Congrats to you racers nailing PRs, 70 mile run weeks , etc.

Another BY session this morning...kinda chilly so it wasn't the best, but my core and hamstring flexibility is definitely changing.  Had a good 4 mile lunchtime run along the B-more waterfront...another brick in the run base wall.  Beautiful fall day.

And on a side note, my 11 YO daughter broke 3:00 in the 200 SCY free yesterday.  Very proud and I'm pretty sure I'd have trouble matching it, even off the blocks.  I still can kick her azz on the bike and run, though!

That's awesome about your daughter. Do you ever do swim workouts together? Has she experienced open water yet? Sounds like you could have some great tri realys in the future with her. I've done a few with my daughter and they were very special days.

We've done a few workouts together, but honestly I think I'd have trouble keeping up now.

We're debating her doing a full-on super sprint tri next year...the kiddie ones just aren't a challenge for her and they're not even really endurance races.  The only issue would be her swimming OWS with adults, but she'll probably be 5'4" by next summer anyway.

I'd like to join in. My weakness is swimming. This year was my first tri year. I did two sprint triathlons and one sprint duathlon. I average 2:30 per 100 m in the swims. I bought a book by Sheila Taormina about a month ago and am trying to learn her techniques of high elbow and feeling the water. I swim twice a week and have been feeling like I'm slowly getting better at the technique but my times aren't improving. I think the problems are that I lack shoulder flexibility, upper body strength, technique and buoyancy. I'd like to swim at 2:00 per 100 m but I'm not sure how realistic that is.

Welcome!

I can't say enough good things about that book.  I now believe that anyone can swim 2:00/100m.  Is there anyone who might be able to shoot a little video of you?  We have some really knowledgeable swimmers here on BT who might be able to give you some important feedback.

--------

Gang after the events of this weekend I feel the need to step away from BT for a bit.  Not sure for how long (knowing my BT addiction it may end up being less than 24 hours), just need to think for a bit.   I just wanted to let you all know that I will be working on my weaknesses and may even add a few more to my list;)

Matt, I wanted to especially thank you for your contributions yesterday.  You were representin'.  Thanks for taking a stand. Hugs, bro.

Switch (Elesa)--take your time. You fought the good fight!

Welcome to the new commers!

Today's accountablity and weakness activity was getting on the scale. Sobering enough that I'm pretty certain I'm going to be REALLY mindful of nutrition for a while. Other than that today was day one of my shiny new training plan, which called for swimming and strength, both of which I did this morning. It also calls for core #2, but I don't know what that means!!! I guess I'll be surfing BT for a while tonight. If I don't see it, I'll do my normal core workout after yoga this evening.

No worries her swimming with adults as they'd all be behind her.

Thanks a bunch. I'll see if I can get someone to shoot a video but I'm going to wait a week or two or three until I feel like I've gotten the technique somewhat down. I feel like it's just starting to come together.

Switch I just wanted to say thanks for the challenge it is working already and it is only day 2 for me!

Today was a run day and when the alarm went off I thought "I don't want to get up and run today!" but I only thought it for a few seconds and then I thought gotta post in Switch's challenge today so I gotta do it. It was a lovely morning so I got to run outside for the first time in months. the first 1k sucked but after that I LOVED IT and I felt great. 4 hours latter I still do. I did 4k - who knew but I can run after all.

I just wanted to say that the last few months that you have been on the site I have found you to be such a great positive influence, you are extremely supportive and encouraging and we all need to be a little bit more like that. Have a great day and enjoy your break.

Morning. I've been thinking about focus for the next few weeks and am going to add run consistency to the mix. I'm in a good spot right now with weekly mileage at approx 20 miles. I want to build some run base over the winter to help with injury prevention when I ramp up next year and am following an approximation of BarryP. I'm not sure where that weekly base will peak but 20 mpw seems good for now. Diet and glutes...keep on keepin' on.

I'm going to focus on this, too, as well as continuing my elusive quest of not being as stiff as a oak plank.

Morning all!

Nutrition focus is going well this week. Yesterday I stayed within my ranges for everything (calories, carbs, protein), except fat--went too high on fat. When there is a problem, that is it! Today is off to a good start too. My nutrition effort today was to pack my lunch instead of eating out, which I do not out of habit, but laziness. I really didn't want to pack it this morning--standing in front of the fridge thinking "screw it, I'll just order Jimmy Johns", but then I thought of the challenge and did the packing. WooHoo! Thanks guys! Keep me accountable.

