Just back from Colorado, trying to get back into the groove.

No racing for me this weekend.  Shooting off some fireworks in the front yard for the 4th.  We give the kids the option every year of going downtown and watching the fireworks vs. doing them in our front yard and luckilly they pick the front yard option.

I have been getting horribly painful Charley Horse cramps in the middle of the night lately.  The pain usually lasts for a couple of days.  Any thoughts?

Morning All!!  I have questions.....

1. What exactly is Canada Day?

2. Who is Jim Sheen?

3. What does Fatty no so fatty's signature mean?

Rachel, I have always read that Charlie Horses can be caused by overuse of the muscle, contracting it in your sleep or having a deficiency in magnesium.  Not sure any of that pertains to you.    I do know when I get a severe cramp in a race or afterwards that area hurts for a few days.

Dineen, I too was out doing a little something. Today was OWS day with the man in the kayak. Weather is overcast and gloomy so we were the only two on the lake.  Can't beat that with a stick!!

Now for my swimming question of the day/week/month:  I've never kicked while OWSing, but have been told to start.  It might make my glacial pace a little quicker.  When I do, I veer off course.  Why?  only serious answers need apply.  Fatty, keep your snide comments about my lack of talent in this department to yourself. Love you.

Happy Canada Day!I swam this morning at the outdoor pool and was having a great time, and then they closed it early for the team practice, boo hoo, only finished 1900/2800. Oops, on the bright side, it was beautiful out. Suzy, your last sentiment to John is part of his Sig. Cmon, pay attention!

I won't count the fact you can't count against you.  It is two unanswered questions...one for Kyla and then the swim question.

HOT up here too.  Had to do a hangover on the boat to cool off and take care of another pressing issue!

I have no answer for the swim question, seeing as I really don't kick. The only thing I can think of for navigating is that somehow your feet become your rudders (YOU, personally, not you "one"). Or maybe you think so much about kicking that you stop thinking about other things and/or site less? Do you kick differently in the pool vs. OWS?

We are supposed to hit 80 on Tuesday!!! First time in something like 300 days. The joke around here (not funny) is that summer starts for realz on July 5. Looks like we are right on schedule.

Sorry, I can't count today .......  and I have no idea who Jim Stein is?  Kyla??

I have been taught, insert smartalec comments here, that when endurance swimming the purpose of your kick is as the catalyst for your rotation, not a means of propulsion.  SO, if you are rotating more to one side as you swim, you will get a better pull on that side and will veer off course.  Is Brett working on increasing your rotation?

Just something else to think about when you swim tomorrow, along with not swallowing any water, keeping your elbows high, getting a good pull, actually breathing and siting, keeping your head down, keeping your chest down, not barging your feet, has Paul gone the other way in the Kayak, is that  a snake, etc.  Laughing

Where to begin...1) I've heard that the kick aids rotation, but I've also been told it will speed me up a sniff, 2) Brett is mainly working to balance my stroke by making me bilateral breathe.  I do pull much harder with my right arm (Breathing side) than the left, but there is no consistency about which way I go off course. Today I tried keeping my right arm wider and that helped a little  3) I've been working on high elbows above water and below and feel decent about both, still need more work on the insweep.  Too wide on the left side...phooey!, 4) I swallow way more air than water and it causes all sorts of issues later, been working on more even breathing under water vs blowing and gasping, 5) Paul has become quite accomplished at Kayaking.  Now if I could only get him to stay with me versus explore on his own.  He swears he could get to me in moments if a boat approaches.  This year so far, I'm believing it.

Did you notice the Athlete Guide came out for Racine? no bibs or waves...isn't that a little weird?

Enjoy your BTD tomorrow.  I think I'll be taking a dip in big bad Lake Michigan on the Chicago side a few days before the race.  Swimming lesson with Brett.  What doesn't kill you, will make you stronger! right?????

ETA: This is one of my favorite paragraphs from the speech, and it makes me think of Tony and how he finds swimming so incredibly boring:

It's fair to say I know a little bit about the mechanics and the energetics of swimming, but, let's face it, as a game it's pretty simple. One performs in a contained environment, making one's way up and down a clearly marked, unimaginative path countless times with the sole objective of arriving in time and in a good position. What makes this challenging is the fact that one negotiates this path while carrying a veritable panoply of emotions, expectations, and desired outcomes—all of which change from day to day, month to month, and year to year.

Happy Canada Day!

Good luck to our racers!

I'm at home in Kalispell, MT, a very rare occasion, and planning to go for a bike ride in Glacier National Park sometime this weekend. Before they open the Going-to-the Sun road to cars for the season, they open it to hikers/bikers only and it's a really beautiful ride.  I haven't done it for a couple years, so I'm really excited! Have a great weekend everyone!

Are both your feet pointed? I know you had some feet problems in the past like me. I had trouble keeping my rt foot pointed as much as my left due to my issues with my rt foot. Stretching and kick drills with fins helped me.

If you're not racing, what's up for the July 4th weekend?

June's mileage, Sorry about being a stranger. Have been reading some just been really tired so after posting all of my workouts for the day I just shut down the computer and head to bed. well my training for my next HIM is in full swing I am working on one of the BT plan and I can sure tell the difference between my last plan and this one.

Swim: Time 9:47:42, Distance 29,950 (17.02miles)

Bike: Time 19:32:43, Distance 337.24

Run: Time 13:06:16, Distance 94.42

I did get in a brick work for the first time off my Cannondale and all I can say is WOW!!! what a difference from my Tarmac road bike to the TT TRI bike leg were fresher and felt like I had better running form.

Good Luck to all of the racer hope hear about all the accomplishments and PR's
