I just generally avoid team sports in general. Sports medicine doctors' offices are full of weekend athletes that are attempting to play the sports of their youth, without much success.

Those are the same people who think they can spend no time keeping themselves in shape or do any prep like they did when they were 17. Doesn't work that way at 35. I'm not sure what people expect when they jump onto an athletic field 50lb overweight and unable to walk up steps without getting winded.

Team sports have a certain appeal to me. There is something "special" about being part of a team and accomplishing something. Kind of a bond. Nothing better than 6 guys working together as a perfect machine on a volleyball courts - kind of a ballet of sports. Then you can share in your success and failures.

This is so true.  I don't know a feeling QUITE like setting a sweet set and  your hitter pounding it and just...it IS like a dance.  You feel just as awesome after their hit as if you just did it.  Tis the best.

Simple "x-play" is one of the prettiest things to see in sport IMO  like a good oly-oop in basketball.  Especially when the ball is driven down the blocker's spine on the 2' line....  SCHWEET!

lvthgme - 2008-06-13 8:52 AM Haha, in college I was talking with my bf at the time about wedding receptions and how I don't lof them...and he and I were really serious etc. and had talked bout getting married and so we decided WE would have the coolest reception ever. We'd have it at a gym, and eat food first then play pick up b-ball and v-ball all night til we were done. =) FUNNEST EVER! But then I didn't marry him, so now I dunno if that reception will work. =)

Heh, that sounds awesome.

When I was HUGE into volleyball, that's all I did and all who I hung out with. There was one couple that didn't have much money, so they did a quick wedding at the JOP then had a picnic with a keg and catered food. They set up some nets and we played doubles ALL day long...

Best wedding reception EVER!!!!! except for mine of course - but only because it was mine...

OMG that's pretty much my DREAM wedding!  For serious!  Oh SO FUN!!!!  I don't want the big kerfuffle.  Just the man.  And some wedding mints.

the big what?????

I lof "kerfuffle"! - I would try to work it into my own vocab, but it's a little..... you know..... for a guy to say it..... "not that there is anything wrong with that" - sienfeld.

well, merriam-webster defines it too.  I guess I could start using it.....

However, solo sports are cool too. Your success or failure is only on you. You get all the glory or all the shame .... mono a mono... No one to blame or rely on but yourself.

Then there is cycling, which is a very interesting mix of team and solo effort. A perfect hybrid IMO....

My 'team sport' was jazz band. Unfortunately - and this is not a put down of anyone here who is a real athlete and has had success doing team sports (neither of which describes me ) - our society places far more value upon success in sports, being 'first', than it does in people who accomplish big things in the worlds of music or academics.

It is very hard sometimes to be motivated to stay in shape doing solo activities because one is not good at team sports, or even if you're 'competing against yourself' so to speak, if you continually keep getting your butt stomped by the herd when you enter a race. It is really, really hard on self-esteem and motivation...  other than simply looking 'good' I honestly can't find any other good reasons to work out on some days - correction: MOST days. Tongue out

Yeah I was much more musically inclined than athletic as a kid. 14 years of piano and 8 years of violin. My parents never pushed team sports - and looking back I actually wish they would have.

I have never, EVER played a team sport in my life - and it really makes me feel like a freak today. In college I got guilted into playing a basketball intramural game, and I literally just ran around. I didn't know the rules, and had never shot a basketball before. A few weeks ago, I got guilted into playing in a YMCA soccer game... I literally did not know the first rule about soccer, and had never stepped on a field before. Luckily there were not enough girls and the game was cancelled, but the other people on the team just assumed (even though I told them otherwise) that I could just pick it up like any team sport. Uhhhhh.

Makes me smile.  =)  I think this year my girls will be able to run this and other fun crossing plays...trying a 6-2 and both right sides are good hitters...should be very exciting!

I used to thoroughly enjoy being a middle hitter on 4's and 6's.  The right hip, knees and back can't take the punishment anymore.

We used 4's and 6's for the OH.  6 being high out, and 4 a semi-shoot.  3 was a straight shoot.

onsies and twosies for the MH.

When I was OH, my bread and butter was the 4...... I could see the block better.  I almost knocked a girl out once.  I was playing coed sixes (double AA) and she was their setter.  She was literaly a couple inches off the net in the middle of the court, using the net to protect her from the big hits.  I cut it so tight to get it inside of the block that I blasted her in the face.  Droped her like a sack of potatos.  I felt kind of bad....  She didn't even have her hands up cuz she thought it would be impossible to hit it where I did.  Surprised me too, to be honest.  Almost threw my shoulder out, but dang, did I get a hold of it.

This is so funny to me.  Did you TELL them you'd NEVER EVER played?  I feel bad for you b/c I've been in similar situations, just not with any sports.

Now I'm curious.

Oh yeah I told them. My friends are good at guilt-tripping. "but if you don't play, we have to forfeit the game!!!"

Yeah - I saw it - I posted one in the Hy-Vee tri thread on the Iowa board.  Guy got mad at me because I was being a smart*ss.  Seriously, do you think that there wasn't a stone unturned trying to find a different place?  These poor people (the race staff) have probably been locked in a room for days and stink of stale coffeee and BO.

BWWAHAHAHAHA!  THAT GIRL IS ME!  I got that once in the face from my friend (playing pick up) and he hit it SO sharp and SO hard I just...didn't react.  BOOM!  On the ground.  Then I laughed my HEAD OFF!  Lesson learned...hands up, all the time.  =)

Here we use 5 for high out, 4 for shoot, 3 for shoot inside.  6 is back 1.  I lof setting for guys b/c your margin of error is a liiiiittle bigger.  =)

heh, back when I was young a cocky, I would be asked where I wanted my sets.

"in the air" was my response......  Seriously, when I was in the "zone" I felt like I could hit ANYTHING......

Man, all this talk makes me want to look for some leagues.

I wonder if anyone would want to pick up a 6'8" guy that still has some ups.......  Maybe a little longer in the tooth, but I may still be able to play a little.....

I LOVE a good wedding reception. I'm so looking forward to tomorrow night.

Refer to Wedding Crashers.

What do you guys think makes a good wedding reception? Not that I'm planning or anything... but I'm a girl so I think about these things.

Is it the amount/quality of alcohol? Music? People in attendance? Or is it merely your own attitude going into it?

It's the attitude and the attitude of the couple.  If they want this very formal and tight running ship kind of reception - I will go and pay my respects - drop of the gift and head out.  If they are in it for a good time (I don't mean getting hammered - I mean having a good time) then I will hang out and have fun the whole time - whether they want me to or not.

I have no issue with the wedding itself being a formal and sacred deal and I really don't mind being tame while the older folks are getting their congrats in at the early part of the shindig - but at some point - let's have some fun - it's a celebration.
