brigby1 - 2013-03-15 6:42 PM 35 and raining, but still got my afternoon run in. Was not going to be denied.

I was going out for a run yesterday, BAM! 4 inches of snow.

When is this going to stop ?

We didn't quite get that much but woke up to a blanket of snow this morning.  Going to make for an interesting 5k.  Why do I always race in garbage conditions??

Thanks so much to everyone who posted here or in my blog ...

so Chris, how come it's always you that posts on BT about my various crises? I love you, man. You've always been there for me. There's less of you now than there ever was, but you still keep showing up

We're all doing okay and the most important thing is that my mom, who has Alzheimer's, is doing okay--she is aware of what's going on and is dealing with it with the grace and light she's always had. Tremendous lady.

TankBoy - 2013-03-15 10:16 AM

Last year I don't think I swam many more yards than the year before, but I switched from 3~4 swims per week to 2~3, but kept my overall distance per week the same. I do feel like doing the longer sets with more threshold work at once vs split up contributed significantly to my cardiovascular fitness which made my bike and especially run better. As fragile as i have proven to be there is just no way i could have built that fitness by simply running more. This year I am doing both (increased swim distance and frequency) to see where that gets me. And I do plan on increasing bike and run volume somewhat as well. I'll let you know how it worked out at the end of July.

I've been doing something similar.  I've only been swimming 2x per week this winter but they have been in the 1:15 - 1:30 range rather than the 45-60 mins I have typically done in the past.  I feel a lot better about my swim now than I typically do at this point in the year.  Now, I've been swimming with the swim team kids which is also working me a lot harder but I think the longer workouts is helping a lot too.  It will be difficult for me to know how or if it carries over to anything else since the rest of my training is so different than anything I have done in the past as well.

I am trying to decide if I want to keep swimming 3x per week (short sessions) or switch to 2x per week but go for longer? In my mind, as I'm probably only going to race Sprint and Oly this year, I was thinking 3 shorter sessions would be better, but I don't enjoy swimming very much and the new water aerobics schedule is throwing me off. I could go 2x per week and swim the same amount of yardage, then maybe throw in an extra swim now and again on the weekend (OWS or drills).

It might be worth an experiment?

Sally ..........As far as 2x week vs 3x a week for swimming. I feel a lot better swimming less than every other day. That is all.

Pretty bad run conditions for my 5k this morning.  Even with my spikes on, I had poor traction for most of it - no hope at all on the hills so I just cruised those parts to avoid hurting myself.

I have pretty bad conditions for my run today. I'm going to have to take it inside today. 15k on the dreadmill. Think my iPad and James Bond are coming along for the ride.

Went for a trail run this morning.  Good times but the legs are tired (from strength training).  The dog did not seem to appreciate the trail run as much as I did.  She wants to run but is also lazy.  Its a weird combo.  Hoping to get outside on the road bike later but I have been told I have to program first (Tina's school work)

Had an awesome 80 mile ride this am, in shorts, no arm warmers!

However I do have to vent about this one rider who almost took me out. He rides in the group with a PM, he's a very strong rider but he lets gaps form. Now, many of us know that he is strong and can close those gaps but some riders don't so they try to go around him. At one point he let a gap of 2 bikes lengths form in the paceline and I yelled "on your right" as I went to pass him, but he had headphones in (blaring as I could hear them), and he swerved into me. Almost took me out. A few riders tried to talk to him at our market stop, esp about the headphones but he had a crappy attitude and kept defending himself by saying that he is one of the strongest riders out there.

My hubby had a close call today too..a friend swerved into him and for a moment his bike was sideways but he kept it up (mountain bike skills!), lucky too as I was on his wheel and for a split second I thought we were all going down.

Besides that though, a gorgeous day spent with great friends! Still had some of Mt Lemmon in my legs but I managed to hang with the A group. Hoping for a quick turnaround recovery for tomorrow as the hubby made plans for us to ride South Mountain here. Oh, and we have 8 tons of rock in our driveway that has to be laid this weekend! Better get to it!

