I'm really trying to stay positive but 8 weeks out from my first 70.3 and I can only run 15 minutes?? Staying positive is important! When you say that your IT band tightens up, do you feel it in your knee or hip or somewhere else? Did you stretch before running? Did your doctor give you any dynamic stretches to do as part of your run warm up? (The knee cradle can help me a lot!) Let us know what your coach and doctor say. And since we have been talking about shoes -- how many miles are on yours? |

Hey, thanks for the well-wishes and prayers, everyone ... On the bright side, I "tested the waters" with the world's easiest 2500m swim this morning. It was fine except open turns only 'cause flipping made it feel like my sinuses were going to blow out of my face! On the bright side, the cough seems to have dried up a little and died down a little. On the down side, my head is completely congested, but it's better than having my chest congested and wheezing. On the down side, I'm rocking a 101-102 F fever tonight. So it's rest, rest, more rest for me. I'm still believing that this down time is helping to build back and consolidate all the hard training I've done! I mean, a better attitude can't hurt and I feel a lot better being positive than ... well ... than feeling crappy! I already physically feel crappy enough, no need to pile it on myself. So yeah, staying positive is important--keeps the feel-good healing-vibes going. No really, it's a much better hormonal and neurotransmitter milieu going on in your body if you even just try to keep your chin up. THIS IS WHAT I KEEP TELLING MYSELF IN BETWEEN GRUMPUS SESSIONS. |

I'm really trying to stay positive but 8 weeks out from my first 70.3 and I can only run 15 minutes?? Oh man, I understand the injury bug all too well, how very frustrating. One thing I've learned ( well mostly learned) is you have to let things heal or it isn't pretty! Hope you and your doctor find the solution in time for your race. |

And since we have been talking about shoes -- how many miles are on yours? I feel it on the outside of my knee. There wasn't any pain but I felt it coming and didn't want to make it worse so I stopped before any pain. Prior to this injury I had a non-existant stretching routine. Since the injury I have foam rolled and stretched twice per day. I warmed up and stretched a little before today's run. I'll look at the link to dynamic stretches I see my doc in 30 minutes and another phone call with coach this afternoon. She suggested water running as well Shoes have 106 miles |

Whenever I get a new pair of shoes (Adistar Rides) my orthotics cause hideous blisters. I usually duct tape for a few runs, then they are fine. I had forgotten this when I switched to New Balance shoes for one go 'round. When I went back to the Ride, I remembered that I had that issue. Problem is, the Ride is the only shoe that seems to work for me--so I tolerate the blister issue. Explain about the duct tape. I did read something about it but it seemed like a bad plan on top of existing blisters but once they heal up... I just wrap a strip of duct tape around my foot at the arch. I go almost all the way around or it slips. I have actually done it over existing blisters. Stops them from getting worse. Yes, it will sometimes rip the skin off the blister, but I find that better than rubbing the skin off over time on a run... Something else that works that you may be able to get at a pharmacy is the clear bandages that they put over IV catheters. It is about 3x4" and super thin. I can't remember the name just now, I'll go look at the package and let you know. |

I will say the roids are great for inflammation ... but they do suppress your immune system so stay the hell away from EVERYBODY! Wait, that's me. What would the antibiotics be for? Avoid fluoroquinolones at nearly all costs unless it really is a life-and-death thing (the "floxacins," like Cipro/ciprofloxacin, moxifloxacin, etc.). They can have a nasty way of rupturing soft tissue, even for months after you take them. |

For active athletes who have any choice, this is really important information to have. Anyhow, I hope whatever you and the 2nd doc decide to do really helps. |
