mattie-goff - 2011-10-06 5:42 PM We walked/ran home from school, I was very tired. We had steak, mashed potatos, and grilled pineapple for dinner. I feel pretty good after the walk/run and dinner.

Fantastic mattie - you are making the MW team proud with 60% done already!

Alright - med run (3 miles) done tonight - no run tomorrow due to 5k on Saturday!  So far I am liking the 3-2-1 plan.

crimefighter2 - 2011-10-06 11:35 PM Did an early am run today. It was a "fast" run. I read somewhere that in training one should have a long run, a short fast run, an easy run and a medium tempo each week. Any thoughts on that? Also - pretty lucky where I am - there is a local car dealer who just started his own challenge for getting healthy - grand prize is $5000 cash & $5000 off msrp on a new vehicle. Weight loss, participation in local events, post health tips online are all ways to get points. Should go well with this challenge

Wow, great challenge, great incentive.  Good luck!

1stTimeTri - 2011-10-06 8:00 AM 4 miles at a 8:13/mile pace last night.  My right hip has been plaguing me for the last few days, though, and I'm getting worried.
I think it needs to be tasered. Either that, or we can hook you up to a nice Jacob's ladder.

I don't think electro-shock therapy will cure this.  Maybe for my head, but not my hip joint.

tnickerson, that sounds pretty good to me. If I remember correctly thats kind of how my old xc coach did things and it worked for us! Good luck on your challenge!

Got a short run in yesterday evening and am hoping to get another one in today!

First - good luck on the challenge - that would be cool!

Second - Sounds good on the runs but how hard is the long run.  My training has always been an easy long run so that would give you 2 easy runs, an speed run, and I am iffy on the medium tempo - IMHO you should always be Z1 or Z2 or Z4 or higher.  Z3 doesn't really do much in my book but your body might handle them better.

Right now my plan is 1 long (easy), 3 mediums (easy), and an interval/tempo day.  My 3 might be different distances but I try to keep them all Z2 max.

Hope this helps.

@crimefighter2, have fun with the challenge.

My typical 4x per week has a long (~30% weekly total), two short/mediums and a Tempo.  All but tempo (Z4/RPE 7-8) are Z1-Z2/REP 4-6 workouts.

5x per week adds a recovery run after the long run day.

I have just started the 3-2-1- running plan

3 short runs at 1/3 the long run - real ez - z1/2
2 med runs at twice the short distance - I have been doing this at a faster pace with walk breaks
1 long run - once again real ez - z1/2

Since my "long" run is still pretty short, this is working well for me - I think it will continue to work well with the long run getting up to 10-12miles, past that, it may need some modification - but I will cross that bridge when I come to it...

It's weird (for me) - the best running I ever did was when I just ran.  I knew nothing of training plans, didn't know what a fartlek, tempo or even an interval.  I would go out every night/morning and just run 3-4 miles.  Best 5K times ever.   Then I jumped to trying a half and found out what those things were....and I got slow!  Oh well.  I do enjoy a good long run, I just wish I could run a sub 8 for 3+ miles.  Welcome to 40, I guess.

happy running to all this weekend - going to be a busy one for me so I'll check you all on Monday

I have run #4 on the schedule for tonight.   The weather is super weird (windy, still warm, forecasts of rain) so hopefully nothing very threatening materializes.   My first post-race run on Wednesday kind of sucked, so hopefully it will be better tonight!

As far as plans go, I have no imagination.   Therefore I use a premade plan from either Hal Higdon or Runner's World.   I LOVE the Smartcoach tool on runnersworld.com.   If you've never looked, I recommend it.  Even if you don't have a race, you could use it to pinpoint a distance goal and generate something to do for the next 16 weeks or so.

I've heard this too. But so far, I've only perfected the short, slow run. I'm *very* good at running short distances really slow....

Wait, maybe this isn't a good thing?

Good luck with the car dealer's challenge!

I dunno. I think we should give it a try. (It's easy for me to say that. It's my taser, but your hip. Then again, I'm a giver like that.)

I took a planned rest day today, only get four of them for the month...but tomorrow doing my kind of longish run, 8 miles or so...the weather is coo, upper forties.   Looking forward to it.

Hi piglets!

Must drastically revamp my goals--probably to sessions instead of minutes, and probably most of it walking.

Many many thanks to those of you who know me and have wished me well, I'm still recovering from dengue and typhoid, ew.
