Coach 10487 Boston, MA | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread PennState - 2009-11-24 10:06 AM I've noticed that there are a lot of very fast BTers doing this race. Potential KQers??? I would say Jorge would be most likely as he is truly an elite. Alaina, Dan, James on Bob (RsCheung) would also be very high on my list of potentials. Going to be fun Thanks for the confidence but I would say Alaina is much more elite than me; at least she already won a race as 1st female overall Though with 2 slots on her AG she has a lot of work to do between now and then but I think she has great chances for a killer race. Dan is been a work in process. He is been improving steadily year after year and IMO his is due for a break through year next year. He is been working on his run (his weakness) this off-season posting 40 mpw without pushing too much. IMO if his mind is in the right place he should have a very good chance. Though a tough thing against him is going to be the quality of the field on the 35-39AG. I know at least 4-5 very fast athletes which will be on the 9:30-9:45hr range hence Dan will need to both amazing fitness and almost flawless race execution. As for myself, I have goals which I won't hide and I have a few extra things working for me motivation wise. There is a bunch of expecations from myself, friends and athletes and while I'll strive to reach my goals, 1st and foremost the main goal is going to be to enjoy the experience, have fun and enjoy my first IM, the rest will be gravy. I think there are a few BT dark horses that will post a surprise... The entire experience will be very fun; I am looking forward to train with some of you during training camps and of course to have more than a few beers after the race! |

Can't believe I made that list. I really don't know though. I certainly expect to go under 10:30. How far under 10:30 depends on how the next 8 months go and how well I pace. It's my first IM so I don't have much experience. As for a KQ....I'm not really worried about that too much. Even if I had the race of my life and with sub 10, I wouldn't take the slot anyway. With 3 kids under 5 years old, that money would be better spent in Disney World. Plus, the M30-34 age group looks super strong this year. It might take 9:45-9:50 to KQ. And one more thing....let's keep up the smack talk. That's what keeps me most interested in this thread. |

Pro 4608 Brooklyn, NY | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread PennState - 2009-11-20 6:53 PM I have much bigger goals for LP 2010... if (and that's a big if) I can stay healthy, I really am focussing on a better RUN. nyone else focussed on a particular part of the race? I'm focusing on the bike. I am still a novice swimmer so my goal there will be the same as IMWI - get out of the water unscathed in 1:30 or less and be happy. Because of my foot injury, I can't predict what my run ability will be, which is a big disappointment since I'm primarily a runner. So I'm going to have a very big bike focus and a goal to improve over my first IM. I am envisioning a few training trips up to LP! |

Great- training hasn't even really started and already I can feel the pressure!! Yeah- 2 AG slots and the fact that it is my first IM are my two biggest hurdles. But, I've got an excellent coach, have been working hard for a while now, AND I have an excellent training partner who will push me in all three disciplines, since we're so friggin' competitive against each other |

Yeah, we all know you've got no skillz. You've got no shot at a slot. ( <-------- Really thinks Alaina has a shot at the overall amateur female top placing) |

Coach 10487 Boston, MA | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread PennState - 2009-11-24 3:26 PM Well I have some thoughts... 1. KQ'ing at LP 2010 will be increasingly difficult. There will be 300 more entrants (at least), which increases the number of fasties. Top 8 in the 'large #' groups gets KQ. So whatever the time was this year, it could be harder next year 2. Sub 10 h is a different beast than sub 10h at many other IMs. For instance, this year at IMAZ, 139 people went under 10h. This year at LP, only 47 went under 10h. (Both numbers include pro's and amateurs) 5 amateurs TOTAL went under 9:45 this year at LP. FIVE! 3. I finished with a respectable, but not near KQ time of 10:46 this year. I was 172nd overall counting pro's. 10:46 at IMAZ would have gotten you 355th place at IMAZ this year. Quite a difference! Last year 10:06 would have got me 8th in the M40-44 category... my guess is that it will have to be 10:00 flat to get the spot. So essentially I am pretty realistic about the difficulties in going to Kona. ie; unlikely. btw not trying to pick on IMAZ, but it was the most recent race and was giving some comparative numbers 4. For those in the 30-34, and 35-39 categories, it's even more competetive isn't it? 5. I still think we have BTers that can do it... it's just a real challenging task. Yeah going under 9:45hrs is a bold prediction for that course and many things can go wrong during such a long race that can derail performance. I should have said I know 4-5 guys on the 35-39 AG that have the potential to do so. 2 out of the 5 who went under or just over 9:45hrs at LP this year are in the 35-39AG and both will be racing again. Another 2 local guys will be racing, 1 finished RI 70.3 on 4:14 with a 1:16hr run. This will be his 1st IM so who knows what will he actually do but has the potential for sure. Another qualified to Kona at RI 70.3 with a 4:19ish and did Kona on 10 hrs without much training. LP is an appeaking for me due to the difficulty of the course for both bike/run but at the same time it can be rather easy to make execution mistakes. It will be a fun journey for sure! PS. Fred - you only need to shave 48min of your time, so chop chop! |

Coach 10487 Boston, MA | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread PennState - 2009-11-25 10:12 AM PS Jorge... I might be able to shave off 48 min if I follow a structured plan (had zero plan this last year) work on nutrition... and if I can have an injury free season. All big 'IFs'... But I am considering the coach... for the little I know you from following your logs I would say you do have the potential to shave a big chunk of time but how much, well who knows right now. A good coach will help you for sure reduce that chunk of time specially if he/she pay special focus on the training with the power side for cycling, help you run faster injury free (no more hip issues). Knowing how much you can be pushed in training will be key; that and of course developing a solid nutritional plan for both training and racing to keep you going every day. I am always excited to see how athletes can improve year after year, in this case I am very excited to see how much you can accomplish, if there is anything I can help please do not hesitate shooting me a PM. If anything with this thread(s) we can keep motivating all BTers. It will be fun |

Member 5 Cornell | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread Hello everyone! My name is Tim and I am new here. I'm doing the IMLP this year and am really excited to be able to be part of something like this. Its been a long road to this point and I am thank full to be here. Any advice or suggestions are definitely welcome. This will be my first IM and as a matter of fact if my race schedule goes as planed it will be my 4th tri. Hit bottom about a year and a half ago and am realizing that its not how far you fall but how high you bounce. I'm grateful to be here and for every day God blesses me with. |

Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread PennState - 2009-12-02 8:59 PM Welcome Tim, let us know if you have any questions or concerns about the race. I have a question: When they say the run course is "fair" what do they mean? For every uphill climb there is a downhill? And I heard the biggest climbs are right at the end of the loop on the run? * For those who've run stand alone marathons before -- would you consider this a PR Marathon course, and average marathon course (in the sense of difficulty), or a challenging marathon run course? Hopefully you guys get the drift of what I'm saying |

I can handle all the small rollers. There are 2 harder parts. Both are on the return, so on the way back into town for loop 1 & loop 2. The first is right after this bridge. The second is right coming back into town headed up towards a light. And then you make a 90 degree turn at the light and it's still a gradual incline for maybe half to 2/3rds of a mile to the turn around point (which you will also do on both loops).I have not ever done a stand alone mary, but i would not say you would PR on this course, but again, nothing to compare it to.PennState - 2009-12-02 8:59 PM Welcome Tim, let us know if you have any questions or concerns about the race. Harder marathon course than any of the 9 that I have finished (which includes Boston - but only by a little). Yikes! Thanks, Rick and Jorge. I'm glad to have read this BEFOREhand! I was mentally preparing for an easier course. Very good to know. On the IMUSA website they say it's a fast fair course, but after looking at the elevation chart, I was very skeptical.