Really hate that outlook as it in no way makes one good to ride with.

Slept through my alarm this morning so haven't swam yet. Oh well. Had a nice trainer ride though. 3 vids, The Wretched, Extra Shot: The Long Scream, The Hunted. Managed 291 for 35 min, 292 for 30 min, 311 for 20 min. Finally feels like I'm getting into striking distance of last year.

Yikes. Sloppy, slushy, muddy is the worst.  I'm glad to hear you made it through unharmed.

I don't understand the headphones thing, especially on a group ride. I'm glad you were able to avoid the collision.

We need a load of rock, too. That is such tough work. Good luck.

On pace and feeling great for my longest training run this afternoon (11+ miles), but it was not meant to be, I guess. I made it 9.4 before my bladder decided to explode. Am I just old or did I drink too much? I need to figure this out before my next long run.

I thought about just HTFUpping and finishing the two miles I had left, but it was bad. So I bailed.

85 degrees and very windy. no clouds. Did a nice long trail run....heat makes it a lot more challenging for the dog though she went back early today. bless her heart.

I was solo swimmer today at the pool....hate it when the deck guard has to wait for one person to finish. My rotator cuff is getting worse since i started pushing just a "tiny bit faster. I am getting a burn in two different spots on my arm. oh well ......B/R more and try to find pt exercises i can actually do.

Yanti sorry about your parents....its hard when the roles are flipped and you are taking care of them. I am nearing that point over here myself.

Did no one race this weekend?....This is one of our biggest outdoor weekends of the year here.

At last u were not dehydrated !  Thats never happened to me..... but i go on the side of the road right before i start ....but usually during workouts we are sweating so much.... its a river down our faces here. It was hot enough today to give just a hint of mirages and mind playing tricks during the 20 min i was trying find my way back home through the field after my trail run.

Oh, loved that movie. But a root canal! Ouch! I was a wimp, I'd be in bed with some extra strength tylenol!

I had a run- bike -run race sim on the Oceanside course today.  Ran about 10 minutes very easy, then rode the frontside of the course (backside is on inaccessible USMC base).  Front also goes through base, but there's no other north- south access except the freeway so they allow cyclists on base.   Areas with lots of dirt from the tank tracks

First run was good, bike felt, OK, not fantastic but got a little tired near the end (worrisome as I didn't even come close to the climbing, but I had a decent interval workout yesterday), and the run, well I learned a good lesson.  If I go out at anywhere near that pace in 2 weeks I'm in for a huge blowup.  Not sure what was in my head but I didn't follow the prescribed workout, I went fairy hard for the entire run, sorta to see if I could do it.

Yes. I was reminded today why I love running in skirts. But it was cold, so I was in running tights. No easy access. I've been researching it, and it's not just because I am older. Damn tights.

you know it has been a while since you have been mountain biking when you go to "top off" your tires and your starting at 0 psi.  Hopefully I get out on the bike today, not 100% sure yet.  Off to Tina's park for some kind of special thing they got going on there (since I've yet to be to the park) and I loaded up the bike in the hopes of biking after.

Rode the Galveston 70.3 course this morning (52 miles of it, not quite the entire thing as my plan called for a bit shorter time) -- it's actually quite a nice course and the drivers were very courteous.  Never had to deal with a direct headwind....and the best thing is that I finally didn't have chafing issues!  Seems that that modifications we made to my fit have helped out.

Finished it up with a short run after.  I don't think my knee will ever be like it used to be, but it's not getting worse and I'm learning to manage it better.  I'm going to call it a victory

So much for mountain biking, the surrounding area around Tina's park is wilderness area, which means no bikes.  Sigh, can't wait to move.  I did get a pretty steep hike in though.  Short but I went as hard as I could to make it a workout.

So IM (Kona specifically) was in National Geographic.  A bit surprising.  It was from the swim start and of course to make it worthy of National Geographic it was from the swim and the fish swimming away.  Still cool to see the mention though
