mr2tony - 2008-06-13 8:31 AM Mornin' TAN. I decided to not play baseball tonight. I can just see me getting beaned by a comebacker or hurting my shoulder or something stupid two days before the race. My manager was PO'd because I told him I'd be available to throw a few tonight, but shoot, after a week and a half off due to storms you'd think a couple other pitchers might be well rested! Sheesh. Anyway I was late for work today and feel like a million bucks!!!

I know this may sound like I'm a huge pu$$y, BUT I gave up softball for that reason.  I pitch and we have to stand SO close to the box that I get beaned a couple times a season.  We play at night so the shadows play tricks too.

Once, I guy drilled one right up the middle and it "knuckled".  I got my glove up, but just not quick enough.  Hit 20 percent webbing, and 80 perecent chin.  Split it open like a butterflied chicken breast.  12 stiches to close it up.  Finished the game though before going to the ER.....

Then someone drilled me in the forearm, and the whole thing hurt like a beoch.  I thought it was broken.  THAT took me out of the game....

Shite, I get hurt more playing softball than doing anything else - didn't want it to hurt my tri season so gave it up.  Jiu Jitsu would be safer to do than softball IMO.

Yeah I got a nice comebacker in the last game I pitched. I throw with about a 3/4-arm motion so I end up more square to the ball than most pitchers, which leaves more of the body exposed to disaster. On this particular pitch I threw a fastball down the pipe and he shot it right back at me, so needless to say there was less than no time to react. I had my glove up by my head and it skipped off the thumb protector straight to our second baseman who threw the guy out.

That was wayyyy to close for me. Such is the risk you play when you're a pitcher.

Really, though, my shoulder's been bothering me as of late and I don't want to push it. And my lats are generally sore a couple days after pitching, and the last thing I need during the swim is sore lats.

So, yeah, better just to chill tonight.

Wait - you feel like $1,000,000 because you are late or for some other reason?

I fell like $1m because I slept an extra hour. Which is why I was late. It was bittersweet.

ok... first tri of the season tomorrow.  My wife asked if I was ready.  heh... no.  not that I feel ready for the first one of any season.

-Brian

You'll do well, Brian.  Your logs look like you have done the work.  Relax and enjoy the race.

I woke up with a scorching hangover this morning despite not having had a drink in several days. I hate that.

lvthgme - 2008-06-13 11:52 AM Haha, in college I was talking with my bf at the time about wedding receptions and how I don't lof them...and he and I were really serious etc. and had talked bout getting married and so we decided WE would have the coolest reception ever.  We'd have it at a gym, and eat food first then play pick up b-ball and v-ball all night til we were done.  =)  FUNNEST EVER!  But then I didn't marry him, so now I dunno if that reception will work.  =)

I'm not a huge fan of weddings. Maybe my own, if it ever happens, will be different.

Yes, I will be!!! In fact, I'm leaving work in about 5 minutes to gome and run some errands, etc before leaving tonight! Doing it with a bunch of friends from church.

Heh, that sounds awesome.

When I was HUGE into volleyball, that's all I did and all who I hung out with.  There was one couple that didn't have much money, so they did a quick wedding at the JOP then had a picnic with a keg and catered food.  They set up some nets and we played doubles ALL day long...

Best wedding reception EVER!!!!!  except for mine of course - but only because it was mine...

I just generally avoid team sports in general. Sports medicine doctors' offices are full of weekend athletes that are attempting to play the sports of their youth, without much success.

Those are the same people who think they can spend no time keeping themselves in shape or do any prep like they did when they were 17. Doesn't work that way at 35. I'm not sure what people expect when they jump onto an athletic field 50lb overweight and unable to walk up steps without getting winded.

Team sports have a certain appeal to me.  There is something "special" about being part of a team and accomplishing something.  Kind of a bond.  Nothing better than 6 guys working together as a perfect machine on a volleyball courts - kind of a ballet of sports.  Then you can share in your success and failures.

However, solo sports are cool too.  Your success or failure is only on you.  You get all the glory or all the shame ....  mono a mono...  No one to blame or rely on but yourself.

Then there is cycling, which is a very interesting mix of team and solo effort.  A perfect hybrid IMO....