Also did day two of my new plan--20 min run and 45 spin (mostly single leg drills--designed by the devil I think!)

Today is Q1 day (primary quality workout of the week). wu,4x200, 4x400,4x200, cd. Had a great buildup run to this yesterday. 5 miles through a tunnel of Fall foliage. I felt strength in my legs that I haven't felt in years. I am really starting to enjoy the plan I'm following and my weakness (running speed) is beginning to change. I think I am going to progress through this plan (JD 5k to 15k, page 244 of his book) through January before starting marathon build for race in March.

Good job Gretchen. Keep it up. I passed up donuts this morning for a granola bar. I've made nutrition (lose a few pounds) as an important part of supporting and contributing to my challenge goal.Sounds like a good start on your workout plan too. I hate single leg drills but they are very helpful.

Ah, I love fall running.  Just have to watch out for those little rocks, acorns and such hiding under the leaves and waiting to trip you up.

Glad to hear you're feeling strength as you haven't in awhile.  I love those kind of days

Agree times 1000.  This quote from Switch has been on my brain: Be the change you want to see.  Add that to my challenge list for these two weeks because if that's not worth the effort, I don't know what is!

OMG! Funny you mention that. After our last XC meet my friend appeared to have dramatically collapsed at the finish line while in fact she had just stepped on an acorn and it stuck to her spike and she tripped. Haha!

It's been awesome weather though I had ice on my windshield this morning for the first time so things are a changing. I'm been trying to get out every day I can and enjoy the sun because Daylight Savings time is just around the corner. I hate going to running at night. My night vision is not as good as it used to be. By the way, I thought the RC5000's were so cool I got a pair. I was going to wait until I earned them with a 5k PR but I couldn't resist.

Oh boy. Be careful! Those shoes are not for everyone!

They are fantastic though. Although ... did you read my last RR? The whole insole thing ....

RW just sent me a brand new pair because of it.

Quick buzz of the tower!

Thanks for all of the support.  Sometimes I need to take a breath, get some perspective on what's important, and as Matt said, reset.  Very sweet and much appreciated :)

Sounds like everyone is doing well and that this challenge is really helping some of you.  That is truly awesome. Woo-hoo!

Welcome back, Switch!

I mapped out the remaining long runs (or scheduled races depending), and here's what I got:

1:35 (1:15 @ race) 12.55
2:10 (2:00 @ Z3) 16.81
2:20 (2:10 @ Z3) 18.11
12K
1:50 (1:30 @ race) 14.6
2:40 (2:30 @ Z3) 19.22
Half Marathon
2:50 (2:40 @ Z3) 21.8
3:00 (2:50 @ Z3) 23.09
2:00 (1:50 @ Z3) 15.35
Marathon

The notation is total run time (main set time) and estimated mileage.  The 19, Half Mary, 21.8 and 23 will probably make up the hardest 4 weeks I've ever trained.  I look at it, and the first feeling is fear, but if I can get through it, then anything I do in preparation for tri season will seem like a cake walk.

There's a quote that I've been thinking about as I approach this phase of my training.  It's Will Smith's quote from After Earth:
"Fear is not real.  It is a product of thoughts you create.  Do not misunderstand me.  Danger is very real, but fear is a choice."

Just got to push and believe in myself.

Looks good Matt. Yeah, that 4 week block looks really tough. So, 11 weeks until the marathon with a two week taper? Am I seeing that correctly?

Yep.  The 12k and Half Marathon are recovery weeks as well.

It sounds like you have a very common condition that many runners and triathletes experience called patello-femoral pain syndrome. We have seen that runners with core weakness experience this.

The boat was being tossed around. Someone noted that there were whitecaps on the waves. Another guy said, “This is going to be challenging.” I began to wonder what he meant by 'challenging'.

One year ago I weighed 238 lbs. and got winded walking up one flight of stairs - literally. I ran across a brochure for a triathlon...hmm. It seemed like an impossible task, but I was intrigued.

So how do you turn a weakness into strength? It begins with effecting a fundamental change to your triathlete self-image.

Work your weakness. In the sport of triathlon, most coaches agree that you should spend the most time working on your weakest of the three sports. For many of you this will be swimming!
