Yep Choo Choo is my A-race - 200 days to go (not that i'm counting)...haha! everythign else is still up in the air - I was going to go a 70.3 in May, but that got put on the back-burner after surgery in Jan...I think i'm going to do Rev3 West VA in August (if its still open) |

Closest pool for me has been down since late January. Was a nice 10-12 minute drive. There are several others around, but all take 25-30 minutes to get to. Should be opening back up sometime this week. |

Will be getting a bit less consistent for a week or two after next Thursday due to two trips at the end of the month, one for my first race. Main set was 3 X 500m descend on 10:00, in 8:36, 8:25, and 8:14. Really had trouble getting breathing right today--not sure why--and for the last one I finally just started doing my old pattern of 2-2-4, felt much better and, clearly, went much faster. Really wondering about this--I learned bilateral breathing as an adult, and according to my coaches do it well, but as a HS kid did the 1650y/1500m in just under 21 minutes with 2-2-4. I know for the sake of balance, bilateral is better, and there are some situations in a race where it's needed, but really wondering if it somehow it just doesn't work best for my body. 2-2-3 often seems to give me too much air; every 3, okay for easy stuff and sprints, but not quite enough for longer swims. I'm pretty sure it has to do with asthma, not just swimming technique--the longer exhalation every cycle seems to work for me. Anyone else have weird issues with their breathing? |

The freestyle ones were in 1:04-1:07; # 5, 10, and 15 were stroke (IM order) and thus slower. Started out feeling really tired from hot long run this AM, but felt better and was actually going faster by the end! This is often the case with my Saturday swims--they take place after my long run (which often includes speedwork), I need to start at the tail end of "siesta" when air temps are often in the triple digits, and it's an epic mental effort to get up and get started. Funny note today-- As I was drying off with an old beach towel I brought over from the US a few years ago, noticed that it was a REALLY old towel from my HS swim days--it had the mascot for the 1984 LA Olympics on it. I didn't really swim regularly, except for hitting the beach for body surfing and casual OWS a few times a week when I went to grad school in Hawaii, between 17 and 40, so not surprising, I guess, that it's lasted this long! |

When Davis died in 1990 I was crying pretty bad at school and other kids did not understand why. If it had been Wayne Gretzky they would have had a lets talk about this assembly... |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: 50 Miles of Swimming by MAY 1 I was 15 (well, turned that a few months after the Olympics). A memorable year for me, mostly because of running. It was the first time women ran the marathon in the Olympics; also the year I ran my first marathon. It was a kind of protest as there was no 2-mile for girls in track in my state. For a few miles I thought I might actually be able to qualify for the Trials, but ended up missing the standard by 6 minutes. Swimming-wise, can't really remember. Might have been around the time that Jane Evans was doing the 1500. My hero at the time was Joan Benoit (marathoner) but remember Janet because she didn't "look like" a swimmer but was really fast! He was a dual citizen and held a couple of US national age group records. Darren trained in Calgary after high school and had some good stories about how hard she worked. |

Maybe will aim for 100,000 by May 1. Main set 8 X 200m easy/build/easy/hard by 50's on 4:00; #4 and 8 were IM on 4:30; free in 3:15-3:20, IM in about 3:50. Fairly easy workout as really tired from long brick in oven-like heat yesterday. Kind of my own workout--I modified one in the plan I'm very loosely following--increased 200's from 5 to 8 and threw in the IM's. For some reason, most of the swim workouts on the BT plans seem kind of lame. I like those on Sara McLarty's website but they're sometimes just too complicated--too many different sets and pool toys and I want something simpler. Fly with fins......one of my favorite things to do. It makes me feel young again. Haven't done it lately as the fins irritate a nerve issue with one of my toes. But otherwise I can (and have done) four or five hundred meters of it! |

Good luck at your first race!!! I am the same with breathing. I used to breathe every stroke before I had my first sinus surgery. Now, I do every third unless I pick up the pace and then I have to do 2 breaths in a row and then 3, repeat. I do not bilateral breathe much at all. Took lessons last year and he finally gave up and said it was fine the way I was doing it. )) Probably uncoachable! Have a great few weeks. |

I am pretty happy with where I am at but will also slow down over the next couple of weeks with a trip and then sinus surgery. However, I still may make it! Going to try to push once I am back in. Wish the weather would warm up. Ran this AM and the "real feel" was still only 10. Well, hands were numb throughout my swim! Annoying! Warm-up, 600 meters just above moderate, 7X100 meters HARD with 30 sec recoveries, Kick 8X25, Cool-down this morning for 2200. |
