New topic to help fill 49 more pages:  what to do when things go south on race day.

waterdogg's IMCDA 2008 RR is the best I've seen for handling race day catastrophe with grace and a superior attitude.  give it a read if you haven't happened on it yet: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=121732

I love race reports that tell the story of a less than perfect day.  They are full of great nuggets to keep in mind when planning and racing so that you can keep your body moving and attitude intact if murphy's law strikes.

do you have a favorite RR in this category?

Thanks.  As a firstimer, I've been asking other IMer's about their pacing strategy and what major traps I need to focus on.

Today I was at my masters class and someone that did CdA in 2007 said our race has two major traps: (i) the swim on the left side of the beach inside the bouys is only for the fasties and (ii) The bike loop from miles 20-40 and 76-96.

I was told to stay slightly right, mid way back on the beach for the swim and really watch the load during those two bike portions.  He said people have nice bike averages at the 20 mile mark and spend too many pennies trying to keep it in the hills.

Agree?

quick odd question for you all. I have an issue with longer runs and rubbing raw just below my arm pits. I have tried glide and a couple other things but nothing has worked yet. Any ideas for you folks on how to combat this? I know the Honey Badger don't care and I don't either until the next day.

One thing to watch out for; I am assuming this is a tech shirt.  The fibers of tech material are hollow and if you are not careful to get all of the soap out of the fibers, it will mix with your sweat and basically make a weak lye that will quickly burn your skin. When it has happened to me, it is always where the sweat accumulates the most.

I regularly wash my tech clothes with distilled vinegar because it neutralizes/dissolves the soap and allows it to wash out. Even more interesting is that it gets rid of the funk that tends to accumulate in old tech gear. Once I started doing this, most of the chaffing issues on longer workouts went away. (For me anyway

Thanks for this.  I'm going to give the vinegar a try.  I was thinking I was going to have to pitch some of my clothes.

It's the material.  Some tops do it do me too.  I'd find a top that does not do it as much or at all for race day.  I have one brand that never does it.  My Zoot tops are razors.

I think people see they have a great average when they get to the hills and then see that their average dropped a bunch when they get past the hills and they then try to get that average back up on the way back to town and then from to back to the hills.  They hit the hills the second time and realized they are cooked.

I think people go out too hard for the first 20 on the bike anyhow, due to the excitement and all the spectators, AND THEN push it into the hills.

I always turn off my speed display when I'm racing distance.  I don't want to know and I don't want to react to it.  Power yes, speedometer no.

Great link, Thanks!!

Josh,

I know you won't be racing CDA, but are you going to be there?  Doing any of the run, bikes or swims?

All,

Love all these reports! It prompted me to go back and re-read my very 1st IM CDA race report from 2007 and I have to say I'm getting a little misty here at my desk: http://speedleopard.blogspot.com/2007/06/ironman-coeur-dalene.html

This is going to be my 3rd IM and I'm going in about 40lbs heavier than my 1st so that's gotten me kind of stressed wondering if I'll be able to finish this one. Reading about the joy and the experience of that very 1st time has totally re energized me.

For all of you that are doing this for the 1st time - savor every moment, enjoy it, think about all you've done to get to that starting line on June 26th and above all else HAVE FUN OUT THERE!

Taper?   What taper?

Due to a certain 22 month old deciding she wanted to be up all night last night, she promptly passed out in the jogging stroller, so I figured "what the hell"  and ran 10 miles (instead of the 6 I was planning).  Felt awesome.  Spent the whole run going over race day execution...which really seemed to put my mind at ease.

The wife is out of town this weekend, so I'll be stuck putting time in on the trainer, but I'm really looking forward to slacking off a bit next week.

I plan to soak as much of it in as I can.  I just hope I remember all of it after the race.  By the way, your 2007 finish photo has been in the back of my mind for months now.  I hope I feel/look the same way as you did in 2007.  The emotion in that picture is priceless.

I caught whatever was going around here and have not felt well.  Luckily for me, it's not a case of the babies (maybe some day) and is just some sort of evil virus.  After three nights of almost 10 hours of sleep each, eating only soup and crackers, and no exercise, I'm starting to feel much better.  Honey badger don't give a $h1t any way!  I keep reminding myself that staying healthy and uninjured is #1 right now.

It's so fun to read through all of these race reports!  Even though I've read them all before, they're more meaningful now.

I'm in for a Friday am swim and maybe some other activities.

Home stretch, HBs.

You are a rock star Bonnie.

