Test run wasn't quite what I expected, but I got what I needed to know out of it.

Took me 22:34 @ 309 watts.  I started out a little too hard @ 318w for the first 12 minutes, then I had a mini blow up, and the next 10 minutes was a struggle to hold 294, and the avg slipped to 306.  Unloaded the last 30 seconds at over 400w to bring it back up to 309.

Caved in a bit mentally at around the 15 minute mark...but tried my best to hold it together.  Knowing it was just a test run is really hard to push through when things get really sucky.

Definitely harder to do in a test run.  You'll have a carrot to chase in the actual TT.

I want to throw up a little reading that.  No, make that a lot

I was tasting blood in my breath/lungs for a few minutes after, but kept the puke inside.

Climbing power, while on the roadie and sitting up is much higher.  You'll see.  I have a hard time doing 5' intervals at 300w (with equal or greater rest) while on my TT bike on the flats.

Yes, I do recall doing courses on the CT, it's pretty easy to get that power up on climbs.

Chris, you are very creative with the photoshop these days. lol. The IMCA swim course trick is quite interesting...and distracting...

Well finished my workouts for the day. Actually had a good swim. 5x 300 free at "T pace". Held 4:06-4:08. The swimming is surely coming back!! Met some tri dude who did the race on the weekend. He's from St. George and agreed with me that the run was "a little hot". Haha.

I think my legs feel more tired today than they did on Sunday post race. Lol. Apparently I really did not take yesterday's ride easy enough....Undecided

Last day in Cali! 7-8k easy run...Going to make it a sightseeing run and goodbye (for now) lovely Oceanside. Swim in weird 33.3 yd pool at lunch.

Also got a suggestion for a sunscreen to try to prevent me from experiencing 'Ironburn" again...its called Planet Sun. Apparently lots of triathletes and pro surfers use it. Mix of Zinc and Titanium Oxide. Will it make my pasty (not so pasty now) skin invincible?? lol.

I used Bullfrog sunscreen down in Australia.  Their "surfer gel" formula doesn't have titanium oxide but they have another one that does if you want it.  They all stay on a long time.

The titanium oxide leaves you very white but it won't come off.  If you care, I'd suggest using it on your back / shoulderblades where you can't easily reapply in transition, and use the regular stuff everywhere else.

Thanks for the suggestion Mark.

I'm currently moulting--as sexy as moulting skin off my back is, I would prefer to not have skin ca. in the future.

You can also wear long sleeves, like my avatar.  Desoto makes just sleeves, or you can get a full shirt to wear underneath your normal tri kit.  Underarmor, 2XU, a few others make them.  You want to put long lasting sunscreen on underneath but then you don't mess with it in T1/2.

Sun gets me mostly on my shoulderblades and the inside of my forearms from all the hours on the aero bars.  The full shirt takes care of both those problems, and saves time in transition.  I just quickly reapply sunscreen on my legs and my neck/face.

My first IM, I let a volunteer put sunscreen on my shoulders in T1 and well, they missed a lot.  Ow.  Never again.

I have had enough stuff removed from face, shoulders and arms, due to my years of growing up in Florida. I have some Neutrogena 70 that I use on my face now; it is strong and supposed to have moisturizers and whatnot in it to help the skin as well.

Haha. Thanks Mark. How do you find the long sleeves do with the heat? I know they are designed to help cool, but wonder if they do? Esp on the run?

I feel like you must have read the dermatology notes I reviewed yesterday: wear sunscreen, wear light coloured long sleeves, etc. "How to prevent skin ca. 101".

So yet again an adventure with an american airline and bike travel. I think I'm going to start printing off the bike policy for each airline when I travel so I can show it to the agents...because none of them ever seem to know how much their own bike fee is. This time they tried to charge me $350....asked her to go get her supervisor because that wasn't correct. She said it was. I said it wasn't. I told her airlines tend to charge a flat rate for bike transport: United Airlines is 125$....she actually said "well why don't you go over there and ask them then what the charge is if you think that's what it is?...they do the same as us: overweight and oversize."

