"Triathlons are not my life. It is my lifestyle. I love the rewards of hard, consistent training and I believe in eating for fuel and exercising to keep my body healthy."

~TriMarni

I do this because I want to be in the best physical and mental shape of my life... forever!

I do this to make friends that will encourage me and motivate me go beyond what I thought I could do.

I don't understand why I want to keep doing this... I'll never win an Ironman, I may never win a sprint or Oly, but I can go lay it all out on the table and then go home knowing that I gave it everything that I had.

I do know why I keep coming back to this mentor group, day after day, knowing that I'll never keep up on the threads.  Knowing that it's gonna take me forever to figure out what the last page number I read was.  Thinking that I will probably never actually meet any of you.  But truth be told, as a friend of mine says

"My role models are my friends and training partners. A single mother of four running ultras and doing Ironmans, a 30 something girl after heart surgery completes an Ironman, an airforce pilot was told she couldn't run again had surgery and has finished a marathon and an Ironman, a dear friend fighting cancer for the past 4 years trying her best to continue to compete in duathlons and road races. These are my heros. I don't have to look outside my friends to find inspiration."

Thank you.

I do this because it is fun.

I do this because my kids look up to my wife and I in just about everything we do and better to have them look up to me for being a triathlete than a dad that sits on the couch all day and watches TV, my son has allready done 2 races and was super excited when he got his USAT card which he needed for his first Tri he is doing in September.

I do this because it is good for me also.

Good post Chet btw.

I started doing this because I needed to get over my fear of water.  I keep doing it because it makes me feel strong and healthy, its so much better than just running, I meet so many interesting friends like my SWBKRUN team, and I look much better better in my jeans!

I had second thoughts after my post, thus the editing.  It won't happen again.Embarassed  What is great about his group is the positive vibe.  We are surrounded by those that say what can't be done.  "it will ruin your knees" " you are too old"  " you'll never..."  " you can't ...."  are just things you don't hear in this group.  That is why I keep coming back.. you inspire me to keep pushing.

Chet

You do not know how much time I spent going through pages of posts looking for your initial thread!  Can you repost it? or summarize it?  As I was biking, I thought of about ten other reasons why I do what I do.  It's always great to reflect on that stuff.

After a lot of thinking about it, I am going with the initial HIM even with its issues.  The timing is right and it is only 2 1/2 hours from my house.  I'm going to go down sometime in August to ride the course so I can get familiar with it.  I figure if it is a total disaster, I can always do another one and use this as my build-up.  I think November would be tough for me.  Those of us who live in WI have just started hibernating for the Winter

John - of course I know it was all in jest.  I should have left it in the first place.  Stay out of that heat!

Suzy - I start my Iron Training Plan tomorrow.  I have worked hard to get to this point and am excited about reaching this goal.  The reason I got into running and then into tri's was due to a health scare 6 years ago.  I got a little embarrassed after I posted it so I pulled it.  I don't know why.  Anyway, here is the story..

Out of the blue I had a sudden onset of double vision.  While seeing a doctor for that, I developed a right sided facial droop.  Drooling when eating and drinking, the whole bit.  I was 31 and had never been sick in my life.  I spent a week in the hospital doing tests etc.. The low point for me was a doctor telling my wife and I while I was holding my 3 month old son that he thought it was brain cancer or Multiple Sclerosis.  My wife broke down after the doctor left because she didn't know which one to hope for.  The doctor was wrong thankfully and today I am defecit free.  It took 2 years to get it all behind us.  I started running right after.

That is my motivation for doing this Ironman.  I asked "Why do you do it?"  and I was inspired by the answers.  I have truely met some wonderful people in this community and I didn't mean to get all sappy.

Well I was talked into doing a tri today by a friend last night.  I was 100% against it until he shamed me into it.  I'll have my RR soon.

500 - 9:00 min.  - sucked  (2000 swim yesterday killed me)
14 miles - 42 min.  (Advertised as 11)
5K - 26:16  - I suck at running.  Need to improve big time

Starting temp:  84 degrees.  Finish temp:  95 degrees.

Last 1/2 mile included an all out sprint to the finish, followed by a "I think I'm going to puke"

Finish 68 out of 255 (Haven't seen the AG places yet)

I guess the only question left to answer is "so didy you puke?".  If the answer is yes, way to go!  Congrats on finishing so high in the ranking and while you think you need to improve, you hardly suck.

I am sorry, but I think that is a great result! You did not taper. You did not plan on this race and temps were high. Oh yeah and you did 2000 yds the day before. Yet you place in the top 1/3 overall! LEt us know the AG results, but regardless those are numbers to be proud of.

Sorry to disappoint, but I did not puke.  It all stayed down.  Honestly, I don't know how though.  I've never felt that way before.

I think that is called "leaving it all on the course..."  The feeling is the same but puking is just for show anyway...  Great job getting it done.  By the way, was your friend that shamed you into it John by any chance?

Why do I do this?  That is a good question.

Like Chet, I had a little health scare - mine was not long after I turned 40.  Thought I was having a heart attack, turns out it was a spell of arythmia, but I had been having some chest pains along the way (still do occassionally, but it is not heart related according to my cardiologist)  so it really freaked me out.  I want to live long enough to bounce grandkids on my knee.  I was already jettisoning most of my bad habits and picked up this instead.  I love lifting weights, but it does very little for the ol' ticker.  This does.  I also have a tendency to get bored with one thing, so tri's are a perfect fit with 4 distinct disciplines to work on.  Run today, ride tomorrow, swim after that (don't forget transitions).  Lastly, lets just say I have a lots of room for improvement in all disciplines, so I can see progress over time which is important in me staying motivated.

Oh yeah, that and it really impresses the girls when I say I did a triathlon last weekend

Not disappointed!  You were so close that it still counts.  That's what running anaerobic will do for your.

Trevor -- WAY TO GO!  I lust after that swim time.  Can't wait for the RR.

Andy--I love the new avatar.  What great scenery behind you!

I'm ready to rock and roll tomorrow.  It suddenly turned hot and humid here so I am hoping to keep it all together through the finish line.

Chris,  I think the coolest thing about your race is that you are fit enough to pull out a last minute race like that.  We can all remember focusing so hard for that first race and you have gotten to the point where it is a last minute, "Oh let's do this tomorrow."  Congratulations.

Andy, very hot new avatar!!!!!

Nice job fellas!

Doesn't look like you suck at anything Chris.  Those are some damn fine time's!  If you do blow chunks, do it as loud and as nasty as you can in the most prominent place.   OR  hide a can of mushroom soup in your jersey and dump it out as you pretend to puke when you cross the line.  Then have one of your buddy's run over to you and start eating it.  That would be awesome.

Trev....  Are you sure this was your first.  Nice job!

Nice avatar Andy!  Were you in Chariots of Fire?
