This has been the biggest thing preventing me from making the jump. I have a lot of experimenting to do. It's still an unknown if my body can do it.

The various possibilities are,

I could take calories on the bike in other forms that wouldn't spike my glucose since I have more time for them to digest. As disgusting as it sounds, peanut butter is amazing for me but it takes hours to digest.
By reducing my pace, I would burn even more fat and less glycogen.
I could in theory use insulin but this will require working with a Dr.
I could teach my body to burn more fat.

Probably the sum of all the above.

thanks.
I got the certification (for what that is worth) and have been doing the hours with our local club to get the next level. But it's all for the learning experience.

Unlike some of the pretend wannabe coaches that I see giving out crap advice in some forums, coaching is something that I would take very carefully and seriously.

People's time is so valuable, so rare and something no amount of money can buy. To waste people's time and sweat by incompetence is beyond me. To take their money on top of that is beyond belief.

To have an athlete work hard under your guidance for months and do poorly at a race must be really tough. It's tough as an athlete. As a coach, who really cares and knows what it means to work so hard, it must be devastating. After vegas 70.3 my coach took it really personally and that's when I realized what a great coach he was.

To the people that say you don't have to be a good athlete to be a good coach I somewhat disagree. You have to at least tried to be a good athlete.

Typing this as I sit in my hotel room in Tempe with my last race of the season on Sunday.....

Feb 26 American Birkebeiner 50 km x-c ski race
April 26   Get in Gear Half Marathon
May 24 Apple Duathlon
June 22 Ironman Mont-Tremblant 70.3
July 19 USAT Duathlon National Championship
Aug 17 Ironman Mont-Tremblant
Sep 12 Chequamegon 40 (mountain bike)

2014 will be the first time in 4 years I won't be doing American Triple T in May. The timing of the du nationals isn't great with respect to IMMT training but its right here in St. Paul so it might be fun to do.   I'm not even going to discuss certain races in Sept and Oct that aren't on the list

Good luck Jim.

More time in the saddle for me this weekend. Anxious to see if I made it onto the NBC broadcast for even a split second.

I believe Ironman live still has the entire 17 hours of video up as well. The pro coverage broken down into S/B/R, then two more separate videos of just the finish line.

Ran a 1:47 (actually course was long and should be a 1:46!!) half Mary today on a very hilly course. Two years and 40 pounds ago I did it in 2:15. I am told 9th in AG but haven't seen that officially nor do I know how many there were in my AG . Also, rode about a half hour there and back. Legs are well and truly thrashed, but it feels good. . I'll be a runner yet

Way to go!!!! huuuuuuge improvement. Congratulations. I'm not racing you anymore...or Arend...or Fred....or..anyone in this group for that matter..you guys are getting too fast.

ask Shane to get the NGP (normalized gradient pace) from TP. You will see the number for a flat course based on your weight.

I'm racing IM New Zealand in March, and Canada next summer, and Lake Stevens 70.3 in August (local for me).

I'm irritated that I've been sick for almost a MONTH now, though.  First the flu, then a nasty cold back to back.  It's cutting my base running short.

They were so close to having you in the helicopter shot with Van Lierde - just a few more seconds would have done it I think.

Great job Chris.

Just finished watching the coverage. No video of myself, but right after the lead male pros were starting the bike, they showed them going up Palani out of T1. The first set of chalk markings on the road were for me and my training partner. Oyama and Nakayama can be seen pretty clearly in huge writing.

1:15 swim for Jim in Arizona.  It seems like he's moving well on the bike the tracker has some pretty wonky splits so it's hard to tell what's going on!

6th through 18.3 miles and less than 2 mins down on 5th while running 25 sec/mile faster.  There is a pretty big gap to 4th though.  Was it a mass start?

Go Jim!

The off-season is the best time to fine tune your skills and prepare yourself for the next season. It is also time for you to gain some strength and get a little rest after a long season of training.

If you develop a strategy for the off-season, you can go into the next season stronger than you ended the past season.