Ugh. I ended up getting the proper price at the end of the day but I'm going to write a letter because it makes me feel better. I accept the cost of my bike transportation with whatever carrier I have decided to fly...but the rudeness and challenge was unnecessary.

When I flew to Australia, I had a small tool bag inside my bike box - some wrenches, torque wrench, tape, spare tubes, a few other things.  At one of my stops, they complained that the bike was just barely overweight and I'd be charged extra.  Yeah just one.  AND this is after my first check-in where it was weighed and they said the bike would be gtg all the way through.  Plus I had already paid up-front a standard bike fee (Qantas).

So I said hang on, I'll see if I can unload some stuff.  Opened the box, removed the tools, put them in my other bag, and let them reweigh the bike.  I think I lowered it by 2-3kg.  Still overweight when they checked again but the woman at the counter felt bad and let it go.  So I'll probably do something like that again so the agents feel like I'm "making an effort" / whatever.

Of course Qantas is pretty laid back.  I think most of the airlines in the U.S. rate pretty high on the jacka-s meter these days.

Re: the long sleeves... I don't really think they make much difference better or worse in the heat.  If you keep them damp with sponges on the run, it might feel a little better.  But on a hot enough day that's going to last about 2 seconds.  We were approaching 110 degrees on the run in Western Australia (43C?).

Was it humid?   I used the de soto wing in Vegas last year (not "Vegas", just a Lake Mead race) where it was 90 ish.  When I wet the arms at an aid station, they stayed cool for quite a while, and after the race, walking down to the lake to cool off I was actually starting to shiver they were so cold, with a light breeze. But it was very dry

Ya I wrote them a letter outlining the situation and asking for a refund of bike fee for "rude and condescending behaviour". Meh, we will see. It was cathartic while sitting here in the airport terminal...

I wear the Desoto sleeves on the bike, and sometimes on the run. Chris is right - they work really well when it is dry out and you can keep them wet - the "cooling" properties (as they are) supposedly works thought the phase cange of liquid water to water vapor, ie: "evaporative effect." I have found that they actually don't work so well (for cooling) when there is too much humidity in the air to allow for vaporation - they actually make me feel hotter. But I imagine they still have the same protection against sunburn wet or dry.

FWIW I have used KINeSYS sunblock for a good number of years - very water resistant, but goes on powder dry and doesn't block pores like oil-based and zinc products seem to (at least for me). It is a little pricy, but I use it every day and a single bottle lasts a long time.

Good to know. I guess I have tons of time to test it out in Maui in the humidity and heat before I would have to race. Not a huge issue at home but the sun does not have the same burn constant up above the 49th. lol. I think I actually saw a few guys wearing the wing during the race last weekend. Glad I have my half in DC coming up. I can ship all my purchases to Kim when I visit her in NJ before the race. Shipping and customs fees kill. Def won't need it before then.

Been a crazy few months and I've been reading and posting very little; going to try and stay abreast of the group a little more and hopefully post some useful thoughts in the coming months.

While the crazy few months have not been related to triathlon, I'm very excited that we are expecting our second child at the beginning of August. This has meant several challenges on the coaching front, primarily that I've had to step down as the Canada Games coach for this August (we were supposed to leave on Aug 10) and I have been working with the coach who will be taking my place while continuing to work with the athletes as they prepare for team selection and then the games. However, things are finally settling down and I hope to be more active once again.

All this gear talk and what I manage is a new outfit. No, I'm not putting up pictures.

Be interesting to see how it does, Kiwami Amphibian. Seems to stay snug without being tight. Also had to try throwing water on it, and the thing really does not get wet.

Hooray for a new baby! Congratulations.

Shane, a sincere congratulations - very, very exciting news for you and your (growing) family! However I do believe you have forgotten how the "new baby thing" works if you think you are about to have more time for BT....
