Veteran 2441 Western Australia | Subject: RE: Mad Manatees Mentor Group - VERY CLOSED!!! Sorry! Richardsdrr - 2012-12-28 1:48 AM Tried an hour and half on the turbo yesterday, managed about 40 min before I had to get off. I've had a slitting migraine since Christmas night. I thought my head was about to explode when I was on the turbo, so much so that I was physically sick. I have spent most of my time sleeping since, but still have the headache. Taking paracetamol but to no avail. I was supposed to go on an hour run today, but don't think I can manage it. I have to take the dog out shortly, perhaps I will get into my running gear just in case I feel like plodding. My wife and I are going away for a couple of days tomorrow to go to an old army friends wedding. So I made sure I booked into a hotel with a nice pool set up. So I should get some wet time over the next couple of days. Ok I know I am a bit behind, lets blame it on the time difference. Richard a great trick, prescribed by a doctor, for Migraines is a can of Coke and 2 asprin. I must addmit that when I heard it I thought it was the biggest load of BS but it actually works (something about the chemicals in the Coke combining with the asprin). Even better is if you are able to combine it with an ice back to the back of the neck and find the spot where your top and bottom jaws join and press hard turning in little circles. This last bit will hurt like a b!tch and may even make you cry but it helps a lot. Combining all of these things together i can generally get rid of my migraines in about 20-30 minutes, someimes quicker if I catch them early. If I dont do them they can last for days. No training for me today designated rest day which I'm feeling a bit antsy about but I understand that I need to do them otherwise I get too worn out later. Muskrat how d you do the rest day thing with your 30 runs in 30 days, that has turned into over 100 days for some people on that thread? |

Home shows. Spinervals. |

Sorry! cdban66 - 2012-12-27 8:34 AM StaceyK - 2012-12-27 8:17 AM I guess both my goal and concern relate mainly to the swim. I can swim well in the pool, no issues apart from a lack of speed but when I swim in OW I have an inability to put my face in the water. So my thoughts for the race are that I can use it to work on that but my concerns are that the race is in a fresh water (man made) lake and I have been told that the water is really manky and I am also thinking that it might make my face in the water problem worse rather than better. OK, so now we have something to work on, namely the face in the water issue. Can you get to the race site, primarily in the water, between now and then? It looks like you know what you need to work on and what you need to learn. IMO, you should get some OWS time in the next few weeks and work on the face in the water part. It is a bit different from the pool, but it is where most races occur, so if you can familiarize yourself, you'll be better off. That's my 2 cents, but I'll let the swimmers in the group give you real advice And take a look at the bike and run courses too. It makes a difference if you know the lay of the land. |

It would be super helpful it you would log your training for a few reasons. Reason #1 is probably encouragement. Also, if you have questions, other Manatees may want to check your logs to help answer it. |

I detest having someone pounding along beside me...hearing their feet and breathing...and NOT GOING ANYWHERE! On top of it, I can't seem to find a comfortable pace and pushing buttons to adjust speed just irritates me. So I've fallen back on the elliptical where at least my body doesn't expect forward progress and there's no "running" sound. Whew! There, I've said it. Now I need to do something about it. |

Muskrat how d you do the rest day thing with your 30 runs in 30 days, that has turned into over 100 days for some people on that thread? Run often, mostly easy, sometimes hard. Best advice I was ever given. One of the runners in that thread is on day 380 or something like that. He runs 35 miles sometimes...20 miles ..but lots of 5-10 miles in a week. Insane amounts, but the biggest thing is that on a "rest" day, you run slower than normal. It was recommend to go 1-2 minutes slower than your normal pace. I have trouble slowing down that much, so I would run about :30 slower than normal. You also only run the minimum miles on a "rest" day. I was truly shocked at how much I improved doing that challenge. Another big key is to not bump up your mileage at the start. If you are currently at 21 miles per week - you would run 3,2,3,3,3,5,2 for a total of 21. You can then build off of that. Currently I am running 5 days per week, but I will sometimes add a 6th, and believe it or not, my day off is not after my LSD (which is up to 12 or 13 miles)... I usually run my 5 mile route the day after my LSD, but run it about :30 to 1:00 min slower than my LSD pace. I find it amazing that I can recover by running. |

It has been interesting for me to see that running slow really does help you run faster. It is counter intuitive, but true. This is the first winter that I have been running consistently and it shows. Maybe not with Salty speeds, but I feel fresher and my times are starting to drop. Today is a good example. I went out to do a slow run and was able to negative split and surprise myself at the end. Running is simple in it's nature, yet improvement takes a lot of dedication, analysis and time. |

Thanks for those motivational videos, you can never have to many of those on trainer. For my part I do Trainer Road and watch Dr. Who on Netflix streaming. I set it up so that I can only watch a Dr. Who episode while I am biking, therefore I need to keep biking Only on the first season but it's good motivation to get back on it.
I signed up for a Jan 1st 10k to keep my drinking in check and a Half Marathon the day before St. Patties day. It is my first 10k race but I'm sure it will be cold and fun. Yanti, I saw this when I was in Lovina and some guy told us that drugs in Indonesia was bad juju. As in like death penalty, is that true? As in, yes. It's very sad. The government is (very slowly) moving toward rehab for possession but there are very few facilities and Indonesia is truly in the dark ages regarding so-called "mental" health issues, and definitely regarding addiction. And recreational use. And the difference between the two. And the difference between, say, Prozac, heroin, and pot. Death penalty stands for drug traffickers (that means anybody with more than say a few joints or grams worth). I help run a prison group for those convicted of drug offenses and it can be heartbreaking. My nephew (who's like my younger brother) spent two years in prison for drugs. The conditions are mindblowingly abominable. |

I lost nearly two years of my life to a nearly-continuous migraine. It's straight-up suffering. A lot of the over-the-counter migraine formulations in the U.S. combine aspirin, paracetamol and caffeine. It seems to work much better than any of the three or two alone, and it's been fairly extensively studied. I figure the sugar in Coke also helps if you haven't been able to keep anything down, and for me Coke often soothes nausea. You don't get these often do you? |
