Too funny.  Ironically I ran my first 20 miler that morning but my that evening there was no pain from the run. I don't recommend that as a means of recovery.

And John, I hope I at least rank a little higher than the chipmunk in the toilet.

Wow, Tracy, really scary stuff.  So glad that all of you are okay and that Doug was able to get to the shoulder.

Congrats on the super long, hilly, crazy bike and for getting that first 20 miler done!

Suzy asked me to post a link to the handpump I bought:

http://www.rei.com/product/779850/lezyne-pressure-drive-mini-pump

I got the size small, it is only 90g.  34.00 at my LBS.

I am pretty sure there are less expensive ones, but I really liked this one and I was able to inflate my new tube/tire to 100 psi easily with less than 20 pumps.  It is very lightweight and it can mount to the back of the water bottle cage on my downtube and it has a hose extender that screws onto the presta valve so there is no chance of bending that little metal prongy thing that can kind of get messed up (and no air escapes)  I feel more comfortable with that as opposed to the C02 cartridges which I somehow seem have more difficulty with.

I read this article that said lots of women are intimidated when it comes to simple bike maintenance and tasks like changing flat tires, tubes, cleaning chainring, etc and I hate to admit it but I am one of those women!  (I know Kyla is super UN-intimidated and a rockstar at this stuff)...

I do not have a male counterpart to take care of this stuff, or friends that I ride with who can bail me out, so....I am really glad this (flat) happened and I would like all of my MG girlfriends to know that it is not that hard...and don't be afraid to buy the stuff that makes it easier, it is an investment that can save our bacon!  And 30 minutes of walking up a steep hill in bike shoes (which can mess up your cleats!)...arrrgggghhh.

Of course, I hope I do not flat again, but if i do, I am ready!!!!  (or at least ready and willing).

Happy Thursday, MG!

WRONG!!!!! I loathe anything bike maintenance!! In fact, I just got back from the LBS to have them swap out Ryan's fancy race wheels with my sad stocked wheels... No cassette changes required but some derailleur tweaking for smooth shifting, plus brake adjustments. In spite of the fact that Ryan left me a bike stand and a how-to book to adjust things, I'd rather drive and have someone else do it!!! Fortunately it was cost-less, as I also swapped out my (un-used, yeah!!) long-stemmed tubes I purchased for the race with some regular-stem-length tubes and with the price difference the LBS just called it a wash. It's all good. I have changed many flats, but never by choice, only by necessity. And I've learned to clean my chain but my cassettes are nasty filthy and I'm never sure what to do (the whole wash/lube thing confuses me, so I cope by letting things get dirty).

Congrats on the hand pump! Here is the one I carry in my saddle bag (in addition to CO2, which I've only been successful with once). I don't think I could use the pump to inflate to 110psi-ish, but it's been good enough to get me to a LBS or home to a real pump.

Good luck racers!!! Anxious to track everyone while I sip my coffee!

And Tracy, that is way too scary but I'm so thankful everyone is OK!! Sounds like you are rockin' the IM training. 20 miles -- wow!!! Keep it up, girl!

Serious Input Question:

I have been approached by the GM of the Gym that I have been a member of for several years to see if I was at all interested in becoming a Spin Class Instructor.  Anybody been through any of this training before?  (Rob??)  They would require me to get a Group Fitness License within the first year (online testing) along with getting my Spin Instructor license at the next workshop (1 night a week for 8 weeks).

They would reimburse me for the class/test fees, if I passed.  Free Gym membership ($60 / mo) as long as I am working and some pay for the classes.

Seems like a lot of class work up front, trying to figure out if it is worth it in long run?  He would like me to pick up a couple of classes a week in the early AM with a Tri emphasis?  This whole conversation kind of took me by surprise as he just asked if I had a few minutes as I was walking out of the gym, so I didn't have a lot of questions because I hadn't wrapped my head around the whole idea at that time.  Class prep and musicality scare me more than any other part of this offer?

What says you MG?

Hey Dino. I may be a little prejudice but I would say definitely worth the time and effort. Of course that type of thing is my business now. If you are at all interested in teaching or instructing or the reduced club fees, this would be an excellent opportunity to get into it. I paid for all my own training and to have had someone reimburse me would have been great. Although now I am getting paid for what I do. I ran my first individual boot camp today and it went great. Only 3 people but then they just got a little more individual attention.

Check out this photo of George Hincapie's leg.

If this is what cycling does to your legs, not sure I want to keep doing it!!

That was much nastier than I expected it to be.  What was it (besides a leg I mean)?

Ok I have a question.  I have a Tri on Saturday (only my second one).  So I go to the lake for a swim and take off my shirt and shoes and place them on a bench.  Start to walk across the beach to the water and the sand is so hot that it burns blisters all over the bottom of my feet.  How to I treat it so I can still run on Saturday?

Ouch, Mike!!!!  Is the skin broken or just blistered?  If not broken, moleskin is a good thing to use...they will go away in a few days if you don't let the skin rupture...no picking at the skin!   Hard since it is on the bottoms of your feet, try not to walk around much or at least avoid pressure on the blister.  Poor thing.  Aiyah.

Hey Gang!

Looks like everyone had a good holiday weekend.

I was on the trainer this morning watching the tour, and man those guys turn some serious rpm's.  I found it seriously hard to keep up with even in a much higher gear than normal.  Do any of you pay much attention to your rpm's?