More than once I have been asked why I do I do this to myself; what do I get out of it. The ironman is impossible to those who have not seen it. and unimaginable to those who have not experienced it. My answer is in your race report and reports like it.

Thanks for sharing a bit of your race.

Thanks Kiki for digging up my old RR from CdA. That sure was a race that taught me to be grateful.

What the report does not say, is that I had Shoulder Surgery in December of 2007, and both my Ortho and PT had said that doing IMCdA in June, 2008 was a long shot at best, and IMCal in March of 2008 was out of the question.

In the end, I did both races with the approval of both of them. I recovered way faster than expected and was in the water swimming by early February.

They said I would not be at the start line that day, I should not have finished the bike, and I was not supposed to have made it to the run. BUT I DID because I did not QUIT, no matter what.

I wish I could find Campeona's Leon Marathon Race Report.  (It got purged from RWOL)

Here are two really good "Revenge" race reports from Ironman Arizona:

PirateGirl DNF'd her first attempt at this race in Spring, 2008 on the bike thanks to some very wicked winds on the course that day.  This report is her followup in the fall where she finished in high style.

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=112001

This is a report from Fall IMAZ 2008 from my friend Chris. He DNF'd the Spring IMAZ 2008 in the first mile of the swim. He is an excellent swimmer but had some serious vertigo issues in the water. (Turns out the cause was likely the salt tabs he was taking) I was honored to be out volunteering on the course and watched his followup race unfold throughout the day.

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=140722

Both of these reports as well as many others were ringing in my ears as I ran IMAZ in 2009. Dreams, like Christmas Presents yet unopened, make you happy. Memories, like all things lost forever, make you sad.

Love reading all those RR! Very inspiring. It's amazing what the mind will allow the body to do. Decided to throw my CDA 2010 RR into the mix as well. http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp... Definately a day of mind over body. I will say in hind sight I did not train enough last year. I just wasn't as into it mentally. I also don't think I gave my body enough time to heal from it's major trauma the year before. But alas this is a different year and I am back 100%. Race day will be what it is but this training season has been the best for me ever. Enjoy the rest of the week all and try not to go too stir crazy during taper starting next week

Thank you all for the info. I think it might be a combo of problems. Most of all just being the top. I bought it because last year I had the same brand, material ect but they added some seams and another material in the arms. uggg, looks like I need to find another top quickly. Also the flavored butter sounds good I could bring toast with me on the run. Just do not want to be Honey Badgers prey. Because even if I can fight him off, he will just pass out and come back, he doesn't give an S... Honey Badger got me through a 50 last week it was great, I had to laugh. The best part was when I was tired at the finish and my wife told me "Back to the pain cave Honey Badger has not let your out yet" Can you feel the love at my house?

I know everyone right now is OK but there is some form of cold/flu going around town.  With less than 2-1/2 weeks till the big race I cannot afford to get sick.  So, if you are not feeling well... stay the f*&% home!

Dear Kenyan HB,

Taper is sort of like getting bit by a cobra. At first, it sort of causes you to pass out cause your body is worn from the load you've been putting on it and needs time to recover and peek for the race.  But, soon enough you're right back at it, eating cobra.  But you can't eat TOO much cobra cause you're not exercising as much as you before the taper...so watch your cobra intake.  You're also likely to be angry at cobras as well, cause they did bite you after all, but do not think that putting in extra time chasing the cobra during the taper will be beneficial. It won't. Ironman promises a plethora of cobras to chase and eat all day long, and it's best to reserve your energy and true abilities for the ultimate hunting day.

Taper is an emotional experience. Some are adept at dealing with it, and others go stir crazy. Get good sleep, good food, plenty of water, prep all your gear, and mentally walk your way through race day (i.e. hunting day). The highest quality cobra, mice, and larvae--and if you don't taper right, then some jackal or bird will take it from you while laughing and calling you stupid.  The taper helps prevent this occurrence.

You are also likely to experience some odd aches and pains during taper week too.  But, just like the cobra venom, it causes some initial reactions, but in the long term it is nothing.  Again, just don't spend extra time chasing unnecessary snakes, especially ones that require you to climb trees, during taper time, and you should be okay...HBs are a resilient lot.

  So taper on HB!

Sincerely,

Dear Abby HB

That's hilarious! I'm hoping to have the 1st part of my HB Taper project done this weekend so that will give you all something to focus on while we wait for the #s to be revealed next week. In other news my official job title for the 2011 IM CDA will be:
