Lake placid had been in a heat wave and it had been reaching 90's consistantly up to race day and on race day I beleive it had hit 90 again if not high 80's.
I don't know if this helps but when TJ Tollakson got off the bike, his computer registered 73 ish degrees. As a spectator last year, I do remember it being quite warm in the sun but coolerish in the shade while folks were on the run. |

It was certainly 90oF when we signed up on Fri. Sat was hot too (high 80s) but is eased off on Sunday a bit. It was so hot, i forgot my bike helmet - oops... Banked that 20min additional T1 this year. |

Be aware of it as it will be a factor in you fluid intake, ect but don't fret over it. You have trained in all kinds of conditions over the past months and gotten through it. You will do it again on Sunday. I raced 08 in the monsoon and in 10 in perfect weather. I enjoyed both races immensely. Would I prefer the 75 degree low humidity day..of course...but we will all succeed no matter what the challenge! |

I really only use it on the run, so I can get my run pace dialed in. The problem is that the 305 has a battery life of about 8 hours, So Do I put the watch in my bike bag and then put it on while I'm on the bike, then turn it on as I'm getting close to the run portion, or do I put it in my run back and turn it on while I'm running. The only downside to that is that I'm not confident it will find satellites fast enough and I'll be running not knowing what pace I'm really running at. |

IM is all about the run pace and trying to not slow down. Yes, it'll take time for the satellites to lock onto it, but you can use that first mile to your advantage-it's downhill and you want to be going much slower than you will want to, don't even worry about what your pace is-keep it slow. Whatever my run pace is that first mile, I'll personally want to be slower. EN videos talk about your IM marathon pace being equal to your average usual long run pace. The goal for the first 5 miles of the run at LP should be that+30secs. So if you are running 9:30 miles on average for your LR in training (LR=16+ miles), then your pace should be 10 min miles. +30 seconds is 'trying to keep yourself slow' kind of slow. SUPER-easy. The race doesn't start until mile 18 of the run, according to them. My plan is to make it to mile 20 before I even consider going faster than 'easy' pace, because everything is going to get awfully hard on that second run loop. And I need enough energy to find 'roadkill'. GL |

Seriously, it is suggested for safety as there are a couple of dark stretches out of River Road. I finish in the dark so I know these things. Tape would work and it should stay on. You likely have some reflective spots on your running shoes and/or tri outfit as well. Most of the course is pretty well lit, even after 9 p.m. |

No. It was very hot leading up to Friday or so and then the heat wave broke. It did not hit 90 on race day. It was warm though. I would believe 78 - 82. |

Yeah I agree with everything you said, my problem has been that ever since I got the Tri bike (March of this year), my legs feel so good off the bike that when I run I think I'm running slow but when I look down at my garmin I see I'm doing 7 min/miles. I know there is no way on this planet I can keep that pace, (I'm shooting for around 10 min/miles). I constantly watch the garmin when I first get off the bike to force myself to go slower. Most times the garmin picks up pretty quick but other times I've seen it take 5-10 minutes. At that rate I'll be done with my first mile already, and then I'll be dying at at mile 7. |

As for the heat, it was hot but as other said, the temp broke race day. It was like 115 in NYC though, from what I recall friends saying. So, MAYBE we can use that as an indicator, it'll be a lot cooler in NYC this year, so maybe Placid will be cooler than last year? Ahhh so another question, do you put it in your bag and drop it off Saturday. Or do you wait for Sunday and throw the watch in there. Wasn't sure how to handle the watch being in the bag overnight. |

Also, last year I go to my bike in the morning and the night time rain or humidity or whatever, did a number on the sticky stuff that held the velcro on my aero bottle to my handlebars. It slipped right off. Luckily I had some electrical tape on me and was able to fix it. I guess a small plastic bag over the handle bars will be in the plans for me this year. |

At that rate I'll be done with my first mile already, and then I'll be dying at at mile 7. use your HR or breathing rate to keep it slow I've been practicing with my brick runs to try to keep that first mile easier than the rest and always try to make the last mile the fastest, or close to it...(but that was then and this is now.) You'll be fine as long as you concentrate on making it super-easy. You cannot go too slow but you can go too fast in the first several miles of the run, IMO. |

At this point I hope I'll be out there suffering through a potentially warm marathon! According to my latest doctors appointment...absolutely nothing has changed. Kinda bummed, but at this point am doing my best to rest it the best I can and will definitely start the race. I figured my options are do what I can to heal before LP, attempt to finish and call that a season, or take time off now and hope I'm healed for Vegas. Since there's not guarantee it would be any more healed for Vegas, and the fact that I don't want to go into that race after losing tons of fitness trying to heal, I'm going to attempt Lake Placid. If I have to pack my boot and walk the marathon, then so be it...just kinda worried about how sweaty that would get if its warm out! So I guess I'll be the one that shows up to the swim on Friday morning with a giant boot on my leg. |

Nah, I don't think you need anymore swimming in! You had a lot of volume for swimming! t hehe. I'm off to get a hair cut. I have very thick hair and have let it go for a long time. I'm getting it cut short and thinned out. Free speed baby! When they cut my hair, it's like there is a dead cat on the floor. This should be good for one more mph! |