Also question for the group?  What type shorts are you wearing for your long events?  I am having serious issues with my shorts pinching while in aero mostly.  I have been using my bibs, then went to oomph distance, but seems like a cheap pair of zoots with the felt pad are most comfortable, but just don't know if I can hold up with those for a long ride.   Any ideas?

desoto 400 mile bibs the whole way at IMTX.   but why not throw down a couple long rides in those zoots.. don't know until you try.  good you're thinking about this now too btw!

whats the tour?  is that part of the women's world cup or something?

John,

did you have the desoto bibs on under the wetsuit or change into them at T1?  The "whole way" means you ran in them too?

imtx wasn't wetsuit legal.  yes, i ran in them... i put the bibs and tri top on prior to the start and took them off when the race was done.  the only thing i changed was my shoes. i smile when i see people post nonsense that you can't run in them.  they are so freaking comfortable.  i wear straight 400 shorts (ie no bib) for shorter distances. give em' a shot, they might work for you.

Thanks John.  I have the bibless 400 shorts and have worn them a few times.   I'll try a short run in them next time I go longer on the bike and see how they feel.   I'm looking ahead to my HIM in Sept and was wondering what would be best.

Hey all.....I'm pulling a "Trevor" - no RR from weekend.

In a nutshell, had a good swim, good bike, and 1st 5k of run. I noticed on the bike that my stomach started tightening, but didn't think too much of it. Once I hit about 5k, i couldn't really pull in calories. As i slowed down my speed, I had figured my HR would drop. But it didn't. I think that I didnt mix my Infinit with enough water and it was too strong....Or at least i think. So I ended up 12 minutes slower than last year, in very similar conditions. It sucks because that was my tune-up race before the big one, and I was going to use it as a practice session.

Been busy. Let someone go at work. Looking at another job possibility. Oh and training. Glad my IMC partner is still with me here.

I'm stating to feel what John was telling me a few months ago. 7 weeks out from the race, and it feels like I have 4000 balls in the air. Lots of juggling.

We actually hit the mid 80's here today. First real long run in 'heat.' I went for a 2 hr run after work. With my 4 bottle fuel belt. I weighed myself when i got home and had lost 6lbs!! I didn't feel dehydrated or anything like that. That blew me away.

Mossman Sprint Tri on Sunday, I have been MIA from the board and I tried catching up but just quit. I did read the previous 3 pages though. I took all of last week off from training as I just felt drained. I dont know how people train for an ironman as there 1st triathlon because training for an olympic takes a mental toll on me

Good luck, Sam did the half there and I did the Oly a few years ago.  Cold water, hilly bike and run but it was a nice race.

he's racing mossman in connecticut.  not mooseman in new hampshire.

calf pasture is flat grape!  at least from what i remember of it.

Yea Sam you had me confused for a lil bit there Smile. Thanks for the heads up John, hopefully I can make up ground on the bike and run.

Tune up for the big one is right.... Doesn't matter how you did vs. last year.  Different types of training this year going for the "longer/slower" workouts vs. some more higher intensity stuff.  Things didn't go your way, but you learned from your "mistakes."  This was race was probably more valuable than you think.  I wouldn't be concerned!!!

sorry i haven't participated that much this season.  I've been reading-up but only provided input when i think i know something.  Everyone seems to know a lot more than me..

BTW Tracey glad you guys are ok.  that sounded like such a terrifying experience.

I've been traveling a ton for both work and pleasure.  Just got back from Williamsburg VA, great place for families and so close to VA beach.  Rehabbing my rt foot and learning that the most difficult part of it is re-learning how to pace myself.  My body's reaction is to run, bike or swim at my old speeds and for now my body can't handle it.  I was going to defer my NYC triathlon registration till next yr but just learned you have to pay for it again, so i'm definitely going to race.  I'll just be slow..  Though now I might have to be in Asia again during the race.  But hopefully I can work it out. Also interesting note on the race, the swim is going to be like a time trial start, anyone race in a tri with this type of start?

Market sucks, the wife was laid off a few months ago but working as a consultant for the old co.  Good thing is she found a new job, bad thing is it's several levels down in seniority and pay.  And the worst part is her hrs are going to suck, she has to be in the office by 7:30am and work past 8pm.   Not good when  you consider she's never going to see the kid.  Not sure what we're going to do when I travel. anyone know a good nighttime babysitter in nyc?

Seems like a lot of class work up front, trying to figure out if it is worth it in long run?  He would like me to pick up a couple of classes a week in the early AM with a Tri emphasis?  This whole conversation kind of took me by surprise as he just asked if I had a few minutes as I was walking out of the gym, so I didn't have a lot of questions because I hadn't wrapped my head around the whole idea at that time.  Class prep and musicality scare me more than any other part of this offer?

What says you MG?

Dino,  it is great that they are willing to pay for your certifications but I would have lots of questions about your contract with the gym and the concerns you mentioned.  I've heard some gyms require crazy class commitments from their instructors, don't pay very well, don't provide music, etc; while others are the complete opposite.  I'd ask about flexibility with working at multiple gyms, is there assistance with music etc, (my spin instructor plays Ironman and pro bike races during class which is great - it would be nice to know if they would pay for that etc) and what are their expectations on your time.  However this is a very nice complement and congratulations.
