happened at one of the HIMs I did two years ago and the kayakers could barely keep their boats upright.

Thank you David, I feel better now!

I thought I mentioned temperature somewhere up there, seeing as how Madison decided to be 85F on race day, I was glad to have had a few 90+ days during the summer for cycling. Not sure it helped me that much other than I knew I had to drink a LOT of water on the bike...like 270 ounces! And i peed at least 4x out there--in port o potties! Yes, I took notes, Dino.

On a different note, I saw my acupuncturist for my heel yesterday and he treated the inflamed fascia and accompanying calf tightness with electrostimulation (and needles). Holy Moly. I am pretty good about blocking out pain, but this was beyond my threshold....we went down a few notches, then slowly up for about 30 minutes. He wrapped my heel and calf in herbal patches and I floated around the rest of the day.

Today, it still feels good, so I am encouraged. Surprisingly, he feels that it may only need one more treatment as the inflammation appears to be very localized. Not sure why I didnt see him back when this all started...I am so stubborn sometimes. I think I kept thinking if I just stretched, foam rolled, etc, I could manage it on my own....but the running, even small amounts and easily, never allowed the inflammation to totally resolve. Live and learn! In the meantime, no running, but swim and bike are fine.

Ouch. How long no running?

Maybe you could trying water running? Its a great simulation, and when your foot hits the ground while in water the impact is less.

Hello, all!

What a weekend.  Looks like some great races and workouts.  PBs and mental breakthroughs - nice jobs!  Quite the spectrum of weather - and it really seems backward, geographically....except for Kyla.  Time to move back south, dear.  Love the red font - it takes the special font to get through the fog in my head lately!!

Boston numbers are posted.......I'm 19099.  Up 1800 from 2010!  Still pretty dang slow - in wave 3 (corral 2).  Undecided

Biggest run week ever last week - 57 miles.   Aiming for 60 this week, but dang, I'm tired.  and sore.  and cranky.  Ready to taper, hope I'm not hurting myself with this 'plan'.

x500000 for the Imodium.  Live on it....it's in all of my bento boxes, run belts, tri-bags, glove box.....and I start every run with it.  For the record, my doc says that's just fine.....better than the alternative.  Wink

Now that it's officially Spring, it's time to think about racing!  Who's in this weekend?

Let's talk about transitioning to outside riding.  What do you do to make sure you are on safe on the roads?

Racing again this weekend, Black Hills Circuit Race Cat 4/5.  It has hills in the name which is bad for me.  Plan is to work for the team as long as I can then fade off into the sunset...

As for safe on the road when I ride by myself I make sure I'm on roads with decent shoulders or a bit less traffic.  Always keep my head on a swivel and assume no one in a vehicle can see me.

Totally un-triathlon related, here is the control panel to my Mame machine:

Very nice doug, did you put the background together yourself or was it already on a control panel?

I had mine hinged near the top  so I could lift it up to get to the controls underneath without having to pull out screws every time.

What are you using for a programmable controller?

I was very sad to give away my cabinet last month.
