ChrisM - 2012-01-05 7:12 PMHonestly, I think for the IM distance, whatever I'd use (if I ever do another), i am going to be well sick of it by the end.  At IMAZ I ditched the infinit because I was sick of it after the bike.  I was sick of gatorade after the run.  I can't win
. Yeah same here. I'm usually drinking coke and broth at the end. Btw I had a very different approach last year, but I was coached and undoubtedly I am rebelling against that approach....

coke, broth, oranges, gels, cookies, pretzels... IM, the moveable feast.

bryancd - 2012-01-05 11:40 AM I just use a bunch of zip ties to secure an X-Lab Gorilla Grip cage between my aero bars. but my bars are pretty narrow and the cage just fits in there. If your bars are further apart, it can be a bit more difficult to keep the cage from moving around.

That's the plan I had in mind...saw your previous thread from October of last year regarding the setup, and wanted to execute that myself. However, with the aero bottle, it seems to affect my reach... if I get rid of the Garmin then I could mount the bottle lower, but I'm not sure of embracing the idea of shedding the Garmin....other placement options for the Garmin, possibly?

Fred D - 2012-01-05 4:48 PM I'd see if. Could put that Garmin a little further back on one of the aero bars, ie; off center, that will allow the bottle to move back more.

There is a mount you can put on your aero bar that puts the Garmin out to the side.  Might be the best option for you.  Not sure who makes the mount though.

Finally made it to the sunshine state (that sees more rain then the state I just left...).  Packet is all picked up and now just time to relax and enjoy being on vacation.  Quite the zoo at packet pick up.  So many people....  Reminds me why I normally don't do huge events.

In training mode I run the x-lab 2 bottle holder in the back. I was advised by one of the salesmen at Tribe multi sport in PHX (shoutout) to try the knockoff of the Gorilla cages that are made by Profile Design. I think they were around $10 or so. They can't be beat in my opinion. I've used them with 1 liter store bought bottles to regular bike bottles and haven't launched a bottle on some pretty crummy roads.

At IMAZ I used a profile design aero bottle up front with water and refilled as needed. I used standard bike bottle on the down tube with 900 cal infinite also three gels & salt pills in an x-lab rocket pocket . I had a spare infinite bottle at special needs in case of a dropped bottle but never needed it. I felt like that worked pretty well

I have a pretty good stomach and feel like I could use just about anything if I had to. I think I could live off the course but  my experience as a first time IM finisher I felt some of the bike stations were chaotic later in the day. If you missed a hand up for some reason you could be sol. I only needed water and chose to skip one or two of the more chaotic stations.

Whats up Bryan?  Didn't get to yell at ya during AZ. I saw you twice. The first time you were working on shots at the Zoot party and the second time I was working on a 112 mi bike ride. Hope you had a great new year. Catcha later!

Yes it's on the pic above if you look closely.

Here is a pic of my 2012 race setup:

This is almost exactly what I am thinking as a setup for this year at HIM distance although planning to put an aero frame bottle in that spot on the frame.  But, wheelcover and a deeper front like you got.

For Olympic distance, I would just drop the bottle on the frame and use only the bottle between the bars.

For training - I slap the profile design 2 bottle rear hydration system on the back.  I have never launched a bottle with the profile design (which is similar to x-lab although a whole hell of a lot cheaper...but probably heavier too).  The weight is why I do not want to race with it plus I like the above setup.

I have no room either for mounting my garmin.  I just slap the Garmin on my wrist and rotate it around so the watch is on the inside of my wrist and I can see it clearly at all times when riding.  I actually prefer this now as I do not have all the clutter in the cockpit.  This also works well for triathlons if you have the quick release because you can just pop it on in T1 real easy.  If you have the 310 you could wear it on the swim too.  Just an idea for you.

Don't know if it's because school is out, but there are a couple of new youngsters at our masters in the fast lane.  they are not swimmer fast, but slightly faster than me, and i swam with them both days this week (they are not as fast as the "fast" guys who haven't been showing up), but they're young and in shape.   I always find swimming at a level slightly above my comfort level really kicks my swim into high gear.

Today is a 1 hour trainer ride after work, tomorrow 3.5 hour ride followed by 15 minute run, Sunday attempt a longer run, probably 5

On the good news front, the hip issue is not FAI.  On the OK news front, started running on the treadmill after swim, 20 minutes tuesday, 25 last night, hips are a little bit tight.  Hopefully it's just back to something I can manage thru California (the only race I've signed up for).

Just keep in mind the recent Cervelo wind tunnel bottle placement test showed bottles on the frame were the worst positions in regards to aerodynamics, down tube or seat tube. Between the bars is best followed by behind the seat ONLY if the behind the seat placement is directly behind the rider not out to the sides. Height or distance from the rider didn't matter. In some cases, it actually decreased drag.

My current bottle and computer placement:

I used to find that having the computer on the stem was too far back for me to be able to read comfortably.

Rudedog55 - 2012-01-06 4:00 PM

what you all got going on??

Had a 50min session on the rollers this morning courtesy of the Jorge/BT cycling plan and have a short run planned for this evening. Saturday is my rest day (though stuff around the house that needs doing makes the term 'rest' relative ) and Sunday was meant to be my long run and a swim day, but the swim is going to have to be cancelled as it's my neice's first birthday!

OK, need ideas on how to approach a March 31 Calif. HIM.  Swimming is my strength, followed by bike, followed by run.  Idea this year was to work on run and body composition and limit the swim/bike.  Worked well until Thanksgiving or so, when a bothersome chronic injury that I could manage became unmanageable and I stopped running in December.  Looks like I am able to run again, but will be back to managing this chronic issue as best I can since it has started to come back.  Not nearly as bad as when I had to stop running tho.  Long and short is my hips right at below the illiac crest/hip bone get very tight after running.  Does not hurt to run.

Putting together a quick 13 week plan using the BT plan builder.  I am filling in 2 swims a week, will probably supplement with another but the swim will be fine.

Was planning on 4 days running a week and 3 days cycling, but wonder if I should swap those.  I do not set the run on fire, and I expect to walk during the run.  I want to get to the starting line healthy, and as much as I want my run to be really good, I don't want to risk injury.  (this seems to be a repeating pattern every year, dealing with some lower body soft tissue injury from running).  I think I'd be happy if my long run were 8-9 miles.  Great if it's 10-11.

I hope also to be racing 30# lighter than last year (I am 7# away from that goal), so that will take up some of the slack

Thoughts on how to approach the run training?

Any thoughts to aquajogging Chris?  Not sure I'd log extra run miles on hard ground if I was prone to injury.  I'd put more effort in the swim and bike (swim for fitness more then doing well on the swim), get some extra bikes and be able to ensure you can handle that as comfortable and fast as possible, and do a regular 3 run training cycle and supplement with some aquajogs.

Chris, i would probably swap them as you mentioned. You're more likely to get more out of the bike training and you do need to be conservative on re-building your run so 3 days is a good place to start.

But aquajogging as mentioned above could be a great option or a fourth day or with a power walk if you just want some more time on your feet which you could eventually transition to a run.

I really like the ideas by the above two posters. Only thing I slightly disagree with is the power walking option. I personally have found power walking to be rougher on my body than a slow run/jog.
