Expert 1416 San Luis Obispo, CA | Subject: RE: SBR Utopia Season II - OPEN Fred, as for the back, lumbar support and take frequent rest stops and stretch. Also, when you're driving, do abdominal contraction exercises. It sounds weird, but having gone through L5-S1 herniation and then lamenectomy surgery, it worked for me. And a favor for all the MT racers, can you all please post your race numbers so I can punch them into my IronTrac app. I need to keep an eye on the USA vs "C eh N eh D eh" battle. |

Subject: RE: SBR Utopia Season II - OPEN Felicia - that bit about your husband is awesome! He should know that is a nice little car though - there is a fairly funny Top Gear episode where James May drove the Evoque across Death Valley to pick up Cher. As for your bike it is awesome, and even
Excellent looking bike! And yeah, that Top Gear episode is quite good, he liked the car even though the interior was "designed" by Posh Spice And, I'd put "Cher" in quotes |

Subject: RE: SBR Utopia Season II - OPEN Originally posted by brigby1 Originally posted by ChrisM I really need to figure out this pacing thing. Had a 2 hour run yesterday, negative split. Ran a downhill to flat course (last two miles uphill). THought I was going a comfortable pace, but HR was a little high, on the way out. Coming back, knew I could not negative split the uphill so concentrated on neg splitting miles 8-12, which I did. that last two miles were hard, but my 13.1 time would have been a HM PR. When they say the beginning of a long paced workout should be really easy, they mean really stupid easy. Was it supposed to be negative split? And by how much? I usually don't worry about it too much and just run at *about* the right effort most of the time. Some could be over, some could be under. I'm only disappointed when I actually design it to be a negative split and don't get it. Yeah, it was a designed NS. Only by 30 seconds or so, and I very nearly hit it. But I went out too fast (but it didn't feel too fast, it felt comfortable), and on the way back realized I was getting deeper into the hole, and knew the last 2 miles up hill to home would destroy any NS possibility. I am actually quite pleased with miles 8-12 as I held a solid 8:25 pace for 5 miles (that's fast for me). So, add the uphill after that effort, and it was all an increased effort on the return. |

Agreed -- having bib numbers makes it way easier for us to stalk you! While I'm guessing there probably aren't too many with the name "Arend" racing, some of you might be harder to pick out! Hope your back treats you well on the long drive over, Fred. Best wishes to all of you....I'm predicting some smoking fast times! |

Subject: RE: SBR Utopia Season II - OPEN Originally posted by marcag Originally posted by brigby1 Yes, but rumor is they are no longer in Pennsylvainia. They have rented a cabin in northern quebec, and are supposed to be chopping wood and running in the snow. Fred was rumored to not be willing to chop wood with a bad back and James didn't want to run in the snow. Arend on the other hand was running on the treadmill and taking his vitamins Marc was getting a massage from Brigitte Nielsen. Sorry Arend, but Rocky IV may work out very well. With the Russian coming out very strong (the swim), but ending up losing later on! How close are the US pair to Philly too? I see they're already in Pennsylvania. LMFAO... I also heard Arend was doing some power lifting...and was working so hard...even the weights were sweating.

Subject: RE: SBR Utopia Season II - OPEN Originally posted by TankBoy Ok group - I have real-life predictions from both James and Marc (as well as my own) I gotta at least get one from both Fred and Arend. I'll take 'em from anybody else in the group that wants to play as well. And hopefully without giving anything away, I can say that Marc is just as good of a sandbagger as James.... I know it's the wrong movie...but my prediction is pretty simple.

versus this:
Of course I first thought that James and Fred were Rocky and Bulwinkle, and Marc and Arend were Boris and Natasha (we all know which is which of course) but then I just read that Boris and Natasha were secret agents from Potsylvania - isn't that where Fred and James actually live in real life? Now I am completely confused as to who is who and who I am pulling for even.... Genius. Pure genius... And Jason, you beat me to the "My prediction, PAIN!" One of my go-to's... I'd love to get in on the betting here, but as a relative noob to the thread, I can't even hazard a guess. There enough sandbags here to build a levy! I'll predict a tie. Matt |

Pro 4482 NJ | Subject: RE: SBR Utopia Season II - OPEN Originally posted by TSimone Fred - Some ideas. -Get some lower back support, even if your car has lumbar control. Maybe roll up a towel and duct tape it and place it in the small of your back. -Use a neck roll. -More frequent stops and walk around and stretch some. (May not be feasible if you can't leave sooner) -A pad for your seat, I found one at a drug store. -Stash a gel ice pack in a cooler and break it out if needed. -Preventative use of ibuprofen. -Take a foam roller and roll it out once you get settled in the hotel. -Take your wife up on that offer. The driving position can really mess things up for long periods. Fred, all of the above. I use the support/cushions linked below. I dealt with L4/L5 issues while commuting 600miles/week for 2 years. They helped. |

In all seriousness it would be cool to see the aero differences we have. I could be racing at 30 watts higher than Arend and be slower just based on setup. This AM I was doing a workout and did some helmet testing and found 10 watts between 2 helmets. These things add up. |

I may put disk cover on and I definitely use a aero helmet. Judging by that 4hr ride you did the other day. I would say you are very strong on the bike. I might need to update my race predictions with Rusty. |

You get strange looks on the tri bike. I need to define Strava segments where I ride. Nobody would take them from me, because nobody rides up there :-) |

Now you've got my interest... What two helmets and what reasons do you think made one helmet faster? I know the common wisdom thrown out there is how the tail fits against your back is most important, but it seems there are a lot more factors that are coming to light these days. If it was a Lazer or LG helmet...it must be the dimples. LOL. |

If it was a Lazer or LG helmet...it must be the dimples. LOL. It was a Giro Advantage (faster) which I own and a Giro Air Attack which I am trying because it's much cooler (for vegas). I was surprised because with my head position the tail would point up but it was still faster. It was very consistent For sure my frontal aera is larger with the Advantage, but it's still faster. Proper turtling would probably make it even faster but that goes out the window pretty quickly during the HIM bike I will continue to test. I have 4 weeks before I need to return it but will probably keep it. |

Subject: RE: SBR Utopia Season II - OPEN Ahhh...I guess i'm not so surprised that your advantage tested faster given that's what Giro claims to begin with. I thought you were comparing two similar aero helmets (with tails) and that one worked better for you (for whatever reason). With regards to a cooler helmet, how much do you think it helps? Would a hotter head rob you of 10 watts? Are you considering the attack because Vegas may not have wind and there are a lot of climbs? I know even in training with a road helmet, my head gets the hottest when there's no wind and I'm climbing. |

I know even in training with a road helmet, my head gets the hottest when there's no wind and I'm climbing. I think that "how much" part tends to get overlooked. And how much less heat would one produce in the first place by simply riding a touch easier in the faster helmet? Vegas has a bunch of hills, but I didn't think they were really that big. More of a total volume by frequency thing. And no shade. Anywhere. Ever. Except crossing the road in the tunnels early on. I think it might be worth more to put time into managing effort on the frequency of terrain changes and also working on the heat. Both in acclimatization and understand how one will react in it over a longer period of time. ETA: Just looked at the helmets. There is really a big difference in cooling between the two? The Attack doesn't really have much for vents, but doesn't have ear flaps. What has you set on Giro helmets then? Edited by brigby1 2013-06-19 10:40 PM |
