Dem's de breaks and all in all--overall, over the long term--I still think I'm the luckiest girl in the world. I wrote Dub6 about this briefly a while back. We've got three Indonesian triathletes who are international-caliber and have been winning regionally and podiuming internationally (I work with one who was only beaten by Macca at his last tri he outbiked him and very nearly outran him but he still can't swim for shyte ). My two para boys are decent. They're not head of the class but they can hold their own among fellow paratriathletes. The Southeast Asian Games are held every 2 years (it's like this part of the world's Commonwealth Games or like Pan-Pac was in its heyday). All three of ours stood a serious chance at the podium. Given how young the sport is here and how hard they've had to work (as in regular jobs too!) and how they've had to battle corrupt national federations at every step, they are miracles. Just now, less than 1 month before SEA Games, they were told that Indonesia tri would not be going. The national sport federation, the national Olympic sport federation, and in particular the Indonesian Triathlon Federation ( = one guy, one very very bad guy who is not any kind of athlete but a long time ago decided to establish himself as the national rep in case Indonesia ever took up triathlon) DID NOT SUBMIT THEM, despite that they'd done all the right races with the right results to qualify, made sure all the paperwork was in order, etc. etc. I know there was some minimal palm greasing--it's inevitable. The triathletes were not submitted because they (all of us who have anything to do with tri formally) outright refuse to do major palm greasing. It's abhorrent and besides we can't afford it even so. It's also why my boys did not go to the Asian Tri Championships or other official ones. They will very likely not be going to any major international competitions. Same reason. (Same reason why no official Indonesian parathletes were allowed to attend the Indonesian Paragames either--I bitched about this last July--we ended up putting on the Games for all youth categories only). Bitter pill. Especially for our top guy, whom I got into triathlon. He's 35 now and it's starting to be curtains for his ITU career. He'll go on to long course, but that's not the point. But the fight's just started. Can't do anything about the national federations (and ITU doesn't care, great), but we'll definitely be taking it to the IOC (they probably won't care much either but my sister's taken them on in open court and won--on a different issue, 10 years ago. So there's a shot).
Super, super frustrating. But still, congrats to the athletes for getting where they are today (almost beating Macca? Pure awesome!). Here's hoping some positive change will come of this. +1. With the progress made so far, and with your awesome advocacy for the sport and the athletes, I can only hope that there's continued progress in the right direction. Hopefully it won't come too late for your top guy. You'd think that people in positions of power would want to get positive recognition for their country through any means possible, including sport. Evidently, some of their little minds can only think about how they can personally benefit instead of the greater good. It totally chaps my hide that parathletes are treated as less-than. I think that they should get just as much, if not more, recognition, yet there's little or no mainstream media coverage here. Grrrr!! Now that I've vented, I'm really not as grumpy-pants as I sound. I'm just still really tired and sore from Wednesday (is this normal?). I'm singing with my spirituals choir tonight with a really cool blues artist, Corey Harris. We worked with him last night on our encore and wow, that guy can play the heck out of an acoustic guitar! If you haven't heard of him and like the blues, you should definitely check him out. |

I forgot it's Short Course championships for Indonesia Masters Swimming and considering I haven't delivered on ONE overseas meet yet (and I'm on their traveling team! Ha!) I kinda have to show up. I'll do my events as fun easy swims ... they'll still be faster than when I totally missed the start of the 50m free last time (but swam anyway!) and then missed the wall on the back-to-breast turn ... had to go back and touch it ... GO MY SWEET MAD POLYMATH!!! (right Mike? Yes?) |

I ran a 5k cross-country race yesterday and gave an all-out effort. I averaged 8:57/mile, the fastest I've ever done (total time 27:42). My pace was also pretty consistent and my 3rd mi. was faster than the 2nd despite being mostly on grass instead of pavement/crushed rock path. I finished low in the rankings (22/24 OA, 4/6 women). Even so, I'm *really* proud of myself!! WHAT THE WHA?! WOO HOO!!!! GO MARY!! |

The fact that the naughty FIFA people have finally been caught gives me hope that one day this will be less prevalent in sport... I was so happy to hear that. I think it's just the tip of the iceberg. Are you going to any of the woman's world cup matches? J and I are thinking of coming up for one if we can make it work. I agree--I think much more will be revealed in the coming months. My bro and I are going to take my niece to at least one game. Not sure what day/game yet. Women's soccer (I know, I know, back to the gender wars ... ) is the bomb. I still remember the Manatee tension when U.S. played Canada in the Olympics As for here ... you know your country is SSSSSSPESHUL when you're too bad for *FIFA*! Short story Government to national soccer league: "You're not giving us enough kickbacks." Athlinks made all the race pics available to racers for free (and only encouraged signing up - no requirement... nicely done, I say). I'll try to post a couple here. Funny, in all the pics I have a huge Shyte-eating grin. Yes, I do love to race (and no, an aero helmet NEVER looks cool). Anyone see something like this from Athlinks at other races?
