TIME TO TRAIN!dalessit - 2009-06-16 11:01 AM As far as the difference between the Sprint and Oly IMO there isn't too much difference really other than the total distance. Usually if you can hold that speed for a sprint it isn't too much to take it to the Oly. Transitions should still be pretty quick, no changing or special needs bags. Still don't need a ton of nutrition/drink in Oly just as in Sprint. From the sprints I have done the biggest difference is in the swim length, max sprint swim I have done is 750M, most are in the 300-400M range for pools. Bike courses in sprints I have done have ranged from 12 - 19 miles where an olympic is only 26ish Run is always the same 5k for sprint 10k for olympic so you go from 2.1 miles to 6.2ish miles. This is how I did it. It is for my powertap but you could put the garmin quick release on there as well. Just small piece of PVC painted black, drilled 2 holes in it and used some zip ties to fasten.7 Tony that is one busy set of aerobars! Didn't you mean 3.1 miles and not 2.1? As far as the bars go, I tried the PT on the stem and I could never see it so had to move it to where my eyes were. I only use the aero bottle when racing oly's, normally don't use it for anything else. |

Trevor - For me the sprint to olympic jump involved preparing to race for longer hours. All of my races up to that point we over in 1 and change and I was looking at 3-4 hours for the olympic. So this involved nutrition management and more moderation in the exertion levels. Also, I'll post a photo of my Garmin set up from home. I have the Profile bars that are connected and rounded at the top so I put my mount up there. Andy - that is quite a workout! I would look at you with awe if you said that to me and I do triathlons! AND I LOVE ALL THE THAI JOKES!!! Thanks guys. |

Doug had some great advice with the deadline. I know even when family is visiting me it helps keep me sane if I know it will end and I can get back to my regular routine on a specific date. Oh, and team names... I LOVE "Quadzilla and the Seaweed Monster". Also, really like "cheaper than marriage counseling"... although if you count all the gear I'm not sure it is Doug- Hope you start feeling better soon! Rob- Absolutely adorable pic!!! John- I can't imagine racing in 100+ degrees! I think I'd rather have the hail. Barry- Congrats on your first Oly!!! Karen- You're not crazy, and it WILL be OK!!! Congrats on the hardware!!! On tap for me this week: one more day of rest (probably do a swim and/or easy bike), then I start a run plan for 2 week apart marathons. It was the closest thing I could find for some type of plan for the 2 weeks between Boise and Pacific Crest Marathon. |

More compression in Zoot but that is not necessarily an advantage. Also there are those that will tell you the drugstore brand X work just as well for more 1/2 the name brands charge. In light of soon to arrive house guests....Team name. All Thai'd up. How about team "Fit to be Thai'd" Karen congrats on the podium! I bet your going crazy waiting for the official results. I love either name selection, so long as your relatives understand it and aren't offended in some way. Karen, I think you will be fine. If you are comfortable with your swim, then definitely go for it! Trevor, I have thoughts similar to Tracy's when stepping up to an Olympic (having done one!). I think the Oly gives you the ability to settle in to a pacing strategy for the bike and run whereas a Sprint is all out, all the time. I gave myself 5 minutes to lower my HR on the bike before I started drinking and then took it up to the top of Z3 for the rest of the ride. I held back and didn't go to Z4 because I wasnt sure how my legs would handle it. For this race, that was the right decision. I used a similar approach for the 10K. I eased into a pace to start and then slowly built it as best I could. Going from a 5K to a 10K is something to get used to, but I like it better. I'm not a sprinter (at 4'10" how could I be) so holding this pacing is better overall. Finally, I think you do need some nutritional plan. I came dangerously close to bonking taking in only 10oz of fluid and 120 calories for the whole race. Figure out how many calories you burn over that distance and try to replace 30% of them. Yes, further to Tracy and you .....These points are the ones that really stick out to me. The 4 sprints I've done, have never really been Allout....I think the swim and bike portions yes. But the run no. I will notice the biggest diffference on the 5k to the 10k. Not being a runner, this will be my challenge. If they did swim-run-Bike I'd rock this joint!! I'll just need to pace with the Garmin and go from there. My plan was to survive the first 5k and then push the 2nd 5k if the legs are up to it. Being the 1st Oly I just want to survive- and feel good about finishing. Knock on wood too...Since I've purposing made a point of stretching the calves more at night, I haven't had those tighening issues since. The nutrition...I think for all my sprints I've gotten a little hung up on the nutrition thinking I need this GU and this Bar,etc. Honestly I would bet the nutrition I require for an Oly is actually what I've been doing for a sprint. |

The problem I am running into is not enough room to have the mount for the Garmin and be able to slide the aerodrink out. I don't want to have to zip tie it every time I want to remove the bottle. btw, congrats Karen on signing up for your first oly...it's exciting and scary but it will be fine...Ms. Podium!!! tracy, i like quadzilla and the seaweed monster...it's so perfect!

I really didn't have a lot of options, there just is only so much room for an aerobottle and computer mount that is in a place where I can actually see it while riding. |

How do the cee gees attach to the arm rests? I assume adhesive backed velcro. If so, can you customize it? Yeah just the single profile aero bottle. I saw the new Bontrager aero bottle at mooseman, don't know much about them but it looked cool and was insulated so probably keeps water a bit colder. Suzy I just checked out that runnersworld thing and it's $130.00 for the plan. Not sure how much they really customize the plan vs what they allready offer. |
