1786. Classy, yet unpretentious.

And another vote for zinc lozenges. I just got the cheaper store brand, and they helped me quite a bit. Feel better.

Zinc  is good and I swear by Airborne.

I've been taking 1 Airborne 2x a day for the last week to boost the immune system.  It always seems to do the trick when I feeling something coming on.  Throast has been scratchy last few days but could be due to allergies.

I think I've discovered part of the taper madness.  The time that passes that you could possibly get sick or hurt yourself is part of the torture...

I had an easy 1hr run last night....and I bonked. WTF? I cant even remember the last time I bonked, let alone during training. Im blaming this on the taper...

The last two days I have no energy WTF!! I bonked on my swim which is my best event. I went to bed a 1800 last night and
got up around 5 so far I feel much better. I did an hour trainer ride and 2mile brick.  So far I feel like my energy
tank is back up.  The Cobra I ate the other night must have bit me and that’s why I was such a tired HB.

This is crazy, I love reading about taper time. It sounds like 1/2 of us are getting sick. I stayed home from work yesterday and have been laying in bed for two days because of being sick.

Hopefully it my body's way of telling me to rest more than I'm thinking...it must know that the last weekend in June is coming up again .

This website shows the current water temps for CDA. That is what I've used the last few years and it seems pretty reliable. Anything above 57 and who cares!

I think it would be fun to see a summary of splits vs goal from this group.

You guys think it's ok to zip-tie /velcro my bicycle pump to my gear bag for tri-bike?  It won't fit inside otherwise.

Thanks!

#2553!  I guess you will be able to recognize me as the old geezer running without a cane.  At least my beard won't be frosted-over and I don't think I will need to wear my balaclava :D

I may not be traveling the longest distance...but I am driving from Maine with my family, bringing our camper.  Do  I get get a double IM designation for that?

Shermbelle - 2011-06-15 9:53 PM For those using Tribike Transport, what are you using to tag your bike, wheels and gear bag with? I think I can get some  luggage tags but I know they suggested putting something inside wheel bag and gear bag too. Maybe I am overlooking something here.

I just used luggage tags, inside and out on the gear bag.

Zinc  is good and I swear by Airborne. I mix it with OJ and water. I also read a study that says Vit C can help boost immunity in endurance athletes but not necessarily the general population. Also, lysine is good for repairing tissue, along with the C.

I think I remember reading on the Coldeez label you are not suppose to mix zinc with any acidity drink like OJ.

x2 -- I can't remember the source but I always strive not to take Zinc and C too close together. I do take them both when feeling punk, but I space them out by a few hours to try to get the benefits of both. I started feeling a cold coming on last week and did my homeopathic/placebo remedies (Zinc, C, triple Green Vibrance in my smoothies) and seem to have conquered. But I am being super aware of any oddities in my body right now so I can try to fend them off.

SLEEP, everyone!!! That is probably the nicest thing we can do for ourselves right now!!!

Back in the early days of this thread, there was lots of talk about weight loss goals... did anyone set a big goal and achieve it getting ready for this? I'm racing as a neither a Clyde nor a teeny at 6'2 160 - I got called "gaunt" yesterday by someone I don't see too often, so I took that as a good sign that I'm at race weight.

I also just signed up for Ironman NYC next year, completely against my plan to get through CDA before deciding if I want to do another IM. Couldn't resist the temptation to do an IM right where I grew up.

I set a goal of 10-15 lbs. at the first of the year, am now down 24lbs. Didn't really want to lose this much because I don't know if I'll be able to maintain it post race, but still no where near too skinny

Thanks everyone! Took a 2 hour nap last night then slept a full 8 hours and am alternating Emergen-C and Honey w/Zinc lozanges. I'm also taking Sudafed to dry up my nose since that's part of what is causing the scratchy throat I think. Going for an easy jog later today and will see how I feel.

so this morning i set out for a 10k tempo and i set the garmin challenger to race me at 8 mins pace and he keeps gaining on me. by the end of 2 miles the dude has like close to 2 mins on me and is gaining every step and im working my buttocks off, breathing hard, high HR etc.  I am thinking this taper sucks and it must be to blame for my slowness. will i ever get my speed back etc?

then it occurs to me to switch into regular mode where i learn that I am running sub 7s and was in the positive distance instead of the negative, so i wasnt really going slower but faster. oooops, time to slow down.

the tempo ends up being at 7 mins flat pace and i learn another good pre-race lesson. i do like that challenger thing but better read the thing right on race day. it helps me keep on pace and motivated to stay at a certain pace (for me close to 8-8:30 mins per mile). i also spent a fair bit of time making my garmin and joule all perfect for the day and reviewing my packing list for the 12th time. I know.... HBDC, but I figured I'd share.

Get well everyone!  It's good timing to get sick now, I guess, rather than next week.  We don't want to hear about any Chrissie Wellington-like situations on race day!

Taper has been driving me sufficiently crazy.  So far I've:

1. Had the urge to do a 20 mile run, "just to see how it feels"

2. Reviewed all my race gear and started second-guessing all of it, from the bike wheels, to the tri top, to my running shoes

3. Started second-guessing my nutrition plan, even though I never had a problem with it in training ("am I really going to want to eat nothing but Powerbars and gels the whole day?!")

4. Completely disassembled my bike to clean it, thus needing to bring it back in to the LBS because it started shifting funny afterwards

Oy.

I did that about 2 weeks ago.  Good timing too because on a 75 mile ride one of the idlers on the derauleir locked up solid.  Had to do some emergency tinkering on the road to get home.  Good to have that happen BEFORE the race.

Thankfully the air temp is warmer than the water temp!  Although it may not be when we first get in.

I just found this thread.  Doing the race too and am very excited.  Ironically I am sick too.  It started yesterday morning and is particularly bad now.  I'm thinking some studies should be done on tapering to see if this is a real pattern.  Good luck everyone!
